King James I succeeds Queen Elizabeth for the English Crown, promising religious tolerance and bringing an end to decades of Catholic oppression and savage bloodshed.

An unforgivable betrayal.

The new monarch’s assurances amount to nothing. In his first parliamentary session, he upholds all of Elizabeth’s existing laws, laying waste to his pledges of peace and tolerance.

A scheme born of desperation.

Robert Catesby, a conspirator in the failed Essex rebellion of 1601, reaches breaking point. If mercy will not come from the Crown, he will take justice into his own hands. He hatches a plot that will shake the nation to its core and re-establish the one true faith at God’s command.

A plot to strike at Parliament’s opening.

A plot to send the King and his heirs to Hell.

An exile turned regicide.

Guy Fawkes, a battle-hardened soldier fighting alongside the Catholic Spanish in the Low Countries, is summoned to the troubled shores of his homeland. His military expertise and devotion to the Catholic cause are exactly what Catesby seeks.

But as the conspirators prepare to strike, Robert Cecil, the hunchbacked Secretary of State, closes in, relentless as a hound on the scent, hungry for blood.
