Description
Southern England, 1982.
At 25, single, and under threat of redundancy from her job in a local library, Emily feels as though her life is going nowhere – until the day when Carl comes into the library asking for books about tracing family history.
Carl is baffled by a mystery about his late grandfather: why is the name by which Carl had always known him different from the name on his old passport?
Fascinated as much by Carl himself as by the puzzle he wants to solve, Emily tries to help him find the answers. As their relationship develops, their quest for the truth takes them along a complicated paper-trail which leads, eventually, to the battlefields of the Great War.
In the meantime, Emily discovers that her own family also has its fair share of secrets and lies. And old sins can still cast long shadows…
Can Emily finally lay the ghosts of the past to rest and look forward to a brighter future?
A tale of discovery, love and fate.

Emily is 25 and has been living with her aunt and uncle since she was 17, after her parent’s death. She feels like she is stuck, about to lose her job at the library to downsizing, no boyfriend and no friends to speak of she is not sure what to do to change the situation. Then Carl comes into the library and she feels an instant attraction to him but feeling it would be to forward to act on those feelings, as her mother’s famous words “Nice Girls Don’t” is always in her mind she waits and hopes Carl will make the first move. Carl is trying to trace his grandfather’s roots and while Emily becomes involved in the search with Carl she finds she has questions about her own life. Will she be able to let Carl know how she feels and does he feel the same way as she does? Will Carl find his roots and will Emily be able to answer her questions about her own past? Part romance, part mystery the author gives you just enough tempting tidbits to keep you reading. I would like to thank the publisher and Net Galley for the chance to read this ARC.
