What does a family look like?
In the wide, wild world, families come in many forms. Some are big, some are small. Some are blended, adoptive, foster, multigenerational, interracial, LGBTQ+, or led by a single parent. Every family has its own story, traditions, and experiences, but all are connected by love, care, and belonging.
The story begins by exploring the many different types of families children may encounter in the world around them. It then transitions into a series of imaginative and intentionally unique animal family combinations, designed to reinforce the idea that there is no single way a family should look. Through these playful examples, young readers are encouraged to celebrate differences and recognize that families are defined not by appearance, but by the love, support, and connection they share.
Written in warm, rhyming verse and paired with vibrant illustrations, In the Wide, Wild World is a gentle read-aloud that promotes acceptance, empathy, inclusion, and belonging.
In the wide, wild world, if you look around,
families of every kind can be found.
Big ones and small ones, all colors too—
each one is special, with love shining through.

Book Review: In the Wide, Wild World: A Celebration of All Types of Families, Love, and Belonging by Natalie Horseman, Daniella Kaye (Illustrator)
Five stars from me! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - The Sassy Bookworm
I just finished reading In the Wide, Wild World by Natalie Horseman, and I absolutely loved it! This charming picture book is a heartfelt celebration of families in all their beautiful forms. From the very first page, it’s clear that this is a story about love, belonging, and the many ways families come together.
The book takes you on a gentle journey through the lives of various animal families: a baby giraffe raised by zebra parents, lion cubs with two moms, penguin dads caring for their chick, and a kitten finding her forever home. Each vignette highlights different family dynamics such as adoptive, foster, blended, same-sex parents, and grandparents raising grandchildren. What really struck me is how this book conveys such complex ideas about family diversity in a way that’s simple, warm, and easy for young children to grasp.
Written in soothing rhyming verse, it feels like the perfect bedtime story or read-aloud for classrooms. The illustrations by Daniella Kaye are vibrant and endearing, making the book visually delightful. Honestly, the cover alone is so inviting and adorable that it would make an excellent addition to any child's bookshelf.
What I loved most is how this book underscores the core message that family is defined by love and connection — no matter what form it takes. It’s a wonderful tool for teaching kids about acceptance, inclusion, and social-emotional understanding.
Whether you’re part of an adoptive family, have LGBTQ+ parents, belong to a blended household, or just want to nurture empathy and kindness in children, this book is a gem. I highly recommend In the Wide, Wild World as a meaningful and uplifting read for kids ages 2 to 8. It’s a beautiful reminder that everyone belongs and everyone is loved.
