Great read!
I have really enjoyed this one, definitely kept me guessing. My first read by this author but won’t be the last.

The One That Got Away is a book that pulls you in it's grip and does not let you go till the last page with an ending that is incredibly hard to predict.

This was a fantastic read and had me hooked from the start.

Mia is trying to move on from her troubled relationship with her controlling ex, and all seems to be looking up....until he is found dead.
This forces Mia to take a look at her past, and face her demons... and also try to work out exactly what did happen to her ex Rob.

The story itself is full of twists and turns, and I personally love the tale being told from varying perspectives. The only thing I would say, is that I did figure out 'whodunnit' early on in this book, but it in no way took away any enjoyment from it!. It had me hooked from the start and was written perfectly truly making you feel for the characters and their situations.

Thank you to Egan Hughes, NetGalley and Little Brown book group for my ARC of this book in return for my honest review.

This sounded like the type of book I like to read and indeed it was. Mia is quite a gullible character who falls for a seemingly older man (why are they always older men in these cases?). However all is not as it seems and in addition to other women who turn up along the way you find out that Rob is a complex character. Unlike other reviewers, I was not surprised by the ending and felt it came in a rush after the long haul of the content up to that point. Overall I found the book rather drawn out and it would have had a higher rating from me if it lost 20% of the writing.

Egan Hughes injects some much need adrenaline into the thriller genre with, 'The One That Got Away'. I devoured this read in one-sitting, relishing every cleverly-plotted twist and turn in Hughes' compelling narrative. The premise: Rob Creavy, controlling ex-husband of Mia, is found dead on his boat. There a number of suspects for his murder, not least Mia, but also Rachel, his current wife. Are either viable suspects? Or, are there others who would wish the eminently unlikeable Rob dead? These are the pertinent questions that keep the reader preoccupied during the course of this novel. But, if you expect the answers to come easily, you couldn't be more wrong. Hughes deploys all the rhetorical armoury of a true thriller writer to confound her readers, until the final, stunning denouement of, 'The One That Got Away'. Even with the benefit of hindsight, I wouldn't have been able to guess the ending in a million years. This, for me, is the true joy of reading a true mystery that lives up to its billing... and then some.
Absolutely engrossing. Recommended to my book group.

4.5 stars.

The One That Got Away is breathtaking!

Reading the synopsis it’s clear that this is going to be a strong story but I was still underprepared for how strong it is! The writing style is fantastic and I’m impressed with how realistic the characters were (especially Mia).

Overall this is a dark twisty tale. You need to read it!

This was a thrilling read! The varying perspectives were great and not too confusing. Whenever I thought I knew what happened, a surprise turn made me question my own presumption. All the twists and turns kept me guessing until the very last page. Well done!
I felt for Mia, the main character, and liked how her story was told. I’ll definitely be thinking about this book for a while.
Thank you for the advance copy!

I very much enjoyed reading this book.

When I first read the blurb, I was already intrigued and thankfully the story delivered! The characters are well written and the story itself is executed in great detail! Highly recommend!

My thanks to NetGalley and publisher Little, Brown Book Group UK - Sphere, for the ARC.
This was an OK read, intriguing enough to keep your attention as you switch from before and after and gradually realise who the main characters really are, but I did find it necessary to employ a certain amount of skim-reading over passages of narrative where a character's 'musings' were too lengthy and repetitive..

Told from present day where Rob Creavy has been found murdered on his boat, and then the past, with three women who had been involved with him - all of whom have secrets, all have motive, all have opportunity. Detective Sergeant Thornley is determined to get to the truth.
Rob was a master manipulator, a liar, a con-man, and a psychological controller of those around him - all with the aim of living off their money. He isolates his prey, refuses to be part of social media and virtually terrorizes his victims. He is the epitome of a domestic coercive controller. A nasty piece of work.

All the women come under suspicion - Mia, who divorced him and re-built her life with Ben as her boyfriend, though the past tells a different story; Rachel, Rob's widow, and Sky - Rob's sister in the past but the present tells a different story. All three cast suspicion on each other; threatening emails are received.

This is a story of revenge, but who killed Rob?

To be quite honest, despite re-reading passages, I actually have no idea who did it!
Cleverly written and presented, but for me, has some shortcomings.

Not a bad book , kept me interested with the present and before chapters . Hard to read at times with the coercive control but these things do happen in real life . I’d be quite interested in reading more from this author

Well that was twisty and then some! What a plot with its who did it and why? I didn't guess and though the ending deserved a high five.

The women in the story are on top form. Not who or what you think and as the mystery unravels, it all gets very twisty indeed. I did find it a bit drawn out but then by the end, all was revealed.

The novel is set in the UK but there is a lot to love if you're a fan of sailing and boats. That's the activity of choice here and there's scenes and memories of sailing in the Greek islands and beyond. All sounds nice but then you remember that body on the boat...

A domestic noir thriller with a husband and wife team you really get under the skin of.

This one was pretty twisty- some more obvious than others but still an enjoyable ride. 3.5 rounded up.

Wao is all o can say for this book.
Mia thinks she has escaped her controlling ex-husband, Rob. She's found herself a new home, a new boyfriend and a new life. But when the police arrive to tell her that Rob has been found dead on his boat, things quickly fall apart. Mia is terrified she'll be suspected, however the police are keeping all options open. They know Mia had reason to hate her ex-husband, but she's not the only one. Plenty of people wanted Rob Creavy dead, not least his new wife, Rachel. What they don't know is that Mia has a secret, one she's desperate to protect.
Mia was my favourite character. I was wrong about her.
Thanks to NetGalley and Little Brown Book UK for giving me an advance copy.
