Description

Two girls forced to share a body as they hunt and destroy beasts. The irony? They're the very beast they must destroy. The first in an incredibly written and dazzlingly original YA fantasy duology, perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo and Tomi Adeyemi.

Lia and Ali are trained to use their elemental weaving powers to destroy burl beasts - mindless, bloodthirsty monsters created when the threads of their world tangle together. Their secret? They themselves are a burl beast: twin sisters, forced to share one body. Quiet and reserved Lia controlling by day. Outspoken and abrasive Ali leading by night.

When news arrives that an elusive criminal is creating bespoke burl beasts by practising the illegal magic that could finally separate them, the girls jump at the chance to join the team sent to investigate. But as the girls get closer to their new flock and, more importantly, two different boys, it becomes harder to hide who - or what - they really are.

Delving deeper into the dangerous world of flesh-weaving and political intrigue, the girls get closer to the answers they so desperately seek. But is the price of their separation truly worth the risk?

Two girls forced to share a body as they hunt and destroy beasts. The irony? They're the very beast they must destroy. The first in an incredibly written and dazzlingly original YA fantasy duology...

This book will resound with fantasy fans, who like strong female characters, and enjoy a magic system inspired and based around threads, weaving, and sewing. I am the target audience. I got to the end and I wanted more, so much more.

I loved seeing all the references to sewing, and fabrics. The location names made me squeal in happiness, they are all based around sewing, and they just make so much sense. These, not-so-tiny-details felt like the book was so different, but yet so familiar. I found it easy to picture, to understand what the characters where doing, and just go along with it. I got lost into this magnificent world of loose threads, magic, humanity and not so much humanity.

The first part of the book feels so intentional in setting the world with its magic system and the lore that naturally flows from it. The second part is drawing from the solid bases created and goes to town with it. It is relentless in the story telling, absolutely magnificent with completely unexpected plot twists.

A nice subtle critique to religious fanaticism and the sort of escapism you seek becasue of it. A thought provoking novel about what is considered acceptable by society and what is viewed as repulsive just because it is not understood or different, what we accept behind closed doors as long as we don't speak about it.
