Of previous books in series:
“…A veritable smorgasbord for fans of Austen, as artists, poets, and writers come together to explore why, at 250, Jane is still inspiring, enthralling and infuriating us.”
– Helena Kelly, author The Worlds of Jane Austen
“Encounters with Jane Austen is a delightful compendium of reactions—or perhaps we should call them love notes–from many creative writers and other thoughtful interpreters who share their appreciation for Austen. Reading Encounters is like discussing Austen with your best friends if your friends group were to include the likes of Julia Quinn and Natalie Jenner among many other talented authors. Insightful, yet “light and bright and sparkling,” this book offers a wonderful way to celebrate the many facets of Austen’s genius and to enjoy an excellent introduction to her life and impact prepared by scholar Jennie Batchelor.” – Mary Mintz, Associate Librarian Emerita, American University
“For us, in the twenty-first century, there’s so much to entertain in this carefully curated collection. It contains poetry, short stories, essays, and interviews with creators and thinkers – and indeed, with Jane herself! Savour in sections, or gobble it up in one sitting as we celebrate 250 years of Austen’s life, her writing, and her enduring legacy.” – Dr Gillian Dow, Uses of Austen: Jane’s Afterlives
“Fizzing with originality and creative energy, each contributor reveals their own deeply personal encounter with Austen’s work, finding new relevance and importance in the great novelist en route.” – Hannah Grieg, historian, author and film consultant.
“… the words of this remarkable collection are breath blown back to our beloved ancestor James Baldwin, and he to them, to us: air we breathe, air we need, for these troubled times.”
— Kevin Powell – GRAMMY-nominated poet and activist
“From reflective pieces, interviews, essays, and poetic interventions, Encounters with James Baldwin confirms the enduring resonance of the life and work of James Baldwin across the globe. This is an important text for readers eager to consider the expansive legacy of arguably the most piercing and committed author and critic of the last century.”
— Rich Blint, writer and critic
“What a joy this book is, a fabulous collection of poems, interviews, think pieces and cultural commentary, all marking and celebrating the life and work of James Baldwin. One to dip in and out of, rather than read all the way through, you need time to fully absorb what each writer has to say and process the new perspectives on Baldwin. Wonderful. ” ****

This is a fascinating insight into a woman we all think we know and yet I am unsure anyone truly knew her. This was a woman who carved out a career on her terms and was sadly taken far too soon however you believe she died. She is a woman far more than her image and this book has a fascinating mix of stories and images and reflections for anyone with an interest in all things Marilyn. The fact we are still so interested all these years later shows the effect her short time in the spot light had on the world.
100 years after her birth, Marilyn Monroe remains one of the most recognisable celebrities ever, but what is the reason for Marilyn's eternal appeal? Here are the personal & academic reflections of a group made up of academics, fans, & even actors who have played Marilyn onstage.
I enjoyed reading this selection of views on topics ranging from Marilyn's influence on fashion, to her love of reading, & her career. There are some intriguing views on Marilyn & her continuing influence on popular culture & the photographs chosen included some I have not seen before. The two or three poems were the least enjoyable aspects for me but that's because I'm not a big fan of poetry in general. To be honest, my only real criticism is that out of all the fantastic photographs of Marilyn, I'm not keen on the one that was used for the cover. 4.5 stars (rounded down)
