In May 2019, Dr. Genevieve Neugold, a young surgeon, is being honored at the Children’s Hospital of Connecticut in Hartford when a stolen ambulance explodes through the lobby wall. Alexandr Malic, a physicist from the country of Georgia, and his armed team take the hospital hostage. They strap bomb vests onto sick children and seize the intensive care unit. Their real target is the radioactive Cesium 137 inside the hospital’s blood lab.

Malic is no ordinary terrorist. A year earlier, the crime boss Georges Talov abducted his daughter, Natalie. Malic will get her back only if he turns the Cesium into a dirty bomb over Manhattan, a plot Talov’s Russian backers have bet heavily on.

Former Navy SEAL Jake Bolton, who came to surprise Genevieve, survives the first attack. With veteran security guard Dan “Blizzard” Quinn, he works through elevator shafts, stairwells and operating rooms, improvising weapons from medical equipment. Outside, the disgraced Governor Don Bello chases headlines while the FBI, Homeland Security and Police Chief Julie Rivera clash over a breach, a ransom and the secrets they kept from one another. Inside, Genevieve becomes Malic’s hostage and bargains with him for her patients’ lives.
