Unfortunately I went on a requesting spree during lockdown and my tastes have since changed.

As the book has been on my shelf since 2020 or 2021 I believe I need a cull as I am highly unlikely to ever read it.

To be fair to the author I have star reviewed based on the average.

I was a huge fan of this book and couldn’t put it down.
It kept me on my toes throughout and I didn’t guess any of the plot twists

Thank you for the advanced copy of this book - not at all what I was expecting.
I had trouble putting this down! Great story, well written, good characters, recommended oh yes

A crushing story where you too feel the overwhelming oppression of a life lived under coercive control. The fact that it takes the women so long to react and to take back control is depicted sympathetically as a work of fiction but feels instructional as a work of reference as well.

The book started off with the cops informing Mia about the death of her ex-husband Rob. Then came the present wife of the ex, Rachel, her father, then a letter from her mother, in fact, Rachel’s entire family came to Mia’s doorstep, asking for her help. I wondered why. Was it because she was the one that got away.

The story was told from Mia’s POV in dual timelines. The past bespoke of her time with Rob, which was far more interesting as it showed me how Rob eroded her confidence and made her lesser than herself. The present time showed me that she had a secret that she was hiding from the cops which was dragged until the last few pages.

The writing was good, suspense could have been sprinkled uniformly in the prose. This was quite slow paced and many a time, I wanted to ask Mia to run away. Rob was a typical smooth operator, the forked tongue who could make any woman fall for him with his charm. Mia tried hard to gain my support and sympathy. Never understood the rest of the characters. There was just so much of anger and bitterness amongst them. Better motives for every character might have made it far more interesting.

Overall, it was a good tale.

Rob Creavy has been shot dead. And, quite frankly a man like him has so many enemies it's anyone's guess who could have shot him.

The first part of this story is told from the perspective of Mia in the present. Who is Robs ex-wife. And, that of Jess told in the past narrative. Through their stories we start to piece together the nasty piece of work that Rob is. He charms the ladies, promises them the world then basically as his name suggests, Robs them blind. Like I said, he's got plenty of people with good motive to kill him.

We slowly uncover that Mia isn't quite as squeaky clean as she's trying to make out. What secrets is she keeping? And, who on earth is sending her nasty emails?

The One That Got Away is a great mystery drama. I love the way that the story and lies start to disentangle. When you think you have one mystery solved then another bombshell explodes and you have more mysteries to uncover.

The synopsis for The One That Got Away sounding really interesting so I'd been looking forward to reading it over the summer while imagining being on a yacht off the coast of Greece seeing as real holidays aren't possible at the moment!

The plot starts with the murder of Mia's ex-husband, Rob. We learn that Mia had escaped an emotionally abusive relationship and Mia carries the scars from that relationship. She also seems to have some guilt over his murder and we find out she was actually with Rob on the day he was killed. Mia is introduced to Rob's new wife Rachel who is in a frantic, emotional state after being questioned over his murder. Rachel comes to Mia for help with both women knowing how they were treated by him, hoping they can be victims who support each other. Mia's account is split between "before" the murder and "after", showing us what she experienced throughout her relationship and how it has affected the person she is now. There is also a third account from a mystery woman who also seems to have had a relationship with Rob. These three women have all been wronged by Rob and all of them in their own right had motive for murder... but who is truly responsible for the man they once each loved?

The One That Got Away seemed quite promising at the start, especially with the first twist. Soon after that, I felt like we were going round in circles. We got the idea of how Rob treated Mia, how he treats women in general but I started to feel like the backstory wasn't giving us much to help reach the conclusion. Each of the women is put forward as possible culprits with their own motive but then quickly discounted on account of evidence or their own admissions. I just felt like this could've been developed better to make this story more enjoyable as it did feel a bit like going round in circles to drag out the ending.

I think there are plenty of readers out there who would enjoy this book but I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped. A middle of the line 3 star read for me. Still happy to recommend as an easy summer read for fans of this genre.

This is a gripping and addictive read, dark and bitter, a read that I will not forget.
I always know that books with an abusive husband touch me deeply, I don’t think it is easy to step outside the relation without any mental scars, it doesn’t matter for how long it has been the abuse, the life will never look the same as before.
This is the story of Mia, Rachel and Rob, Mia is the one that “got away”, Rachel is the new wife and Rob is the abusive husband that has appeared dead. As you can imagine there are a lot motives to want Rob dead, but the main question is “Why Now?”
The story will be told between the past and the present; the investigation of the murder and the story of Jess, how a beautiful love story transforms into a nightmare. Since the beginning you know that Mia is hiding something, she is scared that the police discovers that she saw Rob on the fateful night and she is receiving some menacing letters on the email. But the mystery remains the same, she left that horrible life, now she has a boyfriend and a “normal” life, why would she risk everything by killing Rob? Or she didn’t do it and there’s someone else wanting him dead?
As you can see there are a lot of questions popping to your mind while you are reading this book, but be prepared, this will not be an easy book. It will touch you and wonder if there’s any way to help all the women that are every day abused by their loved ones. Because leaving the monster is not the only difficult step on the path, they normally try to find you again…

I love domestic suspense, so I was really excited to read this one. But as I read, I found this was so un-surprising and un-suspenseful that I started to feel like Jess/Mia wasn't very smart because she never seemed to catch up when other people were untrustworthy,, and that made her seem less sympathetic. I also didn't fully buy into the romance -- readers don't get enough of a chance to see Rob as an attractive, caring boyfriend before he starts being controlling and awful, which also made Jess seem less than smart for getting caught up with him.

I gotta be honest. This was a struggle. Although the premise sounded interesting it didn't manage to get my attention at all and every other chapter I found myself distracted checking my phone, and that's a pretty bad sign when I'm reading. I think one of the reasons I didn't find this as compelling as I would have liked was the narrative style. While being pretty slow paced at the same time it felt like things were happening so quickly, with conversations ending abruptly and jumping from scene to scene in a way that it felt disjointed some times. Also, some conversations were repeated over and over not adding anything new to the story.

And the characters weren't my favorite either. Rob was despicable and Jess was so naive and gullible that it was hard to read how she took everything in stride while he gashlighted and alienated her. Throw him overboard! I found infuriating how she knew something was amiss with her husband and she acted so passive, not doing anything about it.

While it has several twists, I guessed all of them (minus the one in the epilogue that felt like an add on just for the sake of adding another twist), so I wasn't surprised at all...and I WANT TO BE SURPRISED!

This was a really great book! I was surprised as I thought it had a fairly slow start and then the pace picked up and before I realised it, I was hooked.

I really liked the characters, the setting and the storyline. It felt like it wasn't an overdone storyline with lots of twists and turns and surprises along the way. I was double guessing the whole time. I also liked the timeline jumps from now to the past - and the little secret chapters in between from the 'unknown person' - and then it all falls into place!

Thank you to NetGalley and Little Brown Book Group UK for the arc of The One Who Got Away written by Egan Hughes.

Thank you for Egan Hughes for writing this compelling gritty book.

This involves a man named Rob Creavy- whom is an controlling ex husband of Mia, is found dead on the boat in which he owns. There are several suspects of whom it could be... including his new and current wife named Rachel and of course Mia herself.. but who actually killed him? anf were either of these viable suspects to the killing...? Or are there other suspects in the mix who wished that Rob is dead...

This leaves you guessing and asking questions right up to the end and the ending is remarkable... one of them books in which you will not be able to guess in a million years.. it had me shook! but totally loved all the twists, turns and mysteries... definitely a summer read... 100% recommend!

Rob Greavy is found dead on his boat. There's two prime suspects. The first eing his ex-wife, Mia. The second is his current wife Jessica. Mia wasnt where she told the police she had been the night Rob was killed. Jessica's marital relationship with Rob was disintegrating and she had realised he wasnt the man she thought he was.

What a gripping page turner this is. Mia and Rachel are the prime suspects in Rob's murder. But could the women be innocent and someone else responsible? This is what I couldn't quite make up my ,I d about. It's well written, full of twists and had an ending I didn't see coming. Rob was not a likable character so basically anyone who knew him could have been the culprit. Loved this book.

What an incredible book. And a debut too! An amazing, adrenaline filled Whodunit.
When Mia's ex husband dies she becomes a person of interest in his death. Mia's ex Rob was abusive and we learn just how badly as the story goes on. We learn she is deeply scarred by the relationship, but enough to exact revenge? Then there's Rachel, Rob's widow. Had she had enough and snapped?

With the majority of the book set on a boat in the Mediterranean this is the perfect Summer read and I can guarantee you will never guess the end! Brilliant. I can't wait to read more from this author. Highly recommended xx
