ATOMIC LOVE
by

Jennie Fields

An unusual angle for what is a historical romantic thriller resulting in a superb story that grips from the first page.
Rosalind is a highly intelligent nuclear scientist who now works in a jewellers shop in Chicago. She is lonely and bored and devastated that Wheeler, who had been the love of her life betrayed her.
Rosalind was a superb student and was the only woman in her section of the Manhattan Project where they created the Atomic Bomb. When Rosalins saw the devastation caused by what she helped to build she is overwhelmed with guilt, hence her lonely life now.
Wheeler begins to contact her again hinting at secrets he must confess to her. He betrayed her once. he is contrite and loving but there are dark secrets there and how can she trust him.
Espionage, war, love, betrayal - finely crafted cocktail of themes with sharp characters and beautiful written. The plot darkens and thickens into a exciting and most enjoyable read.
A thought provoking book that this reader could not put down. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Atomic love by Jennie Fields was an unexpected treasure of a read.
Subterfuge, threat, love interest, societal expectations/restrictions all are elements very expertly woven into this gripping story of Rosalind and her erstwhile lover and colleague, Weaver. Whilst the main thrust of the storyline is about them, and possible Russian espionage, I really liked how Rosalind’s sister Louisa’s character was nicely developed throughout the book. I love Rosalind’s eventual reflections on their relationship and her growing realisation and acknowledgement of how much Louisa has done for her. It’s so often true of strong, ambitious and successful women that they don’t pay attention to others and their emotions. It was such a turning point for Louisa (& a revelation to Rosalind) when Roz actually took time to listen and scratch below Louisa’s anger and hurt to help them both realise that something deeper needed to be explored so that Louisa could live her best life too. What can I say about Charlie other than that he deserved so much love and tenderness. His gentle, caring spirit came across strongly and the hurt and brutality he suffered was well articulated. I felt I got to know his sister too so that the sense of love and family was evident in his life. The backdrop to the story was obviously the development of the atom bomb and Roz’s contribution to that, alongside her scientific brilliance and genuine desire to see a better world as a result of her work. The romantic in me would have loved a slightly different ending but the feminist in me applauds the writer.....and I live in hope that the two aspirations are compatible. Loved this book. Definitely 4 .5 stars.

I wasn't sure if this would be my kind of book from the title. However, once I started it I was gripped and couldn't put the book down. So glad I've had the chance to read this thriller.

A phenomenal read- fundamentally a love story but so much more as well.
Rosalind is a woman in a mans world, working on the Manhattan Project and involved with one of her fellow scientists we meet Rosalind, heartbroken and working at a jewellery counter in Chicago 1950, distanced from the world of physics and from her former colleagues and friends.
What follows is an intricate love story, wound around espionage and the leaking of atomic secrets to Russia, touching on the emotional and physical effects of the war and of the bomb and putting Rosalind in a seemingly impossible situation of trust, love and betrayal.
Rosalind is an excellent leading lady, strong, intelligent, empathetic and not one to swoon into the arms of the first handsome chap who comes along.
The historical details and the short dips into the role of women during and after the war all add to the story and make it a wonderful read that takes you along right beside Rosalind.

I didn't choose this book, it was offered to me, but I'm so glad that I read it. Set in Chicago in 1950 this is a thriller / romance with many references back to the Manhattan Project. The ethical issues of atomic bombs are addressed, as is the wish to develop peacetime uses for nuclear energy. Mainly though this is an espionage thriller involving the FBI preventing the Russians from stealing secrets from the west to develop their own nuclear capability. Chicago is brought to life and the characters are interesting. A great read.
