'Suffer In Silence' is the thirteenth novel in Masterton's popular dark and gritty fictional crime series, set in Cork and starring out Katie Maguire as Detective Superintendent. Despite her role, Katie is very much a hands on garda and this is seen throughout the novel as she personally attends various crime scenes and interviews witnesses.
Now, there are many police procedural novels, what separates the work of Masterton from others? Well, the Katie Maguire series certainly walks on the gorier side of the police procedural with both very chilling crimes and levels of violence that are disturbing. That's not a negative, the series is ideal for those who enjoy their crime with a healthy side of horror. And Masterson writes factually, not drawing out the gore but simply describing the scene and moving on. The addition of a 'gangland' crime family, makes this particular novel seem contemporary.
I enjoyed the pacing of this story and also the setting as I was able to visualise many of the locations. Also, the mix of Irish within conversations in commonplace in many communities and I loved to see the Irish language peppered throughout the stories.
As I've mentioned, this is the 13th novel in the series and while 'Suffer in Silence' would work well as a stand alone, there are numerous references to both both events and characters, so it could potentially spoil the enjoyment of those storylines if you While this is a long running series, you can read the novels asCork and a standalone, but this will spoil the events of the previous novels if you don't take the time to enjoy the whole series.
so I fully recommend that you find some time, make up some coffee and dive into the increasingly dark world of Maguire's Cork.

I'm a huge fan of the Katie Maguire series and have read them all.
I love a police procedural series, but the main thing that sets this one apart from the norm is the depravity and the gore. I'm not negatively saying this, it goes with the territory with the author, but this is not a read for the faint hearted.
There are three main plots in the book, two of which Kate and her team are investigating and the third is connected to Kate’s partner. In all three we witness the depths to which human behaviour can fall.
The horrific results of the crimes are matched only by the devastation that's visited on Kate and as we leave her, her whole life is turned upside down.
If you like this genre then this is a brilliant engrossing read.
