New Jersey, summer of ‘95. The internet is still a novelty, and the nation is glued to the OJ trial. Johanna is skimming bugs from her pool; inside, her sister-in-law is bathing her husband.

Johanna is feeling adrift in her own life. Two years ago, she and her husband Paul were on the brink of divorce. But when Paul was paralyzed in a workplace accident, she decided to stay and care for him. Her life is lonely. She spends her days preparing meals, dressing her husband for work, and watching TV alone.

But one evening as she’s channel surfing, Johanna discovers something unusual. There seems to be a channel she’s never seen before, playing a round-the-clock feed of a woman who looks, acts and talks like her. This woman is living a very different kind of life in New York: the life she might have led if she’d walked out on Paul when their marriage first hit the rocks.

And as Johanna’s obsession deepens, it emerges that this doppelganger has an agenda of her own. When she bursts into Johanna's quiet and carefully ordered life, the ensuing chaos forces both women to confront the lives they are leading – and the choices they have yet to make.
