Description

Some inherit a name. She had to earn hers.

Mary Adel grew up watching her father command courtrooms. When Zach Adel runs out of time, the case of his career passes into her hands: a Black woman dismissed in an emergency room, four words typed into her chart, and a hospital betting that no jury will call it what it was.

Aisha Reynolds waited while others were taken back ahead of her. By the time anyone believed her, the damage was done — and the record of that night says something different from what she remembers.

To see it through, Mary must stand up to the hospital's lawyers, to her own firm, and to the quiet machinery that decides whose pain gets believed — and learn the difference between carrying a name and earning it.

A novel about medicine, race, and what passes between a father and a daughter — and what a parent owes a grown child: protection, honesty, or preparation.

For readers of Small Great Things and Take My Hand.

A Note From the Publisher

Thank you for requesting this book.

I'm a trial attorney in New Jersey. I've spent my working life in courtrooms, and this novel came out of a question I couldn't put down: what happens when the record of an event and the truth of it are two different things, and the person who lived it has to prove which is which.

Mary Adel takes over her dying father's case and finds out what it costs to carry a name she didn't earn. It's a courtroom novel, but the heart of it is a father and a daughter.

This is an uncorrected advance copy. The book releases November 10, 2026. Goodreads accepts reviews now; Amazon will on release day. If you post, it's helpful to mention you read an advance copy.
