Mia was my favourite character. I was wrong about her.

Well that was twisty and then some! What a plot with its who did it and why? I didn't guess and though the ending deserved a high five.

The women in the story are on top form. Not who or what you think and as the mystery unravels, it all gets very twisty indeed. I did find it a bit drawn out but then by the end, all was revealed.

The novel is set in the UK but there is a lot to love if you're a fan of sailing and boats. That's the activity of choice here and there's scenes and memories of sailing in the Greek islands and beyond. All sounds nice but then you remember that body on the boat...

A domestic noir thriller with a husband and wife team you really get under the skin of.

I very much enjoyed reading this book.

When I first read the blurb, I was already intrigued and thankfully the story delivered! The characters are well written and the story itself is executed in great detail! Highly recommend!

The One That Got Away is breathtaking!

Reading the synopsis it’s clear that this is going to be a strong story but I was still underprepared for how strong it is! The writing style is fantastic and I’m impressed with how realistic the characters were (especially Mia).

Overall this is a dark twisty tale. You need to read it!

This was a thrilling read! The varying perspectives were great and not too confusing. Whenever I thought I knew what happened, a surprise turn made me question my own presumption. All the twists and turns kept me guessing until the very last page. Well done!
I felt for Mia, the main character, and liked how her story was told. I’ll definitely be thinking about this book for a while.
Thank you for the advance copy!

Egan Hughes injects some much need adrenaline into the thriller genre with, 'The One That Got Away'. I devoured this read in one-sitting, relishing every cleverly-plotted twist and turn in Hughes' compelling narrative. The premise: Rob Creavy, controlling ex-husband of Mia, is found dead on his boat. There a number of suspects for his murder, not least Mia, but also Rachel, his current wife. Are either viable suspects? Or, are there others who would wish the eminently unlikeable Rob dead? These are the pertinent questions that keep the reader preoccupied during the course of this novel. But, if you expect the answers to come easily, you couldn't be more wrong. Hughes deploys all the rhetorical armoury of a true thriller writer to confound her readers, until the final, stunning denouement of, 'The One That Got Away'. Even with the benefit of hindsight, I wouldn't have been able to guess the ending in a million years. This, for me, is the true joy of reading a true mystery that lives up to its billing... and then some.
Absolutely engrossing. Recommended to my book group.

4.5 stars.

This was a fantastic read and had me hooked from the start.

Mia is trying to move on from her troubled relationship with her controlling ex, and all seems to be looking up....until he is found dead.
This forces Mia to take a look at her past, and face her demons... and also try to work out exactly what did happen to her ex Rob.

The story itself is full of twists and turns, and I personally love the tale being told from varying perspectives. The only thing I would say, is that I did figure out 'whodunnit' early on in this book, but it in no way took away any enjoyment from it!. It had me hooked from the start and was written perfectly truly making you feel for the characters and their situations.

Thank you to Egan Hughes, NetGalley and Little Brown book group for my ARC of this book in return for my honest review.

The One Who Got Away by Egan Hughes
Thanks @netgalley @littlebrown for my arc. Out 6th August 2020

What an incredible book. And a debut too! An amazing, adrenaline filled Whodunit.
When Mia's ex husband dies she becomes a person of interest in his death. Mia's ex Rob was abusive and we learn just how badly as the story goes on. We learn she is deeply scarred by the relationship, but enough to exact revenge? Then there's Rachel, Rob's widow. Had she had enough and snapped?

With the majority of the book set on a boat in the Mediterranean this is the perfect Summer read and I can guarantee you will never guess the end! Brilliant. I can't wait to read more from this author. Highly recommended xx

Thank you to NetGalley and Little Brown Book Group UK for the arc of The One Who Got Away written by Egan Hughes.

Thank you for Egan Hughes for writing this compelling gritty book.

This involves a man named Rob Creavy- whom is an controlling ex husband of Mia, is found dead on the boat in which he owns. There are several suspects of whom it could be... including his new and current wife named Rachel and of course Mia herself.. but who actually killed him? anf were either of these viable suspects to the killing...? Or are there other suspects in the mix who wished that Rob is dead...

This leaves you guessing and asking questions right up to the end and the ending is remarkable... one of them books in which you will not be able to guess in a million years.. it had me shook! but totally loved all the twists, turns and mysteries... definitely a summer read... 100% recommend!

Rob Greavy is found dead on his boat. There's two prime suspects. The first eing his ex-wife, Mia. The second is his current wife Jessica. Mia wasnt where she told the police she had been the night Rob was killed. Jessica's marital relationship with Rob was disintegrating and she had realised he wasnt the man she thought he was.

What a gripping page turner this is. Mia and Rachel are the prime suspects in Rob's murder. But could the women be innocent and someone else responsible? This is what I couldn't quite make up my ,I d about. It's well written, full of twists and had an ending I didn't see coming. Rob was not a likable character so basically anyone who knew him could have been the culprit. Loved this book.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Little, Brown Book Group and the author Egan Hughes for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a really great book! I was surprised as I thought it had a fairly slow start and then the pace picked up and before I realised it, I was hooked.

I really liked the characters, the setting and the storyline. It felt like it wasn't an overdone storyline with lots of twists and turns and surprises along the way. I was double guessing the whole time. I also liked the timeline jumps from now to the past - and the little secret chapters in between from the 'unknown person' - and then it all falls into place!

This is a gripping and addictive read, dark and bitter, a read that I will not forget.
I always know that books with an abusive husband touch me deeply, I don’t think it is easy to step outside the relation without any mental scars, it doesn’t matter for how long it has been the abuse, the life will never look the same as before.
This is the story of Mia, Rachel and Rob, Mia is the one that “got away”, Rachel is the new wife and Rob is the abusive husband that has appeared dead. As you can imagine there are a lot motives to want Rob dead, but the main question is “Why Now?”
The story will be told between the past and the present; the investigation of the murder and the story of Jess, how a beautiful love story transforms into a nightmare. Since the beginning you know that Mia is hiding something, she is scared that the police discovers that she saw Rob on the fateful night and she is receiving some menacing letters on the email. But the mystery remains the same, she left that horrible life, now she has a boyfriend and a “normal” life, why would she risk everything by killing Rob? Or she didn’t do it and there’s someone else wanting him dead?
As you can see there are a lot of questions popping to your mind while you are reading this book, but be prepared, this will not be an easy book. It will touch you and wonder if there’s any way to help all the women that are every day abused by their loved ones. Because leaving the monster is not the only difficult step on the path, they normally try to find you again…
Ready to discover “The One That Got Away”?
