Description

Art world darling Julian Le Sang paints with passion, with abandon, and with his own blood. Inside these blood paintings, Julian sees more than art... he sees the future.

"Propulsive and mesmerizingly original... This one is going to be felt far and wide." —K.C. Jones, author of White Line Fever

From Tyler Jones, author of Burn the Plans (one of Esquire's Best Horror Books of 2022), Heavy Oceans, and Midas, comes a new novel in which the future is written in blood.

In fifth grade, Julian is bullied and alienated until Marcy befriends him and learns the strange boy's dark secret: he sees visions of death in his own blood. Visions that turn out to be eerily accurate.

When Julian becomes a famous artist, he inadvertently pulls Marcy and her son into a world of secret government programs, murder, blood soaked canvas, and a terrifying version of the future that's barreling toward them with all the force of a nuclear weapon. A complex and deeply emotionally supernatural thriller about fate and how every choice shapes what will become our world.

Wow. This one hit hard.

It was not only beautifully written, but raw and terrifying on multiple levels. The story so much deeper and hard hitting then I had expected.

It cut through me so much. And I think the biggest reason is that I've always had a saying: it will be okay and if it can't then at least everything has an ending. And this book builds on that with the ending always being near.

The heavy subjects it discusses are all done in such a way that you feel every little bit of it even if you haven't personally experienced them. I cried with this book and its characters. A lot.

It is mostly a thriller, but definitely had some horror elements. They were both so visceral and deeply psychological. I loved the parts of gore, but I mostly loved that it had so many layers from the main story rooted in those moments. It wasn't just vivid descriptions of something horrific, it was deep layers of story coming to a climax throughout the book.

Alex's storyline was so raw and so gutwrenching. Being confronted with time and the inevitable was surreal at times. Because even when you know what is coming, you still hope differently or for more time.

I think this is a book that will haunt my thoughts for a very long time. And I love it for that.

It will be bought the second it comes out and it will be reread as it is definitely a six star read. I will keep a close eye on Tyler Jones and check out his previous books.

It is a book I definitely recommend to people looking for something that takes your heart on a gut wrenching thrilling journey with paranormal elements.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Shortwave publishing for letting me read this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

DEPTH CHARGE by TYLER JONES

Thank you to Shortwave Publishing and Netgalley for the Advance Reader Copy

Let me prefix this review by saying I have read everything Tyler Jones has ever published. He is my favourite author. The ease of which I can read his prose, at speed, and the way it paints an image but lets my imagination fill in the rest, amazes me.

I started writing this review at 94% because I genuinely did not want the story to end. It will also mean I have no new Tyler Jones left to read, a thought that causes further anguish to the book hangover I am already going to suffer.

Full Fathom Five, Tyler's short story upon which this novel is based, found at the end of his Burn the Plans collection, may be my favourite story ever. So, I had a mild (completely unjustified as everything he has written is excellent) trepidation to start Depth Charge.

THIS BOOK IS INCREDIBLE. It is probably his best yet. It expands and amplifies everything that made the original short story great. A thrilling meditation on life, death, loss, grief, acceptance, responsibility and fate/destiny.
A story of Depth charge, after Depth charge, after Depth charge. By the end I was a raw exposed nerve. I'm not sure I will be the same again.

"We all carry a little piece of armageddon inside us"
