Description
“Stories don’t offer maps. They offer companionship.”
Some losses happen in an instant. Others unfold so quietly that we don’t realize our lives have changed until we’re standing in a world we no longer recognize.
Held in the Vanishing is a memoir about learning to attend to life differently when the people we love begin to disappear.
Drawn from years of caring for both of her parents as they navigated different forms of dementia - Alzheimer's and Primary Progressive Aphasia, Ti Mougne invites readers into the quiet terrain of anticipatory grief, changing identity, and enduring love. Told through intimate vignettes, the memoir is less concerned with answers than with what becomes possible when we stay present to life's unfolding.
This is not a story of redemption or tidy acceptance. It lingers with disappearance, identity, and love—not to resolve them, but to discover what remains when certainty gives way to presence.
For anyone who has loved through uncertainty, grieved a life that changed slowly, or searched for meaning in the ordinary moments that hold us together, Held in the Vanishing offers companionship, witness, and the quiet assurance that we do not walk these roads alone.
A Note From the Publisher
Held in the Vanishing is her first memoir. Inspired by her experience caring for both her parents through different forms of dementia, it reflects her belief that some change cannot be managed—it can only be accompanied.
Ti lives in Colorado with her husband and son, where she continues to write, make photographs, and explore the practice of poetic attunement.
Advance Praise
"Held in the Vanishing is a unique, insightful, and eye-opening memoir told in brief vignettes that shows what it's truly like to be a caregiver for two loved ones with different types of dementia. Ti Mougne effectively captures the emotional toll, chaos, and cruelty of dementia caregiving and shows how, as a caregiver, you may be forced to make decisions that will haunt you. This is a real, raw story of identity, guilt, grief, letting go, enduring love in the face of decline, and what gets rewritten in the quiet." - Readers' Favorite
