Description
Bloomsbury presents I Had to Do It by Charlie Gallagher, read by Nathalie Buscombe
It only takes a day for your whole life to unravel...
When Jessica Walsh meets a stranger in a café one morning, she thinks she’s found a kindred spirit.
Both women have a sister who’s an addict as well as a father growing desperate to help. There’s one crucial difference, though: Jess knows her dad would never resort to violence to fix the ‘problem’, as this woman’s father has.
Later, when Jess receives panicked voicemails from her sister, she rushes home to find Vicky missing.
Her father insists it’s all part of a plan to get Vicky clean – but Jess can’t forget that woman from the café, the strange coincidence of their meeting.
It had comforted her earlier. Now it feels like a warning.
Jessica would do well to listen…

I absolutely loved this audiobook! I ended up listening to it over just two days because I was completely hooked.
Jessica Walsh’s life starts to unravel when her sister Vicky goes missing, and her father insists it’s all part of a plan to help her overcome her addiction. But after a strange encounter with a woman in a café, Jess begins to question what’s really going on.
The pace was brilliant and I really enjoyed the way the plot gradually unfolded. There was plenty of detail, some great twists and lots of moments where I thought I had things figured out, only to be proved wrong.
I really invested in the characters and found myself genuinely caring about what happened to them. The narration was excellent and really brought the story to life.
Definitely a 5-star listen for me. I was disappointed when it ended!
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook.

A very enjoyable read and a departure from the usual Charlie Gallagher niche. A catchy opening to get you reeled in and the plot develops at a steady pace. Plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader intrigued. I would certainly recommend this book to those who enjoy psychological thrillers
I am a first-time reader of Charlie Gallagher's catalogue and I am very impressed with this book. It was gripping and entertaining throughout, with fast-paced story and characters you want to learn more about. I enjoyed the twists of the story and how they developed - I changed my mind a few times about who I thought deserves to be punished and who is the real hero here. I would definitely recommend the audio book - the narration was emotional, just right for the story. I found the ending a bit abrupt but overall I enjoyed listening to the book and would be looking out for more stories from Mr Gallagher in future.
When Jess unexpectedly meets a woman whose family story uncannily mirrors hers, the last thing she expects is for this to make her question her closest relationships.
But like Jess, the woman also has a sister struggling with addiction issues. And a father who is at the end of his tether with respect to the situation. But Jess is certain that her father - unlike that of the other woman - would never resort to violence to sort out Vicky's problems. Would he?
There are layers to this story that are not done justice by the blurb, and those are the parts - which only gradually come to light - that make this book memorable. The mysterious organisation looking out for victims of the domestic abuse epidemic was particularly intriguing.
This is a gripping domestic thriller that will keep the reader's attention captured throughout. I actually enjoyed the audio book version much more than the print version because the narrator does a fantastic job of bringing characters alive.

Lucky enough to be approved to listen through ARC. I loved this book! I listened in audio, narration amazing. Binged it in 2 days. Story follows Jessica who is in therapy for family issues, her sister goes missing after being sent to some random ‘rehab’ house by her dad. Jessica wants her back safe but opening that can of worms led to spilling a whole barrel of worms. Really good twists and turns. I will read more from this author.

An interesting dramatic exploration of the damage caused by people who play out the drama triangle in their lives, particularly how the rescuer ultimately harms the victim.
The plot is slightly chaotic and all over the place so you do have to concentrate.

This is only my second read by this author and yet this was a completely different read.
This was much more a psychological thriller and I really got drawn into this one within just a few pages.
There was a lot going on here and I really liked the confusion of the first section that kept me invested in what on earth was going on and how things would play out from here.
I felt so sorry for Jess who had been put in such a difficult position. The issues with her sister and now with her daughter playing up too - it's so easy to see how she managed to spiral like she did.
As a mum, you just naturally have that instinct to protect at any cost.
As the story unfolds, we see many twists and turns which managed to complete flip the storyline on its head and then I actually ended up changing my views on the characters and yet I still felt uncomfortable about this.
This was so well written because by midway, everything has changed and instead of rethinking my theories, I was questioning everything and had no clue who to trust or not.
Despite my feelings about each of the characters, I was completely invested in this one and had to know how things would be resolved.
Seeing the pages dwindle and yet I had so many questions still unanswered, I wasn't even sure of this would work out by the end - but the pieces just all came together swiftly for the final few pages.
This really does get you thinking about what you would do to keep your family safe - how far you'd let things go and how are you are to stretch your own morals.
Another great read and I can't wait to add more soon.
