A good start to a series. Likeable but flawed main character. Some of the twists were a little easy to predict but kept me hooked and will definitely read the next in the series.

This novel travels into the darkest depths of mistrust, Detective Kate returns to work following a catastrophic event which leads Kate to have to prove herself to her superiors despite not quite feeling she is up for it.

I really enjoyed the strong female lead with good character development, and the other interesting characters. The plot moves at a steady pace which allowed me to be able to absorb the information better,.

This is definitely a book I will recommend and I look forward to any future stories.

This book was sent to me on Kindle by Netgalley free for a review. While the story is intriguing at times, the subject matter sometimes is outlandish. Somewhat like watching a really disturbing mystery movie. The protagonist was mysterious but guessing some of her actions early on was easy. This is not my favorite but others might get into it more readily.

Another series from Carol Wyer! I'm excited!
A little bit dark and gruesome - which I love!
Definitely hooked from start to finish, storywise.
For me, however, I do think, at the moment; I prefer Wyer's other series, this main character hasn't quite grown on me yet like the others have.
Looking forward to the next.

It took some time to really get into the book if I am going to be honest. But the read was very much entertaining.

Kate is called back into work after a most recent traumatic event to solve a murder. Even though all odds are against her from the beginning she pulls through and definitely was the right person for the job.
i would have to say that the most interesting part for me was how the murderer was killing their victims. Choking them with apples and cutting out their eyes?! Insane!
I do have to say the reveal was my favorite part. I was surprised to know that it was Faith. Not surprised on why she did it. Honestly bringing in the real truth to certain TABOO groups involved in trafficking and underage prostitution is fresh to see. Carol was right to choose this as the background to bring some light to the public. Hard to read but very realistic. Especially reading Faith tell Kate that if she didn't involve herself the police would have NEVER investigated the disappearance of her nephew.
I will say that the last chapter I was expecting more, it slowed down a bit. I was hoping to stay at the edge of my seat, BUT the last page made it. I just hopeed i would've fast forward to the end.

This book was a slow burner for me, and I was starting to wonder where it was going when it picked up the pace, and gathered momentum.
I really liked Kate, and by the end of the booked I was hooked and already want more. Great read.

This is a 5 star read for sure. A new book by Carol Wyler is always welcome. Especially if it’s the first in a new series featuring detective Kate Young, a proficient and recognized leader. Now there’s something wrong, Kate is afraid of her own shadow, popping pills and on leave from a traumatic event on the job which we learn about throughout the novel. Going back to work too soon, Kate is recruited by the chief himself. The same man who insisted earlier she take a longer leave of absence to recover. I loved Everything about this woman. I loved everything about the mystery of this introductory novel that seems to be figuring in te next one too. Can’t wait to start book 2, especially if book 1 was this strong in character introduction and development.

Quality characters and writing that make the reader almost feel part of the story. A Police procedural but much more, there is a psychological part that builds as you read with plenty of surprises and twists along the way, eighty percent into the book and I thought I knew the killer, and what do you know around about the same time our heroine agreed. Slightly disappointing end in one respect, but presumably that continues into book two and perhaps beyond.
Heartily recommended.

DI Kate Young is on leave. She’s traumatised from an event that happened earlier in the year and on medication to help her cope. Very unexpectedly she’s asked back by her boss and fathers best friend at the request of a more senior officer. A harder more suspicious detective returns. She heads up a small team and begins investigating the murder and the bodies keep coming in. Will she be able to solve this before anyone else dies? I recommend this book. It’s fast paced and also has a psychological element to it. There are many questions raised during this book that are all answered by the end. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading further books in this series. Interesting premise for a new detective series; a broken cop almost cracking up before the reader’s eyes.

A new author to me and one worthy of additional attention as quite original ideas flow from her pen.
If you like baffling police procedurals then this book is for you.

Based in Stoke on Trent and I don’t think “The Potteries” or Alton Towers has been over-egged yet. Indeed this plot has the case spanning a couple of counties including places I’m familiar with bringing a more comfortable feel to the book.
DI Kate Young appears to be dealing with the horror of a previous terrorist incident; resentful the case was kept away from her and suffering from flashbacks and PTSD symptoms. She is barely coping at home, yet she is requested to head up a small team into the suspicious death of a senior police officer’s old school chum.
At times she feels she’s being manipulated. Set up to fail for reasons connected to the mass shooting on a train. Unable to function without the tablets she has become dependent on.

I like the development of the investigation. However it seems to be a MIT to be based on just three officers on the case. The work seems to be outsourced in part to others like the tech department but the seriousness of the crimes seems at odds with the resources involved.

Another frustration is that no-one is honest in their replies to police questioning which leads to delays in firm evidence being found. A ploy crime writers use to spread doubt and raise the number of people of interest. While it does not confuse the plot it does stall the process and allows the perpetrator more time to carry out their actions without suspicion or motive becoming clear. The links to an overseas trip is a clever example where this works well. Elsewhere the reasons for incomplete and evasive answers to the questioning is less clear.

Another weakness for me is the signalling of who is behind it all. It is provided without doubt too early and the reaction to who the suspect could be is initially clumsily set aside and out of step with the reader’s own intelligence.

This sense of more senior police manipulation within the book looks like it will be carried forward and Kate Young’s tenacity appears to be the means to get behind this and uncover the truth in future instalments.
A easy read, well paced and with many new ideas to bring to this genre. I will be interested to follow Kate’s journey in the books that follow.

First book featuring a new detective, one called back into service whilst off on compassionate leave. It sounded interesting and would have been if there had been less flashbacks, panic attacks (with all the details) and imaginary conversations. It was monotonous and after the first couple of times my eyes glazed over and I just turned the pages, not even skim reading until it/they had passed. I was tempted to jump to the last chapters to see if I was correct about “whodunnit” (I was) but stuck it out to the end. Also if a specific day and date is used you’d think someone would check to see if it was correct but not in this book! I’ve enjoyed this author’s previous novels but think I will give Kate’s future cases a miss. No doubt this new team will be popular with other readers.

Despite the fact that I had never read anything by this author before, I absolutely loved this book. I like murder mysteries, and this one had me wondering for the most of the time. I did figure out who was responsible before the conclusion, but it didn't detract from my pleasure. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens in the remainder of the series.

Wow! This book started off a little slow. Kate is a detective on leave after a traumatic incident. When she is called in to work on a case of a serial killer, she is a little bit harder and more cynical. Along the way her team uncovers secrets and faces challenges from outside sources. The second half of the book really picks up and a great twist at the end.

This is a great detective series that I really enjoyed reading.
I am not sure if it because of how many of these books that I read, but I guessed the ending to this book more or less within the first half of the book.
I can see this series being made into a tv series, one which I would definitely watch!

I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of Carol Wyer’s detective series so got really excited when I saw a new series had begun!! This is the first instalment in the DI Kate Young series and what an explosive start…. Kate is back from leave after a traumatic experience, unsure of herself and her capabilities, she is teamed with DS Emma Donaldson and DS Morgan Meredith on a murder case. Kate is a force to be reckoned with and I look forward to developments in her character and see her go from strength to strength. This new series will keep you gripped from the getgo and keep you reading well into the night… it is a fast paced police procedural crime novel with as many twists as a country lane, I can’t wait for the next one.

I finished this the day before yesterday and I rushed right to the next book in the series, completely forgetting that I haven't yet given any feedback on here.

It took me quite long to start reading this because I can't seem to get with the beginning. It's like my attention just floats away and before I knew it, I've been reading without understanding.

But then halfway through Chapter 1, things got a bit intense, piqued my curiousity and then there was a weird sense of foreboding.

It's fun chasing the whole story because of the many twists and turns. Often I had to read some parts again and again just make sure that I understood it correctly, all the while making me more confused.

I think if you're an avid fan of mysteries and thrillers, this is one that you have got to add to your list of must-reads.

It's a haze of a mystery and when clears up a bit, maybe you'll figure out what is up and for sure enjoy the thrill. Just when you think that's it, the author's gonna prove you wrong.

Corby just so happen to be a childhood friend of Superintendent John Dickson, which is who requested her specifically due to the fact that she is the force's best detective. However, as she dives into this case she begins to wonder if she was made lead detective of this case, because she is the best or is there another, more sinister reason for why she was specifically selected for this case.


- MY REVIEW-
This novel was my first crime fiction novel. and I was not disappointed by this one! This was a novel stuffed full of twists and turns with every page and I could not get enough. I continuously found myself absorbed in the plot and its amazing characters. I would highly recommend this read to all of my other crime fiction lovers!

This was a brilliant read. Throughly enjoyed it. I was totally engaged from the first page and loved how it was written and how the story played out. It certainly grabbed me and kept me engaged all the way through.
