Description

If the truth hurts... will you keep digging?

Lorrie Parker has never been late to figure skating practice. A two-time gold medalist and Olympian, her home is on the ice. So, when the first day of practice for her senior year arrives, and she does not, her pairs partner, Sterling, and childhood best friend, MJ, are left scratching their heads—when they discover her dismembered body abandoned in a garbage bag outside the rink's entrance, they're left freefalling into a whole new horrid reality. Worse still, after messy fights and deep-cutting betrayals, they both possessed motive to kill her themselves.

Desperate for answers and to prove her own innocence, MJ embarks on an obsessive research mission that leads her to the name of a recently released serial killer known for his victim type—which bears an eerie resemblance to Lorrie. When Sterling tells her it's crazy to hunt the suspect herself, she offers him a deal: in exchange for helping her find Lorrie's killer, she will take her place as his skate partner.

As MJ and Sterling entangle themselves in their college town's dark past, they discover damning truths about the present life Lorrie led in her final days.

Whether or not their hunger for justice will protect any future victims remains unanswered.

Thank you to NetGalley for the complimentary ARC of this book.

I really enjoyed this book. I was immediately drawn into the story from the very first page. I liked that the main characters were both flawed in different ways and they were easy for me to root for. There were a lot of different characters thrown at us in the beginning which made it a little bit confusing but once I figured out who was who, the story was easy to continue.

This started out with a bang, then slowed down. It still held my interest because the plot was interesting. I did like the whodunnit aspect and the character development was excellent. Some plot twists took me by surprise. All in all, a decent thriller and I would read future books by this author.

Thanks for letting me read in advance!

I really enjoyed this. I was so invested, I needed to know who the killer was. I was a little worried at the beginning that the figure skating side of the story would bore me, but it was quite interesting. I love the random "anonymous" chapters, being inside the killer's mind was gross and interesting, also very necessary to all the twists. I did not guess who the killer was until maybe the chapter before we found out and I wasn't very sure, so it made finding it out as the characters found all that much more exciting. I loved how Sterling and MJ healed together, as unhealthy as it was at times, I loved seeing the character growth together and separately. Overall I really enjoyed this book! Thrillers with a side of romance aren’t something I'd normally pick up, but I'm so glad I did.

When I first started reading I had high expectations, but I was a bit disappointed.
I really liked the plot and the fact that it was hard to fully know who to trust. I like reading mystery/thriller books where the readers can immerse themselves in solving the crime and connecting the dots, and I think this book did that part really well.
I think it’s interesting how the two main characters had motives and I hoped the book would lean more into that, because I feel like I didn’t really feel their frustrations or motivation to try and prove their innocence. (Although, yes I know that was the reason why they were trying to solve the case, it just felt like that aspect wasn’t really there. I don’t know how to explain it).
After the first few chapters it felt like there was no real danger, and nothing much was really happening.
The main characters’ backgrounds are really interesting, specifically their relationships and dynamics with their family and friends, so I wish they had been utilised more in the story to add more conflict and tension, making it more interesting to read.
Another thing that I didn’t really like was some parts of the writing. The use of line breaks or splitting sentences was effective in creating more emphasis and suspense; however, it felt like they were overused and weren’t needed in some parts. Maybe it’s just a personal preference, because to me it didn’t feel natural.
The book was okay and I have no problems with the overall story and plot, but I think I was just expecting something more, and this was just not for me.
