Description

A young immigrant who can see the dead must find the place she most belongs—both in life and in love—as she navigates the underworld with a haunted, handsome man, in the second book of the gothic fantasy trilogy that began with Weavingshaw.

Things are looking grim for Leena Al-Sayer after she was trapped in the demon world with a dying Bram St. Silas. But Leena is nothing if not resourceful—and determined. Being a stranger in a strange land is far from a new experience for her, and she is ready to do anything it takes to save the life of the man she has grown to love.

But the deadly forces of the Wake are after her. For she and Bram now possess the red diary of the Avons—the artifact the Wake have been desperately seeking. Within its pages lies the key to the location of a powerful object: one that will let demons move freely between their realm and the human world—and will enable Leena to break Bram free of his lifetime indenture. With enemies closing in, Leena and Bram must do everything in their power to find the object before the Wake—or risk watching their entire world fall into ruin.

A young immigrant who can see the dead must find the place she most belongs—both in life and in love—as she navigates the underworld with a haunted, handsome man, in the second book of the gothic...

Weavingshaw has been my favorite read of the year, so you can imagine how thrilled I was when I found out I’d received an ARC of the sequel and would get to read it half a year early. Thank you so much to Bantam for this opportunity!

As with its predecessor, The Saint of Silence is a paranormal gothic romantasy, and while I’m admittedly getting a little tired of the rather repetitive outings in the romantasy genre, this series continues to be an absolute joy. Not only is the romance incredibly well done, with plenty of yearning and conflicted yet deeply likeable characters, but there’s also an intriguing world and a plot steeped in atmosphere and mystery.

Once again, Heba Al-Wasity doesn’t shy away from tackling topics like colonialism, racism, and the impact of war on displaced people, blending the world of Weavingshaw with our own in a way that is both painful and deeply meaningful. I really hope you paid attention in the first book and managed to piece together all the lore, events, and people, because you’ll definitely need that knowledge here.

The book picks up almost immediately where the last one ended. I think one of the hardest things for a sequel to do is to avoid simply copying the first book while also not straying so far from what has already been established that it starts to feel disconnected. The Saint of Silence balances this perfectly. It builds on everything that came before while still feeling like its own story.

It’s not as slow-paced as Weavingshaw, but this book still takes its time, carefully crafting its scenes and events. The writing is so evocative that it sometimes borders on poetry. Some scenes were so cinematic that they genuinely came to life before my eyes. And don’t be fooled by the slower pace: there are some huge revelations waiting for you.

The only downside of reading this one so early? Now I have to wait even longer for the conclusion. And honestly, I cannot wait to see how Al-Wasity brings all those lingering threads together.
