Description
When
time-traveling gamer, Max, returns to medieval Germany to rescue a friend, he
quickly learns that evil forces are eager to hunt him down.
Book 3 in the ESCAPE FROM THE PAST SERIES
When Max learns that Karl helped spring him from
Schwarzburg’s dungeon during the first game, he feels obligated to return the
favor. Not only because it’s the right thing to do, but supposedly Max is the
one who rescued Karl from Hanstein in 1473 and helped him return home. When at
last Max finagles a way into the castle, Bero is less than pleased to see him,
Lady Clara is near death and Juliana is not meeting his eyes. Can Max sway his
friends, help Karl and stay out of Schwarzburg’s clutches? And will he ultimately
stop Dr. Stuler’s evil computer game?

Playing a computer game for fun is one thing…playing it for your life is something else!
Max Anderson feels forced to re-enter the Earthrider game which has nearly killed him before to repay a debt to the man who saved him. All he needs to do is find his old friend Bero, seek the help of Lord Werner of Hanstein and get Karl out of the game as quickly as possible. He may even get to pick up where he left off with Juliana!
But life has moved on in the Middle Ages. It is now 1473 and two years have passed. Duke Heinrich von Schwarzburg is still after Hanstein’s land, possessions and power and Max has to face hostile friends who were baffled at his sudden disappearance two years earlier. Even best friend Bero is wary of Max, taking a lot of convincing before he’s willing to help.
Max’s plan of getting Karl out starts to crumble as he comes face to face with Schwarzburg’s violence once again. He discovers more about the dangers of Stuler’s Earthrider game and its consequences as he risks losing those close to him. He just has to come up with something better if he’s to complete his mission and get home alive.
At Witches’ End is a cleverly crafted fast moving adventure, combining medieval rawness with a modern perspective. It portrays developing friendships that transcend time, historical detail that makes the setting powerfully real and shows the sometimes perilous journey of teenage coming-of-age.

This is the last of the Escape from the Past Novels from Annette Oppenlander and even though it came to a fabulous conclusion, it has still left me wanting more, but that's just me being greedy. This author has such a fantastic way of describing and bringing alive each character through her skillful use of narrative that it has left me feeling as though I have lost a bunch of friends. I know that this story will stay with me for a good while and for me, that's the sign of a great book.
