Description

Niki Kai did everything right. School. Army. Business. Home. Marriage. Kids. Runs that start in the dark and end when everyone is already asleep. No disaster, no failure, no dramatic turning point. Only a quiet question in the middle of it all: Is this me, or is this what I learned to be? And the slow realization that he has built the right life for someone else, and that his own key was left outside.

It is the story of one man and everyone who made him: a chain of generations that passes without words, love that doesn't know how to speak, a father and a son separated by twenty years of silence. And it is about the moment a man decides that the story he has been telling himself is over. He packs up his family and leaves, not to escape, but to find out whether, far from everything he built, he can finally build the only thing that truly matters. Home.

Told in thirteen parts, in the first person and the present tense, the novel unfolds across an invented geography whose place names stand for inner states, and its characters carry symbolic names drawn from animals and nature. The voice is spare, restrained, and does not explain or console.

Niki Kai did everything right. School. Army. Business. Home. Marriage. Kids. Runs that start in the dark and end when everyone is already asleep. No disaster, no failure, no dramatic turning point...
