'Suffer In Silence' is the thirteenth novel in Masterton's popular dark and gritty fictional crime series, set in Cork and starring out Katie Maguire as Detective Superintendent. Despite her role, Katie is very much a hands on garda and this is seen throughout the novel as she personally attends various crime scenes and interviews witnesses.
Now, there are many police procedural novels, what separates the work of Masterton from others? Well, the Katie Maguire series certainly walks on the gorier side of the police procedural with both very chilling crimes and levels of violence that are disturbing. That's not a negative, the series is ideal for those who enjoy their crime with a healthy side of horror. And Masterson writes factually, not drawing out the gore but simply describing the scene and moving on. The addition of a 'gangland' crime family, makes this particular novel seem contemporary.
I enjoyed the pacing of this story and also the setting as I was able to visualise many of the locations. Also, the mix of Irish within conversations in commonplace in many communities and I loved to see the Irish language peppered throughout the stories.
As I've mentioned, this is the 13th novel in the series and while 'Suffer in Silence' would work well as a stand alone, there are numerous references to both both events and characters, so it could potentially spoil the enjoyment of those storylines if you While this is a long running series, you can read the novels asCork and a standalone, but this will spoil the events of the previous novels if you don't take the time to enjoy the whole series.
so I fully recommend that you find some time, make up some coffee and dive into the increasingly dark world of Maguire's Cork.

I'm a huge fan of the Katie Maguire series and have read them all.
I love a police procedural series, but the main thing that sets this one apart from the norm is the depravity and the gore. I'm not negatively saying this, it goes with the territory with the author, but this is not a read for the faint hearted.
There are three main plots in the book, two of which Kate and her team are investigating and the third is connected to Kate’s partner. In all three we witness the depths to which human behaviour can fall.
The horrific results of the crimes are matched only by the devastation that's visited on Kate and as we leave her, her whole life is turned upside down.
If you like this genre then this is a brilliant engrossing read.

Another well written read, set in Cork and featuring Katie Maguire, the best in the series so far. It's chilling, dark and filled with suspense and interesting characters. An unsettling read, due to the subject matter, but it is well thought out and very compulsive. I loved the ending and can't wait to find out what is next for Katie. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

If you love police procedurals with heart, grit, and unflinching courage, this is an outstanding, engrossing addition to the series. Highly recommended — though do go in knowing it pulls no punches. I’m already waiting to see what comes next.

Ouch, compulsive reading where the writer does not spare you from shocks and horrors galore. I basically reel with every punch thinking surely that’s the last one but despite knowing this I come back for more. No subject is barred either, mistreatment of animals is particularly shocking in this instance plus the elderly In a care home, vulnerabilities are definitely preyed on which makes the terror even more real. The main threads of the story are all so compelling that I raced through from beginning to end, with maybe a few breaks to regroup at the most shocking or upsetting parts. I have really felt I’ve built up a rapport with the main character over the book series but I don’t know how much she or I can take….. As ever I love the Irish backdrop with its rich characters, names and language, this softens some of the rawness as I immerse myself in the culture but yes, still left fairly shellshocked and (stupidly) looking forward to more. Recommend but also understand if it’s a bit much and not your thing!

A new Katie Maguire tale is always one to look forward to and this one doesn’t disappoint. A range of investigations from death at a care home outing to murder connected to a department store plus horrendous animal cruelty the pace is relentless. Throw in a gangster trial in Dublin where the Judge is Katie’s lover and oh a kidnapping as well as more murders and you have a great read. Full of dark humour and the usual great characters this is recommended!
