Description
Author of Survivor Injustice and Coercion, Kylie Cheung's Genesis is a speculative, autofiction novel in which the author's abortion opens a wormhole of infinite timelines and possibilities.
At 26-years-old, Kylie has an abortion while listening to One Direction. Like all abortions, hers opens up a wormhole establishing a multiverse of infinite realities and possibilities because she doesn’t have to give birth or parent.
In the main timeline, she goes on to pursue a doomed relationship with a married writer whose wife is pregnant. In one, she wins the Nobel Prize in Literature. In others, she: assassinates a health insurance CEO; builds a time machine and meets the six wives of Henry VIII; becomes the first female president of the United States—and is promptly impeached; cures cancer; has three more abortions; and recovers from debilitating sex addiction to get married and start a family.
Abortion is often treated as the ending, but Genesis invites readers to treat it as the beginning of infinite possibilities. In that sense, this novel in its entirety is a true story. Absurd, hilarious, and even horny, this novel is an honest look at sexual politics and human possibility, reimagining agency in mainstream culture. Abortion isn’t the end—it’s the beginning. A genesis.
Advance Praise
Previous Praise for Kylie Cheung
"[Survivor Injustice,] an astonishingly original, powerfully honest vision." —Kirkus, starred review
"[Coercion is] clear-eyed and cutting." —Publishers Weekly, starred review
"Thrilling, subversive, and smoking hot. Kylie Cheung scours the veneer off tired genre-fiction tropes to reveal a radical vision of power, victimization, reclamation, and purpose. This is no Marvel movie—only Werner Herzog could adapt My Boyfriend, the Superhero." —Spencer Ackerman, author of Iron Man and Pulitzer Prize winner
