A brand-new historical mystery series by Bloody Scotland co-founder Gordon Brown, writing as Morgan Cry.

Scotland, 1662. The witch hunts are raging. Sir George Mackenzie is one of Scotland’s finest advocates. He has defended many accused witches in court. Privately, he doubts they exist at all.

A hungry lad turns up at his Dundee door. The boy's mother has been seized, accused of witchcraft by a man she humiliated in the street. She is Isobel McCann, the Candle Lady of the docks. Sir George's secret ex-lover.

The accuser's brother is Joseph Blair, the most dangerous man in Dundee. He buys magistrates, and he has beaten Sir George in court three times. If he uncovers the affair, Sir George could hang beside Isobel.

Then Blair makes him an offer he cannot refuse. To save Isobel, Sir George must make a deal with the devil. And beat him at his own game . . .

Based on the real-life seventeenth-century lawyer Sir George Mackenzie, this twisty historical mystery is perfect for fans of Andrew Taylor, G.J. Williams, Alys Clare, C.J. Sansom, S.J. Parris and fans of Outlander.
