Sheep are so adorable and fluffy, this was such an enjoyable read.

The book consists of an introduction, the different types with their origin and lastly some pictures from the competitions.

Thank you Netgalley for providing me with the digital copy for an honest review.

As an avid spinner and knitter, I really enjoyed reading about the different sheep breeds. The book was fascinating and filled with beautiful photography. I would love to own a copy of this book someday.

This book was provided to me in exchange for my honest review.

A lovely coffee-table type book showcasing the different breeds of sheep, all lovingly groomed and perfectly posed! I have always loved sheep, and found this a charming look at the amazingly different breeds, from the soft and cuddly to the longer-legged and those with fearsome horns.
Thanks to the publisher for a review copy.

Beautiful Sheep is an introduction with a short history and a gallery showing the variation and beauty of different breeds of sheep. Originally published in the UK in 2008 this re-format and re-release is due out 3rd March 2020 from Quarto on their Ivy Press imprint, it's 112 pages and will be available in paperback format. All of the books in this series follow the same format and are all well done and attractive.

The authors have an accessible and informative style. The book has a good introduction with some history, uses, rare breeds, development of breed standards, and a very short capsule intro to shows. The intros are followed by a gallery listing of 40 sheep (some duplicate breeds, such as the Border Leicester), with a full color detail photo, breed intro with features, uses, related breeds, size/weight, and range/origin. The picture content also helpfully includes the age and sex of the subject (including reproductive status/castration). The end of the book contains some sepia-tone photos from specific show entry winners, along with an index and solid links lists for further reading.

Honestly the completeness of the bibliography and links are probably worth the cost of the book by themselves. Very well done. This would be a very good choice for a 4H or FFA intro to selecting and showing sheep or at least starting the necessary pre-purchase research. There is no animal husbandry content included here, this is a compendium of show quality healthy beautiful sheep in show condition.

A useful and appealing book and a good introduction to the conformation and looks of standard purebred sheep.

Four stars.

What a fantastic coffee table book!  This book includes a beautiful collection of photographs, along with a description of each breed - where it originated, where it can be found and why it is raised.  I had no idea that this many varieties of sheep existed in the UK - and that doesn't even include many of the breeds that are found in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, etc.

I loved this installment just as much as I loved “Beautiful Pigs,” which is to say a lot. Gorgeous photos and fun facts from cover to cover. I found the half-sheared sheep especially fascinating.

This was fun to read through and learn a bit about various sheep breeds. Some I'd heard of, some were new to me. Each breed is accompanied by short descriptions and a photo. This would be great for someone interested in sheep.

If I'm being completely honest I've always preferred goats over sheep, but I really enjoyed looking at these photos and learning more about the history of these animals and the different breeds. My daughter (who is 5) loved this book, because apparently sheep make funny faces when they're photographed and she thought these photos were the best thing since sliced bread.

An interesting coffee table book for anyone interested in showing sheep. I never knew there were so many different breeds of sheep out there and some that look more goat than cute fluffy sheep.

Delivers exactly what it promises: portraits of some truly remarkable-looking champion sheep, accompanied by tons of cool factoids about the breed, its origins (so many breeds from the UK!), where they live, and the various uses for their fleece. If you want to know a little more about sheep, then this is a good resource.

This is literally a book about Beautiful Sheep. With photos of forty different champion sheep representing their breed. Each breed page includes features, use, related breeds, size, origin, and current world distribution of each breed.

As a born and bred city girl, I’m not sure why I have a fascination with the variances in farm animal breeds. It may be related to my obsession with watching dog shows on television. I’m sure I’m not the only person running into the bedroom to watch the Puppy Bowl every Super Bowl Sunday. Right? RIGHT?

Anyway, the Beautiful Sheep depicted here are as varied as dog breeds. There are some that look like dogs, deer, cats, and someone you wouldn’t want to run into in a dark alley. Those horns mean business! Again, before you say how can you say a sheep looks like a cow, I’m a city girl who has never seen a sheep up close before.

If you like sheep or photography that really catches the essence of an animal’s personality, you will enjoy this book. 4 stars! More stars if you are a sheep rancher or sheep whisperer.

Thanks to Ivy Press, Quarto Books, and NetGalley for granting my wish for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

I'm not going to deny I requested this book at Netgalley mainly to look at the photos. The photos for the breeds are good and it was a bit interesting reading about the various breeds, especially the historical ones. I'm sure that those who are into sheep would like this book, although I wish it contained a bit more information at times, such as in terms of the sheep show collage and so on.

I found this strangely interesting. I won't lie, I was interested in reading this purely to see pictures of different sheep but I found the facts interesting and enjoyed the format. I'm sure this will be a big hit with sheep lovers/farm and livestock owners etc!

What a unique book! It portrays stunning photographs of 42 breeds of sheep, explaining their features, use, related breed, size, origin and distribution. The sheep look very healthy and it's quite funny to try to imagine their personality! :)

The first part of the book includes a history of the sheep, the development of breeds and how to best prepare for a show.

The last part of the book is supposed to be a reportage, but it was just a low-quality collage in sepia and black and white of photos from a sheep show. I was expecting some description, some interview or some funny anecdote. In this form, it didn't seem necessary or useful.

Overall, I really enjoyed seeing all those beautiful breeds of sheep and I would recommend this book to any sheep-lover :)
