Description

A desire machine gives people what they ask for.
Then it starts showing them what they meant.

Thea takes the job because Calibros Beta has outlasted everyone who came before her — and because she is certain enough not to ask why they left.

Long Calibration is the second novella in The Uncanny Hours, a collection about systems that work exactly as designed, and what that costs the people inside them. Here, the system is a neuroscience platform that listens closer than anyone ever has — and answers a question no one meant to ask out loud.

This is a story about complicity: the small, reasonable choices that add up to something you can no longer call an accident. About certainty as a kind of armor. About what it means to build the thing that changes you, one calibration at a time.

Uncorrected advance reading copy.

A Note From the Publisher

Long Calibration is Book 2 in The Uncanny Hours, a collection of standalone literary fiction novellas connected by theme rather than plot. No prior book is required — this story stands complete on its own.

Book 1, The Silence She Hummed, is planned for a separate NetGalley listing later this year.

What happens when you no longer want what you thought you did but you're stuck with it anyway? At what point does the greater good no longer justify individual harm? How do you convince those in power to pause a project that’s nearing delivery to fix something they don’t see as an issue? This was a quick read but it brought up so many questions and after finishing I had to sit with it for a minute. So many of us have had situations where we’ve felt pressured to move work forward that maybe wasn’t ready or had serious issues and this book takes that to the next level. I really enjoyed this and am interested in reading more from this author.
