Manga Drawing Deluxe Empower Your Drawing and Storytelling Skills is a new tutorial guide for art *and* storytelling by Wedding Peach creator Nao Yazawa. Due out 2nd June 2020 from Quarto on their Rockport imprint, it's 144 pages and will be available in paperback format.

This is one of the only books on manga techniques with which I'm familiar which includes good, solid, useful, practical tutorials and direction on storytelling in addition to drawing reference. The author manages to provide advice and tutelage in a humorous way without being pedantic or discouraging. (Including advice-giving manga elves). The introduction provides a good background of what manga is, why it's stylistically the way it is, and a very short background history.

The drawing instructions include poses, dynamics, movement, special effects, proportions, and more. There is relevant info available for everyone, beginners to professional artists. The following chapters give similar thorough treatment to drawing the body, pencil rough sketching, inking, proportion and perspective, effect lines, fukidashi (speech bubbles), a really good discussion on composition and storytelling narrative (introduction - development - twist - conclusion), making storyboards, and really everything to outfit the would-be manga artist from putting pen to paper through the finished product.

A very useful book. It would make a good addition to the artist's home reference library, a classroom or other formal instruction setting, or gift (with supplies). Beautifully made and one of the best manga tutorials I've seen.

Five stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

I follow Yazawa Nao on Facebook, but didn’t realize she was releasing a drawing book! If you have any experience with the How to Draw Manga series, this falls in line with the helpful tips and tricks of drawing. This is geared towards more beginner manga artists who want to actually create a comic. Her style is more shojo/josei in nature, so the art trends towards girls comics. Would definitely recommend to other artists.

This is by far the best comprehensive book on creating manga that I've ever come across. I am a professional manga artist and have looked through so many how-to books throughout the years, most of which were disappointing in some way. Manga Drawing Deluxe covers all the basics and so much more in a fun, and in-depth way that is easy to understand. If you're not drawing manga now, you will be after you've finished practicing what the author explains. Very well put together!

What an original way to treat a book on drawing manga! Not only is this book full of great tips and techniques, but it's also presented in a fun interactive way and it makes the point not by telling you how to do it only, but also by showing you how! Loved the presentation!

I like this book and I highly recommend it if you are interested in drawing manga art. I received this book from NetGalley and Quarto Publishing - Rockridge Publishing for an honest review. Although it was formatted a bit weirdly so i struggled in that sense

This book is a lot more advanced than I thought it would be but there are still practical skills that any novice could pick up from this book. It is very well detailed and shows examples of each item/character for your attempt to draw them. It also gives you enough skill to branch out into your own drawings and concepts.

I am currently working on a workshop at my library in which I want to show how to draw your own manga characters.

This book is cool for Teens who have some experience with drawing cause you have to read and understand what you gotta do.

I am looking at all the different styles and also how to draw your own comic.

I think this is going to become super fun and I am looking forward for that.

So thanks for letting me read this book.

If you've ever wanted to learn how to draw in a traditional manga style, but you can't fly to Japan to take one-on-one lessons with a Japanese mangaka then this is the book for you. Yazawa is an accomplished artist and storyteller in her own right but in recent years has made a name for herself teaching students from a variety of backgrounds basic manga techniques that they can apply to their own work.

Manga Drawing Deluxe takes inspiration from Yazawa's course work and brings it to life through a story involving two siblings unlocking their artistic potential that runs parallel with the book's drawing lessons. I'll be completely upfront with you: I can't draw and have never been particularly inspired to give it a try, but even I found myself being caught up in the story and understanding basic skills that every artist should master.

That being said, this book is definitely aimed at a younger demographic or for people really just starting out with manga-style art. If you're already an artist, while there are some great tips later in the book for turning your ideas into a fully-fledged manga, the early chapters might not be necessary for you. If you're like me and you have young people in your life interested in anime/manga and wanting to learn more about how to draw then this is definitely the best English-language book to give them, hands down. Other books available on the market don't tend to explain WHY things are done certain ways and HOW following a guide such as this enhances your work, but Manga Drawing Deluxe never leaves you doubting the why or the how -- truly refreshing in this genre.

Overall, this is a highly recommended book for manga art beginners and for those wanting to learn more practical techniques to boost existing skills. Nao Yazawa is an adept teacher and Manga Drawing Deluxe is the textbook up-and-coming mangaka need to fully unleash their potential.

Good reference book. The steps and methods are very easy to understand. At the same time, quite fun to follow through while learning along. Had been waiting for a long time to start making manga drawings and this book helped.

Amazing. Amazing
The initial bit of Manga Elves is very engaging.

This is an encyclopaedia of Manga drawing. Starts with face and moves into body.
Would recommend this book to any Manga lover.

Using a small manga as an introduction was a nice idea. And having little characters be the teachers was cute. But they had this forceful and quick way of explaining things that wasn’t all that clear. I didn’t like that they mentioned some important details of drawing, but then they didn’t expand upon them. At times the pages felt too cluttered. Too many things happening all on top of each other. That is not very conductive to learning. The book has a very childish basic feel to it. I would recommend this to a younger audience who only has a beginner’s interest in manga.

This truly is a deluxe book...probably the most thorough I’ve seen lately. I particularly like that the lessons are shown in examples. Definitely aids in visualizing the steps.

Content:
Every manga or anime fang wanted to draw their own characters or re-draw their favorite ones. In this book the author describes how to draw your own mangas step by step and with example pictures wich are also described in detail. It starts by only drawing faces and ends with doing whole pages of mangas, including the speech bubbles.

Opinion:
In my opinion it is a very well structured manga drawing book that starts from the beginning and ends by doing your own manga. The descriptions are not too hard to understand and also the example pictures help a lot. I tried some of the drawings out and it went very well. Actually, I think that I'm gonna use the book a lot because I'm a huge manga and anime fan and I wanted to draw like this for years.

Conclusion:
All in all, this is a well and understandable written book about drawing mangas. For each manga and/or anime fan it is a must have. So, I would definitelly recommend it!

This book is filled with amazing art! This is an exceptional book on the art of Manga drawing. The attention to detail and the tips are fantastic. The tutorials on how to properly draw faces and hair are amazingly well done.

It details that even the most basic drawings and how they need details in the flow and direction (of the hair) to make it feel and look more realistic. It also details that in action scenes one must pay attention to how real hair would move to make the drawings more convincing. Every section in the book has tips like this from age, eyes clothing everything is covered.

I love this book and I highly recommend it if you are interested in drawing manga art.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

This book is jam packed full of amazing ideas, information and detail, it is a fantastic guide and out of all the manga drawing books I have read and reviewed this one has so far been the most in-depth and informative by far.
I loved the way the book starts with two manga characters (a girl and her brother) who are shown how to draw Manga by two chibis. It was a unique introduction and I loved it.

Out of all the "How to Draw or Create..." books I've read, this one definitely has the best detailed breakdown of the manga creative process. I especially enjoyed the breakdown of space, lighting and visual perspectives. As someone who has freelanced in the manga industry for the last decade, even I learned some new techniques and a better understanding of that creative process.
Thank you Yazawa-sensei for letting me review your book.

Manga Drawing Deluxe is, hands-down, the best manga drawing book of all those I've read in the past year since I became interested in learning how to draw manga-style characters. This work has a lot going for it. To begin with, I loved the way the information was given in the form of a manga story as we follow a young girl and her brother learning to draw manga with help from two cute chibis. The detail included in this book is amazing. As well as in-depth look at character design, with reference to an understanding of anatomy etc., the book also covers creating storyboards and adding backgrounds, special effects and dialogue. I enjoyed this book so much and appreciated all the great tips packed into it that I have added it to my TBD wishlist and intend to buy a copy to keep on my shelf once it releases. It's definitely a book I would want to refer to again and again as I try to improve my manga-drawing technique.
