Description

A killer running rings around the police. A detective spiralling out of control.

DI Kate Young is on leave. She’s the force’s best detective, but her bosses know she’s under pressure, on medication and overcoming trauma. So after her bad judgement call leads to a narrowly averted public disaster, they’re sure all she needs is a rest.

But when Staffordshire Police summon her back to work on a murder case, it’s a harder, more suspicious Kate Young who returns. With a new ruthlessness, she sets about tracking down a clinical, calculating serial killer who is torturing victims and leaving clues to taunt the police. DI Kate Young experienced unspeakable horror on the job which led to severe trauma. After months on leave after the difficult incident, Kate was asked by one of her bosses to return to work. She is their best detective and there is a case that he feels only she can handle. Despite still dealing with the effects of the trauma which forced her to go on leave, including severe anxiety attacks and nightmares, adding to the fact that Kate is still on medication, she agrees. The pressure is certainly on. Even though experiencing major symptoms of PTSD, Kate made the decision on the spot.

Ever the consummate professional, Kate soldiers on in what proves to be a very difficult case, that of being on the trail for a vicious serial killer. Not only are bodies dropping, the the killer is leaving clues, clues that are teasing the police. What is more is that Kate begins to see a pattern that things aren't quite the way they should be in another respect. Encouraged the entire way through by her husband Chris, Kate works hard to discover answers. Kate finds that the lies and secrets along the way that prove that the murderer is closer that she could have ever thought.

Kate and her handpicked team of DS Emma Donaldson and DS Morgan Meredith interview a long list of suspects and use whatever means that are available to them to stop the killer before another victim is brutally murdered. Meanwhile, Kate's suspicions begin to grow in a new direction all while she is striving to keep evidence of her anxiety from everyone working around her.

As a stalwart fan of Carol Wyer's writing and having read both her Robyn Carter and Natalie Ward series, it is exciting to meet another character in the first of what most certainly will be another exciting series. I love the fact that Kate has the issues she has yet proves more than adept at her job, thus making her completely relatable. I also enjoyed meeting her team members as well as they worked along with Kate.

One thing that makes a story work for me is character development. The way Kate was written was marvelous and I also loved the supporting characters in this book. To add to this a strong plot with convincing conflicts and this book hit it out of the park. I really loved this book and the twists and turns that kept coming at me. including well-placed red herrings. Then considering the fact that my heart was in my throat more than once, this book captured my attention, and while trying to keep my tears at bay, I powered through this fabulous book.

Lastly, I will mention how invested I was in the Natalie Ward series so for Ms. Wyer to develop a new character was a very nice change. It truly was a chance well played. I am certain that fans of her previous series and standalone novels will feel as I do. The fact that she could weave this wonderful first book in a new series makes me more pleased than words can say. I cannot wait to see more of Kate and hope that she gets stronger and stronger as time goes on.

Many thanks to Amazon Publishing UK and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

When this author announces there is a new book coming out, I get excited. When she announces it is the start of a new series, I can barely contain myself! I have read every crime book which this author has written, and all the series are guaranteed to pack a punch every single time!

Our new female lead is Detective Inspector Kate Young. Right from the first page, it’s obvious that she is a tormented woman, and something troubling had happened in her recent past. We aren’t told what this is initially, but we are drip-fed little flashbacks as Kate’s story progresses, which leaves us in no doubt that Kate has been witness to an unspeakable horror and has since been on leave from her job. Being the best detective in the force she is asked to return to work by her Chief Superintendent, John Dickson to help solve the murder of a prominent businessman. Is she ready for the pressures of a high-profile case?

The book was fantastic! To be honest, I had no doubt it wouldn’t be, but I was totally unprepared for just how good it actually was! I loved Kate Young’s character. She begins nervous, edgy and unsure of herself, but despite all the flashbacks and memory triggers she gets back into the swing of her role and begins to show us why she’s considered to be the best in the force! I found myself asking though, through the first half of the book, so many questions about Kate – why is she taking pills? are they really doing her any good? are her team really on her side? and what happened to her so that she’s ended up like she is now? Of course, good things come to those that wait, and all these questions (and more!!) are answered as the book moves on!

The writing was wonderfully descriptive, adding to the tension which is running through every page. I loved how she described her husband Chris and how she ‘loved the very bones of him’, showing how devoted she was to him. But then, seeing how she was obviously a shadow of her former self due to whatever had happened saddened me terribly. Back at work, Kate is tenacious, gritty and determined to get to the truth. When the body count begins to rise, Kate and her team work well together to find a link between the victims, despite her team appearing to show some mistrust in Kate’s abilities. Her two handpicked team members, DS Emma Donaldson and DS Morgan Meredith are interesting characters and I look forward to seeing how they continue to all work as a team.

There is only so much more I can say about how the storyline pans out for fear of giving away any spoilers. The ‘killer’ storyline is fast paced, twisted and keeps you on your toes trying to work out who it may be. There are lots of suspects thrown into the mix, and by the half way point I had a list as long as my arm of who I thought it could be! Of course, this author is far to clever with her writing to give anything away too early into the book, and you are left waiting for when she feels it’s the right time to give you a bit more! There were points in the book where bits of the story slot into place, and I have to admit to giving a silent little cheer every now and then, confirming I’d worked it out right, or a small groan because I’d got it wrong!

The cover of the book portrays perfectly the dark and tense nature of the book. The plot is upsetting at times, but dealt with sensitively. It is heart-breaking and heart-stopping in equal measures, sometimes both together! Emotionally charged and suspense filled, this book ensured that once I’d started it, I wouldn’t be able to put it down until I’d finished. There are only a handful of crime authors whose books leave me feeling this way – Carol Wyer is one of them! A fantastic start to a series with an unbelievably amazing leading character, I am left on tenterhooks now while I wait for the next book in the series to carry on Kate Young’s story. Fab, fab, fab, fab, fab!!

The trouble with giving star ratings is there is always the odd book that is so much better than others you have already given the top rating to. This is a definite 6 out of 5
The start of a new series, the introduction of DI Kate Young who is suffering from serious PTSD having responded to a horrific shooting in a train carriage
She’s been off work for months but now there’s a sensitive murder that her bosses want investigating. But is she being set up to fail, and if so by who and why
This story has an emotional strand that sneaks up on you until the sudden realisation of the truth hits you.
Without it it would be a great story but with it, it gets elevated to one of those books that will live with you for a long time
I really hope this turns into a long series. I can’t wait to see where Young goes from here.

After reading her DI Natalie Ward series, I didn’t think Carol Wyer could surpass herself but with her new heroine DI Kate Young she has reached new heights. For lovers of British detective thrillers this is a must read but it is certainly not for the squeamish. The story line is both clever and intricate, with new threads being woven in as the book progresses. You think you’ve solved it and another twist. One of Carol’s many skills is writing a story within a story and bringing her main characters to life. In this book, aside from finding out who is responsible for the gruesome murders and why, you have the story of Kate. From the beginning you realise that Kate Young has been damaged by a trauma from her past and you are willing her to overcome her demons and succeed. By the end it is as important to find out what happens to Kate as it is to find the killer. And what an ending. It certainly left me wanting more and desperate to read book two in what I hope will be a long series involving Carol’s new heroine. I can’t wait for the next instalment in her life.

I feel so incredibly lucky to have read an advance copy. This book is amazing.
The author has grown so much and this is just the best. It totally caught me out!!
Full review at publication where I'll be shouting from the rooftops about it.

Carol Wyer is getting good at writing these thrillers .... An Eye For An Eye is a brilliant blend of just the right amount of drama mixed with the whodunnit /psychopathic angle. The characters are utterly believable - DI Kate Young is brilliant at her job but could her recent trauma cloud her intuition; her supportive colleagues; her bosses, the victims; the suspects. The crimes - detailed and gory and yet intriguing. The suspects - each one had murder possibilities, each alibi was plausible, each had a case for and against. How the case unravelled was very clever, I did not guess the murderer until the very end. Highly recommended. I loved it.

Carol Wyer has done it again!! I love her books and this one does not disappoint.

This is the first in the DI Kate Young series.

Kate is off work and on medication when she’s called back to help solve a murder. It’s tough but Kate is determined to solve the crime.

The book has a whole web of twists and turns and keeps you guessing throughout. It’s quite a complex story but one that is fast paced and easy to follow, You keep you wanting to turn the pages to see what’s coming next.

Carol is a clever writer who knows how to keep us gripped.

Brilliant I cannot wait to read more about DI Kate Young.

Unless you have lived under a rock for the last five years, you'll know how much I love Carol Wyer's previous series featuring Robyn Carter and Natalie Ward. An Eye For An Eye is the beginning of a new series with Detective Inspector Kate Young, and to be honest, it's totally on another level. Kate is a very complex character and I loved getting to know her. It's difficult to say much more than that without giving away spoilers, but there are definitely plenty of places that Wyer could go with her development and I'm excited to see what she decides, as Kate is one of those characters I could root for whatever happens. Kate works alongside fellow officers, Morgan and Emma, both of whom I found very likeable and I'm very interested to read more of their personal story as the series continues.

The plot of An Eye For An Eye is complex, and Wyer weaves lots of threads together to make sure it works. It is meticulously planned and I admire the patience this must have taken! I can genuinely say I had absolutely no idea where the investigation was going until the final few chapters, but I was engaged and intrigued from beginning to end. There are several unusual aspects to this case, but I enjoyed learning about objects and ideas I'd never come across before. The twists in An Eye For An Eye are literally jaw dropping, but I'll say no more for fear of spoilers.

An Eye For An Eye ends on a huge cliffhanger, and Wyer is, quite frankly, cruel for making us wait so long for the next one. I want to read it now!

I enjoyed meeting the characters in Carol Wyer's new series. They were well-rounded, some were flawed (and some of those more than others).

It took some time to really get into the book, but once I did, I was loath to put it down.

I'm looking forward to more in this series.

Another first class, edge of your seat, thrilling read from this very talented author. A fantastic start to a new series.
DI Kate Young has been on leave after some sort of traumatic experience. You get to learn about this as the book progresses. Invited back to work Kate is very unsure if she is read for this or even capable. She agrees to go back and start out with a very small team. just three of them, so Along with Kate she has DS Emma Donaldson on DS Morgan Meredith. The team are faced with a murder case. A well known businessman has been murdered and Kate is now the lead on the case.
As this book starts with you knowing something has happened to Kate, you are slowly drip fed information on what happened with her. Kate seems to grow in confidence as we go through the book and you know she is going to be a formidable character as this series grows.
A first class fast paced read that will grab you early on and keep hold of you. This author has the ability to surprise with each and every book she writes. An exceptional writer who scares me sometimes with the ideas she comes up with for a story. lol

You've done it again, BRAVO!

I have read and loved every one of Carol Wyer's crime series and I didn't think I could be any more shocked after what happened to DI Natalie Ward. However this is the first of the DI Kate Young series and it started with not just one bang but multiple bangs which shook me to the core.

Kate is a fantastic detective and we meet her as she is trying to solve an unusual but horrendous murder. The trouble is she can't quite concentrate on it because she is suffering from PTSD (Well that's my diagnosis anyway). As usual, with Carol's books I always feel as though I'm part of the investigation and love trying to fit the pieces of the puzzle together. Quite often I also find that I have empathy with the killer and whilst I think they were very wrong to do what they did, the reason why they did it was heart-breaking too.

The author has certainly not shied away from some of the horrific things that go on in this world and has represented them in the book. She has also dealt with the shocking blow that devastated me in a really clever way. I think I can already tell that this is going to be the best series and that's saying alot because I've loved the others.

This book is shocking in many ways but I really don't want to give anything away so I'll leave that there. Suffice to say you will have a major adrenaline hit whilst reading it as the true awfulness unfolds.

I'm already intrigued by Kate's back story with her step sister and am looking forward to seeing a huge helping of revenge on certain people which I'm sure we'll discover as the series progresses.

An Eye For An Eye is gritty, raw and painful and will certainly keep you up at night.

Well Hello, Kate!!! It must always be a bit daunting for an author who introduces a new character into their fold, especially when they already have established characters. Here it is no different, Carol has Robyn and Natalie, so I was nervous to see how Kate would fit. It took me a few chapters to get into the flow of the book, this is because in a way I felt like I might be betraying Robyn and Natalie so a small part of me maybe didn’t want to like the book. However, when it clicked, it clicked, and there is more than enough room for Kate Young in this world. (Plus I loved the book)

Robyn and Natalie are two powerhouse women, they both suffer some big losses, they are conflicted, tenacious but loyal so how would Kate fair up? Well, she slotted in as if she has always been there. Her story, well I won’t talk about her story but you can see throughout how it affects her, it bleeds into her work life. The constant worry of the case with the blurring of lines is a huge factor throughout this book. We have a new team to meet and they have Kate’s back even when you feel like they might not.

We have a whole bunch of new characters to be wary of, no one to hate just yet but we do have a dodgy wotsit that I will be keeping my eye on! But I can sense when the fallout comes it will be a HUGE explosion. I don’t think anyone will be safe and it is quite an exciting thread to carry on in the series. Although, exciting might not be the right word considering how dark this thread is!! Yup, Carol is back darker than before! More ruthless and she makes sure she makes your heart crack a little.

I didn’t play detective, I watched the story, the sad tale (they are always sad) and the reasoning behind it all. However, I love that this story is not wrapped up all neatly there are a few loose threads floundering, ready to take us on to the next phase of the story. One thing to love is when the book title makes sense, here An Eye for An Eye makes perfect sense and it adds to yet another layer to this tale. When everything, and I mean everything, clicks in to place it is an eye-watering OMG moment! One that will make your heart falter as you second-guess what you have read. I had suspicions all along and I really did not want them to be true, the lump in my throat was huge!

You can not help but love Kate. You feel her pain and you can see easily why she loves her bubble and wants to stay there. I bet so many of us would want to do the same!!

So many more words I want to say, but I can’t. But please do take the chance on Kate, you won’t regret it!

Wow, what a brilliant start to a new series. Having been a fan of Carol Wyer’s previous crime novels, I was really looking forward to seeing what she would come up with in, An Eye For An Eye. This is the first novel to feature DI Kate Young, and I can’t wait to see what Carol has install for Kate and the series next.

When we first meet Kate, she is just returning to work having recently gone through a traumatic event. Thoughts about that day still plague her mind, but she is determined to get back to work. And she is thrown headfirst into a gruesome new case. The body of a man, a wealthy businessman, who has also been tortured, has been found by his secretary. The part I found the most gruesome about this case was that the victim’s eye had been removed. This shows that whoever is carrying out the murders is doing this for revenge. This also becomes quickly apparent to Kate and her team.

There were so many intriguing characters and potential suspects in this book. It’s certainly fair to say that the first man to end up dead could have attracted a lot of enemies. Soon Kate finds herself in a race against time as more people are killed. But what is the motive here? When Kate finds a connection between the men who have been targeted, she uncovers an unnerving, dark secret. I really wanted to get to the bottom of what was happening here, and I was invested in the plot.

I really felt for Kate as I was reading this book. I could feel her grief as she attempted to come to terms with what has happened in her recent history. She is trying to push on with things, but she is struggling, and there are some heartbreaking scenes, which I think will make readers really connect with Kate.

Carol Wyer tells a devastating story here. It makes you feel for all of those who are involved, especially the people who are left behind. There is a very powerful scene right towards the end of the book, which even makes Kate stop and think, and I thought it was very well done.

An Eye For An Eye is very well plotted, and the different avenues which Carol explored hid the real motives and the killer really well. Some of the twists which came towards the end of the book knocked me for six.

I was gripped right the way through, and I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. DI Kate Young is a character who, I am sure, will become a firm favourite of mine in the crime fiction genre. If you’re a fan of Carol’s books, then you are in for a treat. I can’t wait to read more!

She’s done it again! When one of my favourite crime writers announced a new series I couldn’t contain my excitement and I was thrilled to be one of the lucky people who first received a copy. Expectations were high and, as always, Ms. Wyer did not disappoint. An Eye for an Eye is a gripping, twisty, pacy and gritty thriller that had me hooked from the start. I couldn’t put it down and was up until 5am the first night as I didn’t want to stop reading!

Detective Kate Young is off work after a traumatic incident earlier in the year that led to PTSD. She is still struggling to get through each day when one of her bosses asks her to come back to work on a sensitive case. She isn’t sure she’s ready to go back, but her boss convinces her that he needs his best detective, so she returns.

Supported by her husband, Chris, and her handpicked team, Kate finds returning even more difficult than she imagined. But she’s determined to crack the case, particularly after finding clues that seem to point to the killer being uncomfortably close to home.

This book has everything you expect when you pick up a Carol Wyer book: great writing that is gritty and compelling, grizzly murders, a layered plot full of shocking twists, and interesting characters.

Once again Carol has created a protagonist who is a feisty, flawed and strong-willed woman with an interesting backstory. When we meet Kate she’s on leave from work and struggling with PTSD after a traumatic incident earlier in the year. She is suffering from flashbacks, nightmares and disassociation and using pills to try and cope with her feelings. When she returns to work she must battle against not only her symptoms but the doubts and insecurities of herself and those around her. Everyone is watching and some are counting on her to fail, but Kate is determined to overcome her challenges to bring a killer to justice. As someone with PTSD following trauma I appreciate Carol portraying the condition in such a raw and accurate way. Despite these things I will admit it took me a little while to warm to Kate, though I found her compelling and was rooting for her from start to finish.

As much as I love her Natalie Ward books I am glad that Carol decided to write a new series as I loved this thrilling page-turner. And, after that ending, I can’t wait for book two!

So if you’re a crime fiction fan, don’t miss the first in what I believe will be another unmissible series from the incomparable Ms. Wyer. READ THIS NOW.

DI Kate Young is on a much needed break from work after an error in judgement led to an unfortunate outcome. Still, the powers that be know that Kate is the best detective around and when a serial killer begins taunting the police, they decide to bring her back to work. She comes back, wiser, tougher and ready to take down anyone who crosses her. When her investigation leads her to someone much closer than she could have imagined, Kate has to determine if she’s correct, or if the whole thing is some sort of delusion. This is an excellent police procedural with a troubled, realistic protagonist

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to the next in the series. Read in two sittings.
Thanks to NetGalley and the author for the opportunity to read this exciting book.

An Eye for an Eye is the first book in a new series by author Carol Wyer. Her Robin Carter's story ended, thus DI Kate Young story begins.

At the beginning of the book, Kate Young is on compassionate leave after having witnessed a PTSD inducing event : A shooter rampage on a train, then demonstrated she couldn't keep working without healing first. We get bit after bit of the train shooting story through Kate Young's flashbacks, when she doesn't take her meds on time. She does use them a lot, tho, sometimes complementing them with wine, in spite of her husband Chris' support.

When a public figure falls victims to a pretty weird act of torture and murder, the Superintendent specifically asks for Kate Young to lead the case with a small team of coppers she trusts : Emma and Morgan, a pair whose interactions through the book will bring out laughs, but sometimes also raise eyebrows.

We also meet the highly regarded head of forensics, Erwin and Faith, a new intern from Africa who did everything in her power to end up in Erwin's lab

So much insistence for Kate to take the case makes her paranoid. Why if the superintendent and the DSI, in spite of being an old family friend, were hoping for her to fail ? And if so, to achieve what ? Her husband isn't helping, buying into the conspiracy theory himself. In any case, Kate is set on avoiding any traps, and proving her worth to get back on the force.

When a grueling scene precedes the murder of another public figure, and a link is found between the two victims and some other people, Kate's paranoia cranks up to eleven. Threats to give the investigation to another detective doesn't help, and Kate is determined to uncover the whole truth herself, even if some powerful people might not want her to.

Or, that's the story we're given as seen by the main protagonist, DI Kate Young. Even if the book is written in the third person, she's the one we're following. She suffers from PTSD after a highly traumatic event. She pops anxiolytics as Max Payne pops painkillers. She has frequent flashbacks and losses of time. She is highly paranoid. Is she really a reliable narrator ?...

That's one of the strenghts of this book. Damaged characters are nothing new. But, a character so damaged her vision of reality might be altered, bringing the reader into the rabbit's hole with her ? That's less common.

Carol Wyer did her research on this kind of mental problems, interviewing afflicted people, and she manages to give the reader a pretty good idea of how they can affect someone like DI Kate Young.

The writing is on par with Carol Wyer's other books. The story is quick paced, but she doesn't forget to give us a good view of the locales. The supporting cast of characters is really fleshed out and, we end up wanting to read more about them all.

You can try and guess the killer and the motive. There are some red herrings here and there but, if you're a seasoned detective, you can guess them a little before they're properly revealed in the final batch of pages.

I can't wait to read more about DI Kate Young, and see how she manages her next assignments, in spite of her mental health problems.

Thanks to Thomas Mercer, Amazon Publishing UK, Carol Wyer herself, and Netgalley for the ARC provided in exchange for this unbiased review.

Really good thriller and first book to start a series with.

It gave me many feelings of Midsummer Murders and the suspense was on with each page turned .

Probably the most interesting thing that I enjoyed was that the author managed to keep me invested throughout the book and the secret life that many of the characters/suspects were undergoing was a twist that I haven’t predicted.

A must read story.

Totally gripping read.
British police procedural crime fiction.
Book one, detective Kate Young, superintendent John Dickson wants her to take excended leave he's worried about her. Chris is her soul mate and wants her to lay off the pills, the nightmares her mental health is not getting any better after what she has been through, is she ready to go back to work, DS William Chase needs her back on the team. that kicks off with the murder of Alex Corby of Corby's international a big firm owning huge warehouses, a gruesome DIY death the killer is either a chef or got OCD. as we go into the book its is so very dark, I couldn't fault it. it will chill you all over as you read chapter after chapter

Thank you Netgalley and Amazon Publishing UK for the eARC.
This was my first Carol Wyer book and certainly not my last; I just ordered another one.
DI Kate Young is suffering from extreme PTSD, with flashbacks and panic attacks. She is called back from a three-month leave to head a small team investigating a gruesome killing. Despite having hallucinations of the horrific mass shooting that sidelined her, she's determined to solve the case.
It was hard for me to put the book down, it is so intense and riveting - I had to remind myself to breathe. Kate is an interesting character, fighting to keep herself together and do her job as best she can. Can't wait for no. 2 in the series, out later this year. Highly recommended!

What a great start to a new series! DI Kate Young is recovering from a traumatic experience on the job when she's called back from leave to head a small team of two on a local murder case. It turns out that the victim was friends with her Superintendent and he specifically wanted her as the detective in charge. She has some trouble readjusting, as she still experiences flashbacks and relies on medication to get by. But she's determined to work as hard as she needs to so that no one doubts her expertise.

But as hard as she works, she can't help noticing that everyone is surprised that she's back on the job already. Thank goodness for her husband Chris's words of encouragement - he has always told her to listen to her gut and follow the evidence, no matter who it leads to. And there are plenty of people under suspicion on this one who believe they are above the law. As more victims are discovered, it becomes clear that they are connected - if Kate and her team could just put those last few pieces together, they could discover who is at the heart of these ruthless killings. But how is she supposed to do that with only two other detectives assigned to her? If the Superintendent wants this case resolved as soon as possible, why isn't she given more assistance to do so? It's almost like she's being set up to fail...

Not only is this an intriguing mystery, but it's a heartbreaking story, as well. I didn't expect to be brought to tears in the middle of a page-turning thriller, that's for sure. So be ready for an emotional roller coaster and hang on tight, because it's one heck of a ride to the end!

I have been a fan of Carol’s work for a while now. I haven’t quite caught up with everything that she has written to date but I am slowly getting there. I read the synopsis for ‘An Eye For An Eye’ and it certainly sounded like the brilliant action packed, crime thriller that I have to expect from Carol. I absolutely loved reading ‘An Eye For An Eye’ but more about that in a bit.
I loved the character of Detective Inspector Kate Young and I warmed to her from the start. In fact I began to think of her as a friend and I started to feel all protective of her. When we first meet her, we discover that she was on sick leave from the force for reasons which soon become apparent. A new case leads to Kate returning to work after her input is requested. I did wonder about the motives behind her return to work, but I won’t go any further into them as I would hate to give too much away. All I can say is underestimate Kate at your peril. She soon gets back into the swing of things and she soon makes headway into the investigation.
I was hooked on this book from the moment I glimpsed the name ‘Carol Wyer’ on the book page on Amazon. To say that Carol’s books prove to be addictive reading is a huge understatement. As soon as I managed to get hold of a copy of the book, I squirrelled myself away until I had read every single word of the story. For me, ‘An Eye For An Eye’ is the definition of an unputdownable page turner of a read. I couldn’t bear to tear my attention away from the book even for just a nano second. I think I feared missing out on a clue or a vital nugget of information. All too quickly I reached the end of ‘An Eye For An Eye’ and I had to bid farewell to Kate and her little team. It’s only a temporary farewell because the second book in the DI Kate Young series is called ‘A Cut For A Cut’ and it is due for release on 24th June 2021. I can’t flipping wait and I have already pre-ordered it.
‘An Eye For An Eye’ is blooming brilliantly written but then I have come to expect nothing less from Carol Wyer. She certainly knows how to start the story with a bang and what follows proves to be a very tense and dramatic investigation with more twists and turns to it than you would know what to do with. Reading ‘An Eye For An Eye’ felt like being on one hell of a scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with no idea of which direction the story was going to go in. For me, the story started with a bang and maintained a fast pace throughout. I found this to be a gripping read, which had me on the edge of my seat throughout and kept my attention from start to finish.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘An Eye For An Eye’ and I would definitely recommend this superb book to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Carol’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.

I have previously read and enjoyed the Detective Natalie Ward series by this author, appreciating a competent protagonist whose personal life was sometimes difficult but which she managed to keep from affecting her work. This novel in contrast portrayed a police officer who somehow managed to solve her case while suffering from appalling mental health problems and an addiction to some sort of prescribed medication.

The plot moved along briskly, but included distressing scenes of violence, and the plot was a little unoriginal if you read as much detective fiction as I do. I worked out who the murderer was early on by the time honoured method of wondering why on earth this character had been included in the story. Finally, I think the author uses the word microscopic to mean small, whereas I have always assumed it meant 'only visible with the aid of a microscope', and this caused me confusion early on.

“Mythomania- Compulsive lying disorder”
Can you trust everyone you know?
DI Kate Young is recovering following traumatic events when she is pulled into a case involving high profile and gruesome murders. As the case unfolds, she begins to realise not all is as it seems and a race against the clock ensues to catch the killer before any more lives are lost!
I really enjoyed this book and felt that the writer gave a good background history of the main character to compliment the story. Fast paced and full of twists. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.

Carol Wyer has come up with yet another fabulous series in An Eye for An Eye featuring Detective Kate Young.

Kate is dealing with some personal trauma but comes back to work and is put on the case of a murdered millionaire.

Alex is the not the only victim to be tortured and left dead .

Kate and her team of only three are scrambling to solve the case as Kate's superiors watch her closely.

I loved Kate, she starts out shaky but she fights back and you can't help but cheer her on.

Carol Wyer always leaves wanting more at the end of the story and this book is no exception.

I look forward to reading the next book in the Kate Young series and watch her grow as a character.

Thanks to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing UK, Thomas &38- Mercer for bringing us an exciting new series to which I will be first in line to purchase book 2.

I’d like to thank Amazon Publishing UK and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘An Eye For An Eye’ by Carol Wyer in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

DI Kate Young is brought back from stress-related sick leave when two men are murdered in an identical manner, wealthy businessman Alex Corby and an acquaintance of his Ian Wentworth. Kate is positive that if only she can find what links the two men she’ll be able to discover the identity of their killer, but first she has to work out what that link is, especially as she doesn’t know who she can trust.

‘An Eye For An Eye’ is the first in an exciting new series featuring DI Kate Young and her dedicated team of DS Morgan Meredith and Emma Donaldson. It’s been cleverly written with a complex plot that I found confusing at first, with lots of drama, suspense and twists and turns, the most massive and shocking twist coming three-quarters of the way through the story that explained Kate’s actions making them clear and understandable. I like Kate’s character as she’s tenacious, determined and fair to her colleagues, and I’m looking forward to how she develops in the second of the series. I’ve enjoyed reading this thriller which I can wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who loves an exciting, addictive and action-packed thriller.

The prolific Carol Wyer returns with An Eye for an Eye which is the first book in a new series starring DI Kate Young and based on the story I have read this is going to be another winner.

Young is recovering from a work trauma that is revealed throughout the book whilst thrown into a complex and difficult murder investigation upon her return to work.

The story moves along at a good pace and keeps the pages turning as the twists and turns keep coming at you the reader.

Definitely recommended and I look forward to book number two.

An Eye For An Eye is the first in the DI Kate Young series and having read a couple of Carol's other books, I was intrigued to see how Kate measured up to the other detectives.

Kate is a damaged woman. Taking pills to hide from her pain but the trauma still manages to manifest itself with flashbacks that plague her day-to-day life. I really rooted for her through the story, hoping that she'd pull through and catch the bad guy.

As someone who reads a lot of crime fiction, it's difficult to surprise me, but the killing method in this book certainly did! I'm not going to give it away, don't worry, but it is one of the most clever and vindictive that I've come across in a while.

There were a few aspects of the story that weren't a huge shocker for me, but I still enjoyed watching things unfold in front of me.

I think this novel sets up the series nicely, and I think it will only get stronger as the series goes along.

An Eye For An Eye is a dark and intense police procedural with plenty of intriguing new characters to get to know.

An Eye for an Eye is a new book and a new character from Carol Wyer.

"DI Kate Young is on leave after assisting on a horrific mass shooting. But after the discovery of a gruesome murder, DI Young is called back to track down a killer. With her small team, Kate uncovers secrets and lies and must push through all of the barriers her team faces. And after another gruesome murder, the pressure is on to catch the killer..."

This is a police procedural with a DI that's dealing with a personal tragedy. The reader figures out pretty quickly what's going on with Kate, but she doesn't know. Kate and team move from lead to lead. There are lots of clues and you'll probably guess the killer and why (especially if you read a lot of crime fiction) but Wyer makes it an wild journey to get there. One thing to keep in mind about many of the characters in this book - "Everybody lies!"

There's a bit of set-up for the next book. Looking forward to seeing where Wyer takes this new character. Fans of crime fiction should definitely check out An Eye for an Eye.

I didn’t think I would enjoy this as how could any detective live up to Natalie Ward or Robyn Carter? The author had surpassed herself with the writing of these two characters; how could any new one live up to such high standards?
She does!
At first, I thought there were too many similarities between Kate and Robyn. She has a tragic past and often imagines her partner’s advice. However, as the book progresses, you realise there is something more similar about the two, but at the same time, they couldn’t be further apart. I guessed the main character’s twist at about 30% of the way into the book, but I think by ‘knowing’ it made it more interesting to see if I was right with my guess.
The small tidbits given about the train massacre are real teasers, just when you think you are getting more detail that slight reminiscence is snatched away and you are left wanting more. At first, I couldn’t understand why this one event had such a profound impact on Kate's life. However, as the details emerge, I felt like crying for her. It was beautifully accomplished and written that you really feel for the character after not long knowing her!
The investigation that Kate is involved in was just utterly brilliant. It was so horrific and detailed that it made me start questioning the author’s mentality once again. This is precisely the kind of gruesome horror you want from a crime book. It was just perfect. It was all very intricately woven together as well, even though I did guess who the killer was, I didn’t know why and it was still great being along for the ride.
About 60% of the way into the book, it really picks up speed, and I just couldn’t put it down, I needed to know how everything would unfold and what answers we would get. There is certainly a set up for future books, and a bigger story that I can see is going to be interwoven into the series. I am really looking forward to what else Kate Young has to offer. Despite my reservations, she has overtaken Robyn Carter in my favourite characters of Carol Wyer’s books (Natalie Ward is still at the top, but I think that is all down to ‘The Blossom Twins’, can anything ever top that?!?)
A five star read without a doubt!

An Eye For An Eye by Carole Wyer is a new series with DI Kate Young. A story that definitely got my heart pumping and my mind working overtime, and this is just the beginning!
Kate's life used to be pretty good. She had sucessfully followed in her late father's footsteps, become a diligent, experienced police officer, trusted by her peers, and her husband was the best thing which had ever happened to her. Then she attended a callout that took her to the brink and we meet her now on medication but back in work due to another high profile murder case and her presence being requested by her bosses with instructions to get the job done quickly and quietly as possible.
The murderer doesn't stop at one victim and soon the clues begin to point in the direction of people that she trusts. The question is, can she find the strength to catch this killer or is she too damaged from the past?
The story is told in present day with us being drip fed the horrific callout that caused Kate so much trauma that it still affects her to this day.
Carole Wyer knows how to spin an excellent story and this new series is no different at all. The reader is kept guessing about the killer until the end, always the best bit if you can't guess who it is so it's a surprise. I am so excited for the next book and what Kate gets up too.
Thanks to Damp Pebbles Blog tours, NetGalley and Carole Wyer for the copy of the book for my review today.

Wow. I think this is a great and promising start to a new series. I loved reading this book and couldn’t help but empathise with and root for Kate, the main character. Following a personal trauma she returns to work to investigate a murder, not knowing who she can trust and her team doubting her ability to lead them. Kate is flawed, troubled, tenacious and strong willed. And determined to find the murderer. I thought this was a fast paced, well written and thrilling read that takes place over a short period of time. I loved the author’s writing style here and guessed the murderer correctly although I didn’t know why. All was revealed towards the end and I look forward to the next book.

An Eye for an Eye is a crime / mystery novel that follows DI Kate Young as she tracks down a killer. Kate has been on leave and is called back to the force to try and solve the murder, that soon turns into hunting a serial killer. Along with her journalist husband she begins to think all is not as it seems with the case.

An Eye for an Eye is a great mystery book. Full of twists and turns and leaves you trying to guess what is happening all the way through. It is really well written and an enjoyable read. The characters are well developed and I really connected with Kate throughout the story.
Whilst one part of the mystery I had guessed early on it didn't distract from the story and I didn't guess who the serial killer could be until the "big" hint was revealed.
A very easy four stars and I'll be looking out for the next in the series.

An Eye for an Eye follows DI Kate Young on her first investigation back after a traumatic event where several members of the public were gunned down on a train. Clearly suffering from PTSD flashbacks, and heavily medicating on pills, her superior tells her to come back and work an investigation where a well-known public figure has been murdered. The story unfolds with more murders, secrets and a plot twist that was very shocking.

I have not read Wyer's work before but thoroughly enjoyed this - it kept me glued to the page throughout. Half way through the book I did think I had cracked the case but was proved wrong towards the end. The characters were likeable and I look forward to following them on more journey's and investigations.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read, and one I would recommend to any thriller lover like myself. Thanks to NetGalley for the copy!

An Eye for an Eye is book #1 in the newest series by Carol Wyer. In this series Ms Wyer gives us DI Kate Young who had been off of work for a few months due to trauma. When Ms Young returns to work she feels she must prove herself ready and feels somewhat paranoid that others are expecting her to fail. I want to thank NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer, and Amazon UK for a copy to review.

Wow what a fabulous start to a new series! This story had me riveted to the page, in particular the second half of the book which was full of action, tension and twists. I read it in one sitting as I had a really hard time putting it down. This is Carol Wyer at her best it was bloody brilliant and totally deserves five stars.

Having enjoyed previous series by this excellent writer, I was looking forward to this new strand and what a start! It features DI Kate Young, a very troubled cop following her involvement in a particularly shocking crime and only just returning to work. The case assigned to her is fascinating and she is tasked with working out what links a series of victims and trying to prevent future atrocities. An engrossing start to this series and I look forward eagerly to number 2.

What a cliff hanger... I’ve literally just finished this book and gasped so so loud! I’ve just started Carol Wyers other series of books so was pleased to try the first one of a new series!

A great story line. I enjoyed Kate and her back story and the other people working with her! I guessed the culprit at 83% but really wasn’t expecting the cliff hanger.... roll on book two... I can’t wait!!!!!!!

This book is everything you look for in a murder mystery. It is full of intrigue and multiple twists and weaves several events into one story. The main character Kate is multifaceted and extremely likeable. The author did a wonderful job of creating her and I felt deeply for Kate. Kate is a DI with the British police and is off on mental leave when she is asked to come back and work on the murder of a rich businessman. She is struggling to cope with life while trying to her job and she feels that she is being tested by her superiors and that they are holding back on her. What ensues is a lot of investigation with only two others on her team. As the case builds we learn more about why Kate was off on leave and it only made me feel for her more. I like the supporting characters and the author created a cast that seemed believable and realistic.

I love a police book and this is one of the best I have read in a while. I did figure out some of the story but it didn’t detract from the book and in fact it made me want to read even quicker to see if I was right. While the case was solved the book ended in a manner that allows for more books to follow featuring Kate. I can’t wait to read them.

Thank you to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing UK for the opportunity to read this book.

Another brilliant book from Carol
The start of a new detective series.
D.I. Kate Young has suffered a traumatic incident and is on leave.
While on leave her friend and fellow officer D.C.I Chase comes and asks Kate to come back as this case is a bad one and the superintendent wants Kate on this case.
While trying to solve the case we are taken back to why Kate is on leave.
There is definitely quite a few twists in this story.
Is everyone on her side or not?
Can’t wait for the next book
Thanks NetGalley

An Eye for and Eye -. A Detective trying to solve a case with a murderer running rings around everyone, while battling her own issues made for a great read. I must admit, I did cotton on to one twist pretty early on,, which made for predictable reading, however the actual murder itself remained unsolved for me up until the very end. I loved (if that is the right way to describe it!) the murder method, something very left field and not like any I have come across before.

The book was real written and fast moving , with the introduction of many characters to throw the reader off the scent and a great marriage of two story lines. I found Kate to be fabulous, and really doing the best she can with her mental state, something that was sympathetically written, without making her out to be achieving more than someone realistically could in her state. I felt for her, trying to keep her head above water and I found her to be relatable.

I look forward to reading more about Detective Kate and would love to see her developed into a TV show.

As a huge Forensic Files fan, I was curious to see if this one would live up to explain and it did not let me down! The murders were told vividly but not so graphic that you can’t keep reading. Well done!
Kate is an investigator in England who was been called back to duty after some family issues have forced her to take leave. She comes back at the request of the Superintendent of Police, who wants her to work the case, but doesn’t want to work with her or give her any more information than he has to. A serial killer is taking down people one by one and unless Kate can put the past behind her and focus on the case at hand, the killer may go free.
Really enjoyed this! Can’t wait for the next book in the series. Thanks to netgalley, and the author, Carol Wyer for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

This isn’t my first book by this author and I loved her last one so couldn’t resist this one. Great promise in the blurb and I’m a sucker for any police procedural storylines. I also love a strong female character which DI Kate Young is. I also loved the dynamic within the investigative team. I’m fairly good for guessing aspects of a storyline or being able to predict the conclusion but this one was a little different as from a quarter way in I knew what was coming and not in the way of some details but everything. It was such a pity as it really had such potential for the suspense and shock factor but unfortunately it was hard not to predict as it was so obvious. Having said that I continued as I did want to see was I right in my predictions and maybe I was in for a shock. It won’t stop me reading the next in the series as it’s really been left open and has caught my interest but I just hope it won’t be written in the same way. Good read just very predictable.

Thanks to Netgalley and Amazon Publishing UK for the opportunity to read and review this ARC that was published on the 1st of Feb.

An Eye for an Eye is the first book in the Detective Kate Young series. Overall I enjoyed the book. The plot itself was compelling and kept my interest throughout. However, I was able to guess the killer early on in the book, and from reading reviews, others did too. I did have a couple of other issues with the book. I did not feel any chemistry between Detective Kate Young and her team members (which was only two other people). Half the time they couldn't even reach each other on the phone or they were talking about another behind their back. But my biggest gripe was the Chris twist. Yeah I was able to figure it out before the reveal but it sure was confusing in the beginning.

Thank you to NetGalley, Amazon Publishing UK and Carol Wyer for a copy of "An Eye for an Eye" in exchange of an honest review.

I very much enjoyed this book. It has a good story and excellent main characters. I would definately recommend this book.

An interesting premise - a police detective dealing with PTSD while trying to work, but I had too many issues with the book to give it more stars.

The book is supposed to be set in 2021, but the dates don't align. The 2nd of January was not a Tuesday this year and other dates don't work with this year. Also, if it's this year why is there zero mention of Covid?

Kate gets rid of her medication in one scene - she hates her dependency on it, but she has zero withdrawal symptoms and no regrets. Seems unrealistic to me.

But unrealistic is the centerpiece of much of this novel. Two DS who are in their early 20s? Sure it happens, but seems unlikely especially when our DI is also young.

I did get at times get really caught up in the story, but I'd say skip this one. There are others that are far better written and much more realistic.

Full disclosure - the publisher provided me with a free copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This was my first time reading one of Carol Wyer’s books which I found on NetGallery. Let me tell you,
I was not disappointed at all. This story had multiple turns and multiple different leads. It kept me guessing throughout and I loved having different parts and flashbacks in it to make you get a real perspective of Kate, the female police officer. This differs from the other crime and mystery books I’ve read as it followers the detectives point and I absolutely loved it!! I can’t wait to for a follow on book from this. Straight up 5/5!!

This is an excellent thriller by Carol Wyer featuring D.I. Kate Young who is investigating the murder of a tortured man. She has been off work following the killing of many people in a carriage on a train when her husband was shot. This put is one that you cannot put down, and I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who loves a good thriller that keeps you enthralled until the last pages.

I've read and loved both of this author's other series so was slightly disappointed with this offering. Maybe it's simply due to building new characters but I found the plot rather weak and predictable. The husband storyline was obvious from the outset and the constant flashbacks became quite tedious. I hope to see this new series evolve to be as good as the others

I usually love this author's books but I wasn't able to really get into this one. The pacing is slow and the story often felt disjointed. I figured out the stuff with Chris very early in the book. The case was interesting but it didn't hold my attention. The best part of the book was the very end. I would probably give the next one a try just because I like the author.

This book took me far longer to read than it should have and that to me suggests I didn’t enjoy it as much as I should have.

Plot wise, this book started out with great promise. There’s no denying that Wyer is an impressive wordsmith (I found myself using the dictionary function in practically ever chapter!) but it was questionable at times as to whether these impressive words added anything to the narrative or simply over complicated and restricted the natural flow.

There’s a quite a few twists and turns in this book but sadly I found them a bit too obvious. Firstly through the way in which they were set up and secondly because there are the most common in this genre.

I never felt like I truly connected with Kate. So much of her recent history dictates her current personality and choices that she felt a little diluted.

Overall it’s an enjoyable read but nothing groundbreaking or remarkable. I’d certainly try another of this authors books but this one wasn’t my favourite.

Thanks to NetGalley for my advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

DI Kate Young is called back into work even though she is on leave due to a horrible event occurred a few months earlier. Now she has to investigates about a murderer who tortures and kills his victims following a unique pattern.
The victims are all related to each other, but how?
I loved this book! Got me hooked from the beginning and, although I could guess both the killer and the 'husband's thing' quite early, it didn't make the read less enjoyable. The writing is exceptionally good, the plot is very catching, a great read!
The open ending left me eager to read more about DI Young and what is going to happen next and I'll definitely have a look at other Carol Wyer's books in the meantime, since this was my first one.
I need more Carol Wyer in my life!

An apple a day keeps the doctor away...but in this case...not the killer! I will never look at an apple in the same way again.

I am huge fan of Carol's crime novels so when she tweeted that a new detective was in our midst, I kept my eyes peeled for its release...or an ARC. As luck would have it, I purchased it as one of Amazon's First Reads last month but then also got it via Netgalley so as to leave a review there. Carol is one of my favourite writers. She keeps readers on their toes from start to finish...and she's a lot of fun to chat to as well!

When I came to the end of this book last night, two words entered my mind...OMG!! WOW!! And then I tweeted Carol to find out when the follow up was due out so I could continue the journey. AN EYE FOR AN EYE starts off with a bang in more ways than one before petering out to build the bigger picture...which incidentally, doesn't become clear till towards the end. But it still makes for gripping reading that I couldn't put down and read long into the night.

We meet DI Kate Young on the brink after suffering a massively traumatic incident. She is then given enforced leave on compassionate grounds despite wanting to continue to work. A determined, tough but broken woman, Kate is feisty when she needs to be but at the present time is still piecing her life back together. She introduces us to her husband Chris, a journalist, whom she met after a car accident. And it is apparent through their conversations that he is the glue that holds her together when she needs it.

Then just three months after being given leave, Kate's friend and mentor DCI William Chase knocks on her door to tell her that she has been specifically requested to head up a murder investigation by the Superintendent, with a team of her choosing. Accompanied by DS Morgan Meredith and DS Emma Donaldson, Kate and her team are tasked with investigating the murder of prominent businessman Alex Corby, who incidentally happens to be well acquainted with the Super. Leaving no stone unturned, and trusting no one but Chris and her team, Kate sets out to uncover the truth behind the grisly murder.

And then another body is discovered. This time by Kate herself! Ian Wentworth was a eminent ENT surgeon and friend of Alex Corby, and therefore Superintendent John Dickson by default. When he discovered a glass jar containing an eye at his holiday cottage in the Peak District he called the police. But it wasn't until he returned to home to his penthouse back in Staffordshire that he realised its significance...too late.

Enquiries lead Kate to the Maddox Club, an exclusive men's club, where Ian Wentworth and Alex Corby were members. But what secrets does this club hold? Or more importantly, the manager who has been with the club since it began in 2008? Kate is sure he is lying to her but has nothing but her gut instinct to prove it. As both men were known to her Super, she knew she must question him but DCI Chase was keeping him well away from the spotlight. Why is that?

Her trusted team of two, DS' Meredith and Donaldson, were tasked with tracking down a missing witness and searching Wentworth's holiday cottage respectively. But it was what they would find out from the witness and discover at the cottage that would blow everything wide open. But...they had to find a way to tell Kate.

Despite respecting their superior, Morgan and Emma were worried about Kate's mental state. She was often seen mumbling to herself and popping pills on the sly. Was Kate up to seeing this investigation through? And not only that, was she up to facing the truth that it would reveal?

WOW! The thrill ride Carol takes the reader on throughout AN EYE FOR AN EYE is adrenaline-pumping and addictive as you swipe the pages faster and faster in an attempt to get to the truth. All the while, playing detective and picking up on the subtle clues she has peppered throughout the story. I get a real satisfaction when my theory/theories are proved right and I have unmasked the killer before the team has. In this case, I'd even linked the events and certain people to prove my theory. I even tweeted Carol privately whilst reading and working it all out, detailing my entire thought process and theories to her, knowing full well she wouldn't tell me if I was right or wrong...but I was bursting with the knowledge so I told her anyway. It wasn't until I had finished that she congratulated me on picking up on all the subtle clues.

But I digress...

While AN EYE FOR AN EYE starts off with a bang, it does slow down a little as Kate wrestles with her past trauma. Excerpts from that trauma are played out throughout the story and at first I pondered their relevance, but through them it does serve as a background to Kate's story and to understand her mental state. I did find the build a little slow after the bang of the prologue, but then it all started to come together and I began playing detective to see if I couldn't get to the truth before Kate did.

I love how we're not told what really happened to Kate, allowing us as readers to form our own theories, as the pieces were slowly put together. There were times even I questioned Kate's competence! But I knew Carol would have something up her sleeve to pull out on us midway and turn everything on its head. And she did. But I'd already figured that part out long before it was presented to us.

And then when the investigation came to an end, when all was said and done, Kate had one more task left to do. And in doing so, she opens up something that she cannot unsee or believe. Carol has left readers hanging for the follow up "A Cut for a Cut" (to be published 24th June) and I cannot wait to delve into. The question is, will Kate be strong enough to face this next challenge? Because it will force her to question everything she has ever known.

I wasn't sure if I liked Kate in the beginning, probably because I loved DI Natalie Ward so much in Carol's previous series. But Kate is a lot different to Natalie, who was resolutely tough. Kate is tough too but she is also incredibly fragile. And I think her mental health issues helped make her a more sympathetic character. She could have been an obnoxious bitch alienating her colleagues, but despite her problems she was always professional and treated everyone - colleagues and witnesses, even suspects - with respect. I think I am going to like Kate and look forward to getting to know her and her team better.

A fast paced story once it got going, AN EYE FOR AN EYE is compelling, addictive and will keep you glued to the pages until you have it figured out. A fantastic start to what promised to be an exciting new series.

I don't generally like cliffhangers, but the one we are given at the end this book promises more intriguing tales to come for Kate and her team.

A well worth 5 star read. Recommended for fans of crime fiction with an edge.

I would like to thank #CarolWyer, #NetGalley, #AmazonPub and #ThomasAndMercer for an ARC of #AnEyeForAnEye in exchange for an honest review.

DI Kate Young has been on leave from her job after experiencing a horrific trauma but is personally asked to come back to help with a murder case. She is clearly suffering from PTSD and has to work thru all this while continuing to solve the case.
This is a great new series from Carol Wyer and I loved it! Thrilling and fast paced, she takes you on two different stories; the traumatic experience that forced DI Young to step away from her job and the horrific murders that's now forcing her to return. This is a complex story line that keeps you guessing and glued to the edge of your seat! Great characters too.. can't wait to see what's next!!

SENSATIONAL police procedural, well written with strong characterization, twisty & gritty with intrigue to the mind- boggling conclusion. Terrific beginning for a new series which I will definitely be eagerly anticipating. RECOMMEND fully. Thanks to NetGalley & Thomas & Mercer for this ARC in return for my honest review.

The first in a new series and what a start !! The storyline kept you guessing throughout and how the author linked it to an experience the main character had been through was genius! This book was left on such a cliffhanger I can’t wait to read the next one !

This is the first book that I have read by this author, I was blown away by the very clever storyline. It had me gripped from start to finish

Interesting, but I may have gotten too caught up in the undertones of the events in January. Also dragged on between the current events and those in the past. So many names, characters tough to keep up with them all. The ending was a surprise, didn’t see that coming.

An Eye for an Eye begins with a punch, the opening chapter really catches your attention and makes you wonder what’s going to happen next. There’s no calm introductions to this book, just full force fast pace from the word go!

I really liked the character of Kate Young, and despite everything that she has going on, she still gives her job her all and does it bloody well! It’s great to read a book with such a strong, female lead.

This book is full of twists and turns, keeping you guessing as you go. Despite figuring out who the killer was, I still really enjoyed it and haven’t read a crime thriller with killings quite like this! These were gruesome murders but I think in a busy crime thriller market, you need something that offers different.

This is definitely a series I will be continuing with and looking forward to what Carol Wyer and Kate Young offer up next. A book that’s crammed full of excitement, suspense, intrigue and gore - what more could you want from a crime thriller book!

Loved it!! I was excited to read this because I LOVE the Detective Natalie Ward Series. I found the beginning a little slow and wasn't sure how I felt about the story and characters. Everything changed and I ended up loving the story, characters and writing style. Detective Kate Young finally started coming out of her fog and her murder case definitely got interesting. Kate is one brave lady. All those pills weren't helping her. It took me a little bit but I figured out what must have happened to Chris. I had a suspicion about who the killer might be, but I wasn't sure why. There were so many twists and turns. A great mystery/thriller. Loved the ending!!! I can't wait for the next book.

Definitely recommend the book. I have a feeling this will be one of my favorite series. I can't wait to find out what's next for Kate. I'm sure she will uncover something good and I need to know what everyone is hiding. Look forward to reading more books by the author.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Amazon Publishing UK through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Catching someone who is involved in the police investigation is extremely difficult. Add a supervisor who continually places roadblocks in your way and a recent tragedy in your life, and you have Kate Young at the starting line. How can she overcome the trauma of the love of her life being lost in a train tragedy and physical problems? She is called back early to head-up an investigation into gruesome murders.

Carol Wyer weaves a net of intricate knots and unexpected turns leading to a completely different ending than one would expect. Young refugees escaping a poverty ridden childhood are forced into sexual servitude. A young African male saves every penny to come to England and a new start, only to be forced into a terrible life of sexual debauchery!

Kate is just getting over the loss of her life partner on an outbound London train. She is mentally frail and her supervisor decides to pull her into the investigation despite being under a doctors’ care. The team, including the forensic officers and other investigators, are trying to find out who murdered a prominent citizen. The trail seems to indicate someone very high up in the police department.

As a reader I became aggravated that the lead investigator is being pulled so many different ways. However, the investigation took a very short period of time compared to what is seen in most crime movies. Can Kate keep her team together and bring the perpetrator to justice? A number of red herrings leads to dead ends with police supervisors clamoring for results. I had to finish this book. CE Williams

Kate is a detective who was on leave after a traumatic incident but is asked to come back to help with the hush-hush investigation of the murder of a friend of the superintendant, whom she believes wants her to mess up, but why? It was good, not spectacular. I would try the second book in the series. Three stars.

DI Kate Young waivers on the fine line between sanity and insanity. Six months ago she responded to a call which took her to a railway carriage and the scene of a massacre. Now she has returned to work, fortified by pills, but haunted with hallucinations.
Carol Wyer's novel is more, much more than just a police procedural. The mystery is complex and the characters drawn in depth. One has to keep guessing to the very end.
Gripping and utterly convincing.

This is the first book in the new series by Carol Wyer, introducing Detective Kate Young. Kate is troubled and on leave, when she gets called back to work by her Chief Inspector. I loved the characters in this book. Some are good, others are flawed, just like in real life. The police work was interesting and I couldn't put the book down.

DI Kate Young has just returned to work following a traumatic incident, which is revealed in stages throughout the book. She has been summoned back to head up a murder case of a prominent businessman albeit her being on medication and suffering from PTSD. A prominent business man Alex is murdered which is then followed by another murder; are they linked and if so how? I felt that the book has two storylines which were well placed within the setting of the book.
DI Kate Young was portrayed as a sharp, complex and energetic character. Her small team of detectives; DS Meredith and Donaldson, also had individual personalities and traits that came through. Secrets, lies and suspicions were unravelled, although as it was seen from DI Katie's point of view these could have been unreliable at times due to her PTSD. Other characters were introduced and gave a nice setting to the book.
I did find the train journey between Kate and her boss a little annoying as it was repetitive during the novel.
Apart from that I found this a very enjoyable and easy read. It had a few twists and turns, full of mystery, intrigue and suspense. I found it was a slower pace at the start but then about halfway through it became more exciting and the storyline more intense. It kept me guessing til the end. The story was well tied up with no cliff hangers but has allowed for a second novel to follow on. The last line did surprise me and I am looking forward to the next book on the series. This is the first book I have read by Carol Wyer and I will look forward to the next book in the series.

Book Summary

Spurred on by her reporter husband, Young begins to suspect that the murderer might be closer than she ever imagined.

As she works to uncover the truth, Young unravels a network of secrets and lies, with even those closest to her having something to hide. But with her own competence—and her grip on reality—called into question, can she unmask the killer before they strike again?

Trust can be murdered instantly with lies.

DI Kate Young is living on the edge of a town called Paranoia. It sits with her day and night pressing on the reality that you never quite leave its boundaries. She's on leave from the Staffordshire Police and is suffering from the weight of PTSD. Her daily cocktail is a combo of copious glasses of wine and little white pills delivered on demand through the pressure of her thumb on cellophane.

Kate witnessed the aftermath of a slaughter of innocent victims aboard a train car. Even though the perpetrator was taken out, the visual of it all sits front and center in her brain. And that same brain plays reruns of the incident daily in her mind.

Superintendent John Dickson and her boss DCI William Chase think it's time for Kate to return. She's their top detective. Kate tries to convince herself that she's up to the challenge even though she reaches into her pocket to hear the little crackle of that pill cellophane for reassurance. But how long can she travel on empty?

The body of a successful international exporter has been found in his kitchen. From all indications, Alex Corby had been tortured before his death. He didn't appear to have enemies, although his marriage wasn't on the most stable ground. When another body is found with an extremely similar crime scene, Kate and her team are wary that they've got a serial killer on their hands.

Now, you ask, what makes this one stand out from all the other thrillers out there? Carol Wyer has seeped this one into the very dark corners of doubt dusted with a heavy layer of mistrust. From the beginning pages, we're not sure of what exactly went down with that train incident for Kate to not even trust herself. As she gets back with her tried-and-true team, the team itself is unsure if their lead detective is quite up to taking on this case. Her superiors are pressing Kate for instant results. The more they lean on her, the more Kate starts questioning everything in regard to her own abilities and the parameters of this particular case. This one is a WoW......a smackin' Wow.

I received a copy of An Eye for an Eye through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to Thomas & Mercer Publishers and to Carol Wyer for the opportunity.

Thank you to NetGalley for my copy of this book to review.

I have read all of the Natalie Ward stories so far, so was really looking forward a new character and series - and this did not disappoint. As with her other books, I enjoyed the background of DI Kate Young and I was hooked from the first chapter.

I found the storyline original and fast-paced and enjoyed the investigation & forensics, and the end of each chapter left me wanting to read the next one.

I did guess about Chris fairly early on, and I had an inkling about the murderer but it didn’t put me off the book one bit. I’m pleased that part of the story was left on a cliffhanger to continue into the next book too.

This is definitely a series I will continue with, and I’ve already added book 2 to my ‘wish list’.

I will definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a strong, female-led detective story.

Carol Wyer Has Done It Again!

Detective Kate Young is back to work on a special assignment after being on extended sick leave due to a tragic case a few months earlier which left many people dead and had a devastating effect on Kate and caused severe PTSD. Kate is still not quite herself yet but knows she must prove herself to her superiors or be at risk of losing her honored position and this new case will be even more troublesome since the victim was a good friend of her boss and he expects her to solve the brutal murder case quickly and quietly. Soon after she begins the investigation she realizes something is not right and her boss seems to be hiding Somme important information from her and also Kate begins to wonder if she is being set up to fail on this very high profile case. Kate has a wonderful and efficient team working for her but they are also wondering if Kate returned back to work too early and are starting to question if Kate is stable enough to handle these vicious and highly unusual crimes. Angry and frustrated, Kate refuses to get sidetracked when another identical murder occurs, little does she know that her job is not the only thing at risk in this case but her sanity as well. So many secrets and lies!

I'm a big fan of Carol Wyer and I just loved the "Natalie Ward series" (I hope there will be more books written) so I was excited to try this new book "An Eye For An Eye" but I was a little skeptical as well because I couldn't imagine this series being as exciting as the previous one but I was in for a huge surprise. I loved the book and the characters were completely different yet just as entertaining and interesting. Kate is another strong female detective yet very vulnerable and likeable who seems to have been through a lot in her lifetime. There is also a great cast of many complex and intriguing characters with a lot of red herrings thrown in. I enjoy mysteries and thrillers where I don't know who the killers or predators are until the end of the story and that leaves me feeling very satisfied. Terrific writing, great sub,-plots and an ending that makes you in a hurry to read book the second book.

I want to thank the author "Carol Wyer", the publisher "Amazon Publishing UK/ Thomas & Mercer and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this exciting book and any thoughts and opinions expressed are unbiased and mine alone!

I highly recommend to any reader who enjoys good detective stories of just a good mystery/thriller and I given this captivating book a rating of 4 1/2 Explosive 🌟🌟🌟🌟❇ Stars!!

An Eye for an Eye by Carol Wyer is the first in the Detective Kate Young series.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Thomas & Mercer, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

My Synopsis:   (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)

DI Kate Young returns to work after seeing the aftermath of a massive shooting on a train, but she isn't sure she is ready to work.  She's still on meds, still having panic attacks,  and still having nightmares.  But she's also the forces best detective, and her bosses want her back, even though they consider her "fragile".

When DCI William Case tells her that  Superintendent John Dickson has specifically asked for her to return to take lead on a new homicide case, Kate agrees, even though she thinks it is odd, since Dickson is the one that insisted she take three months leave.  Apparently the victim,  millionaire Alex Corby has been a friend to Dickson since childhood.  Corby was tortured, and an eye removed.

Kate selects DS Morgan Meredith and DS Emma Donaldson to work with her. Both are over-achievers.  But as her investigation continues, her suspicions mount that she is somehow being used, and that she isn't being told everything.  She is also starting to question her own judgement and decisions...as are others.

My Opinions:

WOW.  Okay, that was an amazing read.  Now, I was suspicious of a few people right from word go, and the story proved me right.  The twists were not surprises to me.  However, none of that detracted from the book.

The book sucked me in from the first chapter and held my attention to the last page.

Wyer's writing skills bring such depth to the characters,  and such strength to the plot.

I like how Wyer entwined the story of the train catastrophe into Kate's crime investigation. It gave a good indication of where her mind was, and moved the story in the right direction.  It eventually showed the reason for her mental anguish, which I had guessed early on.

There is some fore-shadowing as to Kate's direction in subsequent books, so I can't wait to see where the next one takes us.

I really enjoyed this book and I was hooked from the start.
It was so well written and easy to follow ,sometimes when there are so many characters it can get confusing..These characters were so well rounded out ,and as someone who lives in the area where the story is set , I could get involved with the book even more..
I hadn’t read anything. by Carol Wyer before so ,while I’m waiting for the follow up to this , I’m trying to get hold of her previous books..
I have already recommended this to several friends and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to others .

I really enjoyed the fast pace of this book and loved the flashback parts! Im deffinatly looking forward to reading the next book in what I think is going to be a brilliant series!

It's been a while since I have came across a good gruseome story and this deffinatly fits the bill.

The story is based around Kate who after a devastating event has came back to work as a police detective, there's a killer and her superior has tasked her the job of catching him.

A great book full of shocks, deceit and a bit of gore thrown in the mix, what more can you need!

Having read and loved all of the previous series by Carol I was looking forward to reading this I wasn’t disappointed. A brilliant start to a new series with characters that are likeable and you have to feel for all the trauma Kate has been through and continues to go through. I was gripped from the first page right until the end. The style of writing is fantastic and I can’t wait for the next instalment, bring it on!!

DI Kate Young is back on the force, working hard to solve the vicious murder of a prominent businessman, but PTSD is her constant companion. Flashbacks to a mass shooting on a train car plague her every move. Her colleagues notice that she’s become confused, stressed, and self-medicating. Does DI Kate Young have what it takes to stop a serial killer while battling her own demons?

The main mystery of An Eye for an Eye is intense, twisting, and has an amazing payoff. The killer is creative and even though the MO remains the same, it’s a heart-pounding story every time they strike. I never could’ve guessed whodunit, but after all the evidence was laid out, it all made perfect sense. There were so many mysteries, red herrings, and untold stories here that I am very glad that this book was clearly set up to be a series.

The representation of life with mental illness is a thing of beauty. Too often, characters with mental illnesses are caricatured, diminished, or treated as other. DI Kate Young is still the best detective on the force, but she has unresolved trauma making it hard for her to get through the day. She may want to work, but her PTSD insists she take more time. The constant interruptions of her flashbacks (triggered by things as innocuous as ketchup on a french fry) and her inner struggle with addiction to the pills that keep her memories at bay is wonderfully emotional.

The writing style immersive and sweeping. Cinematic cutscenes and flashbacks broke up the main storyline. Some were from Kate’s experience before the book began, some were scenes that were retold by suspects, witnesses, etc.

This was the first book I’ve read by Carol Wyer, but this absolutely will not be the last.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Well, don't you just hate it when you work hard on a review then accidentally delete the blinking thing?! It's just happened to me with this one, grrrr. Moan over.

Anyway let's get back to talking about the author and the new book, Carol Wyer is one of my favourite authors, she entertains me no end with her "Mr Grumpy" tweets, I'm always chuffed when I have a new book from her on my TBR pile. I've been with both previous leads DI Robyn Carter and DI Natalie Ward since the beginning both are strong female protagonists, but they both have chutzpah and are loyal to a fault and i will admit I have a soft spot for both of them. I was really looking forward to meeting her newest lead character. I knew as soon as I finished #AnEyeForAnEye DI Kate Young will be joining them soon.

While on leave following a significant incident involving a shooting on a bus, DI Kate Young of Staffordshire Police is approached by her bosses DCI William Chase and Superintendent John Dickson with regard to coming back to work. Although she knows that she's not quite ready she gives in to the pressure, persuaded in part by the promise of the team of her choice, enter DS Meredith and DS Donaldson (the dastardly duo), The further into the book I got the more I couldn't help but feel that on one hand they wanted her back because she was/is their best detective, but on the other they can see she appears to be struggling and maybe a little vulnerable. There was also the possibility that they would be able manipulate her and control the investigation.

The tortured body of a successful businessman was found dead in his home, he doesn't seem to have enemies, albeit his marriage appears as if it's on it's way to hell in a hand basket It's not long before a second body with similar injuies surfaces, obviously they are connected, and that's when the pressure from her bosses begins. I had everything crossed for her, that she'll be able to keep the flashbacks at bay long enough to show them that she's the same, excellent but newly broken police officer she always has been.

Almost from the getgo I worried about Kate, her mental health has taken a bit of a beating, suffering from ptsd having flashbacks. It was sad to read of her self medicating by taking her medication incorrectly alongside a bucketload of wine. (never a good combination). My heart was in my mouth when she takes them behind her teams back. It made me think about the back to the 70's & 80s when a lot of women were prescribed Valium for their "nerves" better known as "mummy's little helper". I knew a few women when I was younger who fell into the dark abyss of addiction whose lives were destroyed by these little blue pills. Crazily I worried even more when she decided to go cold turkey, it's really not the best way to stop that kind of medication.

Don't be fooled into thinking that this is just an ordinary police procedural #AnEyeForAnEye is much more than that, IMHO It's written in easy read style, with chapters such a style that we the reader can easily be tempted to do just one more. The author has planted the seeds for what I hope is to come in a big way and wow I just know that when the fall out from whatever it is hits the pages and personally I can't wait to curl up with all the usual suspects my blanket, chocolate, big mug of tea and number two in this series.

Read for an honest review. Thank you Ms Wyer, #Netgalley and Amazon Publishing UK

A wonderful new series with a lovable, formidable female lead, DI Kate Young.

Kate is recovering from a personal tragedy when she is put on a new case, which is a test of her skills. Assisted by Emma and Morgan, they have to catch a killer before the body count increases.
As they get closer to solving the case Kate discovers that there is a possibility that the system she works for too maybe a part of the larger problem.

I love the DI Natalie Ward series and now Kate Young too is becoming a favourite. Cant wait for the next book in the series.

Kate Young is a top detective but events have had her on leave after a dreadful incident. This left her with severe PTSD. However when a body is found having died in a most unusual & horrific way her superior askes her & a small team to investigate.

I love Carol Wyre's other detective series so I was excited to hear that there was another series with different characters. I found it quite easy to get into this one. Having such a small team made it easy to get to know them. I was a bit confused by Kate at times but guessed some of what was going on with her. The plot itself was gory, twisted & clever. I found it hard to put down as I wanted to see if my suspicions were correct.

Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book. I'm already looking forward to the next one!

The first book in a new series, this is a solid 3.5 star read. It ends in a way to make you get the next book. I really didn't understand why that thread wasn't pursued a little more before the ending, but okay. The story seems overly confusing, especially early on until you guess a thing that takes most of the book to come out. You'll probably guess the other important thing too. However, it's a good story, well written given the dual timelines. Hopefully the team can improve their communication going forward--that was...annoying.

DI Kate Young has entered the building another amazing series to add to Carol Wyers successful collection of series can't wait to read more!

Portrays the harrowing effect of grief and PTSD and pure survival through tragedy, another strong female character with grit steel and determination.

An intense read that keeps you engaged and immersed.

I'm so glad others loved this.
For some reason, I just could not get into this one. The plot too a minute to really catch me and even then, I felt like the mystery of it all was easy to guess pretty early on. I didn't feel the connection with the team and I thought most of the conversations felt off and odd. I wish I'd loved this one.

#AnEyeforanEye #NetGalley I usually read my Netgalley books in order but when a new Carol Wyer book pops up, that order goes out of the window and I go straight to this! I love Carol's books, both her crime thriller and other stories and this book in a new crime thriller series certainly didn't disappoint! Great story line, easy to read with plenty of action to keep you hooked. There is obviously a lot more to the character of Kate y
Young and I can't wait to see how her character develops in future installments. A great 5 star read!!

There were a few clunky plot holes for me but I have forgiven this from the novel as it was such a fun and escapist read. This story follows DCI Kate Young, who is returning to work for the Staffordshire Police after taking some time off due to being first on scene to a traumatic murder spree on a train that left her devastated. Six months later and she thinks she’s put the trauma behind her but ghosts from her past keep popping up. She is assigned to a case where victims seem to be murdered by enforced choking with an instrument and left tied up in their homes.

The further she dives into her new case the more the murder victims seem to connect to her past and the people in her life. Can she push through the pain of the past to find the answers? Who is killing these men and why?

Some bits of the novel (the structure) were organised in an over exaggerated fashion so that the plot twists were more than obvious by the time they were revealed. Also some red herrings were poorly executed and didn’t work as they weren’t convincing enough. That did irk me a little. But the set up of the murders was good and the links between the victims intriguing. I also enjoyed the switching of perspectives.

I am interested in seeing where this series goes as it left on a cliff hanger. I would like to see where the evolution and growth of the character of Kate Young goes.

Thank you to the author Carol Wyler, Thomas and Mercer and Netgalley for a review copy in exchange for an honest review.

An Eye for an Eye by Carol Wyer introduces readers to DI Kate Young, and it is a most promising start to a brand new series. I have loved Ms Wyer's previous work, and was thrilled to get my hands on her latest offering. It did not disappoint.

Returning from sick leave following a tragic case that has left her traumatized, DI Kate Young is called upon to investigate the brutal murder of a prominent citizen, which is followed in short order by the discovery of a second victim. The pressure is on for Kate to solve the case quickly, while at the same time dealing with her post-traumatic stress.

This is a fast-paced read that emotionally reels you in with a complex and empathetic protagonist in DI Kate Young, and I cannot wait to see where Ms Wyer will take us next.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing UK for an ARC of this title.

Great plot with great characters. The story flowed smoothly and had suspenseful twists and turns throughout. It moved a little slowly for me at first but picked up in the end. Some of the plot was a bit predictable but it didn’t affect my enjoyment of the story. The main character had a lot of depth and was very relatable. There were some gruesome parts in this that were also really well done. Overall a decent read

Another of my favorite authors for a good gritty crime story, this will keep you trying to work out who is actually committing these murders. This is good writing and a real murderous crime at its best, I would recommend this and it got a big 5 stars from myself.

This is a new series with DI Kate Young taking the lead, is she fit to be doing this I asked myself but the murder doesn’t faze her it’s her mental health that is causing the problems. Can she work out if someone is out to destroy her or just trying to cover things up? It really captured me so I couldn’t wait to read the next page, I can see this being another great series just like the last one with DI Carter.

From the start Kate feels that people are holding things back from her and her team. Meanwhile her team feel she is not fully focused and may have been called back to work too soon. When an associate of the victim is found dead in similar circumstances a link is established but still Kate and her team struggle to find a motive.

This is the first in the Kate Young series by Carol Wyer and I’ve enjoyed her other series; however I struggled with this one to be honest. The story was good enough but I found the back and forth between the current case and an incident on a train distracting and soon worked out what was going on with “Chris”.

Thanks to Netgalley, Amazon Publishing and Carol Wyer for the ARC of this book in return for an honest review.

An Eye for an Eye is the first book in the Detective Kate Young Series by award-winning author of mystery and romance novels. Having enjoyed reading some of her other series; Detective Robyn Carter and Detective Natalie Ward, I was looking forward to starting this new detective series.

The novels in the Detective Kate Young Series Include:
Book 1-An Eye For An Eye (2021)
Book 2- A Cut For A Cut (June 2021)

DI Kate Young is on leave after suffering a traumatic experience. She’s the force’s best detective, but is suffering from nightmares and her bosses know she’s under pressure, on medication and booze to overcome the trauma. Her boss, Superintendent John Dickson places her on mandatory sick leave, after a breakdown on a train, that we learn more about throughout the book where she almost attacked a civilian.

A few months later, Kate’s friend and friend of her late father, fifty-eight- year- old detective DCI Chase comes to tell her that her boss wants her back at work, to hunt down a serial killer. The victim was Alex Corby, who had been held captive and tortured in his home, was a VIP, his company a massive exporter of British food. Case asked her if she would consider heading up a small team, her and two officers of her choosing. She accepted the offer and chooses two of her fellow officers from her old team, DS Morgan Meredith (dedicated worker that had worked closely on several tough cases in the past) and DS Emma Donaldson (an expert in marital arts).

This proves to be a complex case and the team works meticulously to track down the brutal killer who tortures his victims, leaving clues for the police.

Then another body is found, who has suffered a similar fate. It appears they are linked but why?

Kate’s husband, Chris, a journalist, encourages her to remain strong and steadfast with her investigation.

Kate soon uncovers the truth, a network of secrets and lies and vengeance. Can she reveal the killer before they strike again?

I was glued to this fast-paced crime/mystery with its intriguing plot, well-developed characters and lots of twists and turns and ample red herrings. I loved this book and can’t wait for book 2 to continue the series. Highly recommended!

Many thanks to the author, Thomas & Mercer Publishers and NetGalley for my digital copy.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Natalie Ward books by Carol Wyer so I was excited to discover a new series to explore.

This was a good start to the DI Kate Young series - dark storyline and twists to keep you intrigued.

I'm hoping with the next instalment that I grow to like this series as much as the Natalie Ward one.

3.5 stars

An Eye for an Eye is the first in Carol Wyer's new series featuring Detective Kate Young. In this cracking début instalment, Kate is taking some time out after a bad decision on a previous case leaves her traumatised and on medication. However, Staffordshire police need her back at work to investigate when the body of a successful international exporter is found in his kitchen. Indications are that Alex Corby has been tortured before his death and she realises very quickly that the case is high profile, as well as learning that the victim is a friend of Superindentent John Dickson. Although Kate feels she is not quite ready to take on the case, she decides she will, lured by the promise that she will be able to choose her own team - enter DS Morgan Meredith and DS Emma Donaldson.

I really enjoyed reading An Eye for an Eye and couldn't put it down! With its many twists, I was desperate to reach the end. Having previously read the books from the author's Detective Natalie Ward series including The Sleepover and The Blossom Twins I was praying that this one would be equally as good... and it was! Set in Staffordshire, England, Kate proved to be a fascinating character; she is clearly ambitious though her mental health has taken a beating. Carol Wyer has cast all of her characters well and they all have something brilliant to contribute to the story. The plot was enthralling and as the story progressed the suspense levels rose proportionately and I was kept guessing till the exemplary ending. All in all, An Eye for an Eye really packed a punch. An intense, wickedly good read that I highly recommend. The author has planted the seeds for what I hope will be an amazing series and I can't wait for book number two.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Thomas & Mercer via NetGalley at my request and this review is my own unbiased opinion.

Review An eye for an eye was a great thriller, crime, detective story, call it as you wish. It's well written and I love short chapters, keeps me even more hooked.
The whole plot build from the begging till end is gradually getting better. I didn't guess who the killer can be until more facts came into picture.

Detective Kate Young comes back to her police job after a short leave, trauma, she went through.
Now she has to investigate the murderer who tortures and kills his victims in a very unique way, by choking on small apple pieces.

The storyline itself was very fast paced, full of action so I wanted toearn always more and more, murder, mystery, suspense, tension and twists and turns. Some unexpected twists which later put all the puzzle pieces into place.

This was the first novel I read from Carol Wyer, it was very addictive and I liked the characters too. Highly recommend this author for thriller lovers. Thank you Netgalley for the copy of this book.

AN EYE FOR AN EYE introduces a new series featuring protagonist DI Kate Young. Her backstory explains why she is the way she is. She's been under a great deal of pressure from her last case, which fortunately for her, didn't turn out as bad as it could have. However, that seems to have been the breaking point. She's now no leave and taking medication to cope with her trauma.

She's called back to duty with the Staffordshire Police, to investigate a murder committed by a serial killer who tortures his victims before killing them. He even goes so far as to leave clues for the police. Let the cat-and-mouse games begin.

The more she investigates, the more secrets and lies she discovers. Suspects are varied ..and they seem to all be holding secrets .. even the people closest to her. Her supervisors call to question her ability to handle the case .. and her grip on reality.

This cleverly written plot is filled with suspense, tension, lies, secrets, twists and turns that the reader doesn't see coming. The characters are deftly drawn, and have to admit I did not like Kate at the beginning. It was a slow start, even a bit monotonous, but once the story picked up, it was a wild ride to the unexpected conclusion. Beware: There is a major shocking cliff hanger.

Many thanks to the author / Amazon Publishing UK / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

This is the first book in a new series featuring DI Kate Young. I have read and enjoyed Carol Wyer’s other books and this new series certainly didn’t disappoint. Kate is asked to return to work to investigate a murder case. We learn that she has followed in her father’s footsteps by joining the police force but has been off sick due to a traumatic incident she witnessed which has left her scarred, having night traumas and relying on medication. This incident is revealed in by her in flashbacks. The case to be investigated is the murder of a wealthy businessman, Alex Corby, who has been tortured and had one of his eyes removed. Kate and her team think that it’s someone seeking revenge and start to uncover lots of lies, secrets and suspects. When more bodies turn up she realises that there could be a link between these deaths and the incident she witnessed that left her traumatised. I really enjoyed this book, it was a little dark at times when describing the victim’s injuries and crime scenes but it is a book that you won’t want to put down with a strong main character. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
Thanks to Netgalley and Thomas and Mercer for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

I enjoyed the previous 2 detective series by Carol Wyer and couldn’t wait to get started on her latest 1. Detective Kate Young is suffering from PTSD. She was on leave when she got called back to work to investigate a high profile murder. Although once the best detective at the Station, there are now doubts about Kate’s capabilities. Someone also seems quite keen on seeing her fail. Kate has to prove herself and at the same time, stop a cold, calculating killer.

I enjoyed this case and the investigation especially as it was quite hard to guess the identity of the Perp or the motive behind the murders. Like the in previous series by the author, the investigation was quite well detailed, a fact that I always love in crime thrillers. We had to follow the detectives as they painstakingly put the pieces of the puzzle together.

I enjoyed this book although I struggled with the flashbacks by Kate. I couldn’t fit in the constant flashbacks with present events and this had me frustrated for most of the book. Thankfully, everything fit into place with a banger of a reveal at the end. I just wish so much of the narrative hadn’t been bogged down by the flashbacks. Nevertheless, I have high hopes in the series. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Detective Kate Young.

For the first few chapters of this book I thought I would be reviewing a mediocre story, deserving of 3 stars at best. Boy was I wrong. From about a third of the way in the tension ramped up and layer upon layer of an exciting plot was uncovered. The identity and motive of the killer had me reeling and the jaw dropping conclusion left me eagerly anticipating the next book.

OMG THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR! A heroine as a detective in a story full of twists and tension!
This is my first time reading Carol Wyer's books and it doesn't disappoint me! It's straightly wonderful adventure while reading this book! Can't wait for the 2nd book!

Detective Kate Young is tough physically but psychologically the jury is still out. After being on leave following a traumatic event, Kate is called back to the Staffordshire Police to help with a murder investigation. She is not the same detective that left the department; she's tougher and more suspicious of everyone. As she slowly adjusts to being back at work, her reporter husband encourages her to keep following the clues and solve the case. It is an exciting story with plenty of surprises. You will not want the book to end.

I am a huge fan of this author and was very excited to see her debut a new protagonist. Right off the bat, I could tell that she would be another great character to get behind. Ms. Wyer specializes in main characters who are strong, intelligent, and good at their jobs, but who have messy personal lives and the same character flaws that real people exhibit. I think that Kate is one of her most complex yet. We know from the beginning that she experienced a traumatic event on the job, and the prologue sets up that there are several repercussions from that event. I liked the way that Ms. Wyer related the incident that affected Kate’s status in the department. I thought the investigation allowed for just enough guesswork to keep it interesting but still realistic and true to life. It was truly woven together into a page-turning story. Don’t miss it! First read from this author. Not a bad book but there was definitely one big part of the story that I didn’t like involving the main character. The overall plot was somewhat disjointed for me with how things evolved and resolved. Figuring out the perp was fairly easy for me and the ending seemed rushed.

I will hold off on reading book 2 at this point.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity for an honest review.

It is always a delight to discover a new and promising police procedural crime series. Already, I know that this is one I will be avidly following.

I was not familiar with Carol Wyer's writing, but now, looking at her back catalogue, I realize I have a lot of catching up to do.

This police procedural features a strong policewoman, yet one with overflowing baggage and personal demons. These factors make her interesting and I enjoyed how her colleagues viewed her, some with caring concern, others with suspicion.

The serial murders within the novel involved torture, yet the scenes were not that uncomfortable to read. The plotting was ingenious and included great characterization. Misdirection and red-herrings abound, and the reveal of the serial killer came as a surprise to me.

Throughout the novel, Kate is battling her own demons, trying to solve a high-profile case, and wondering if her superiors are trustworthy.

The ending of this novel is a tad precipitous, but lends itself well as a 'cliff-hanger' which makes the reader eager for more Kate Young. I for one already have the second book in this series loaded on my Kindle.
Highly recommended!

" Trust will always be murdered by lies."

First, I would like to start this review by thanking Netgalley, the publisher Thomas&Mercer, and the author for my ARC e-book copy of this novel.

- SYNPOSIS -
DI Kate Young is about to return to work after being told to go on a 3 month leave after a massive shooting incident. Now she has been called back to be the lead detective on a high-profile case that involves the murder and torture of millionaire, Alex Corby. Corby just so happen to be a childhood friend of Superintendent John Dickson, which is who requested her specifically due to the fact that she is the force's best detective. However, as she dives into this case she begins to wonder if she was made lead detective of this case, because she is the best or is there another, more sinister reason for why she was specifically selected for this case.

- MY REVIEW-
This novel was my first crime fiction novel. and I was not disappointed by this one! This was a novel stuffed full of twists and turns with every page and I could not get enough. I continuously found myself absorbed in the plot and its amazing characters. I would highly recommend this read to all of my other crime fiction lovers!

I finished this the day before yesterday and I rushed right to the next book in the series, completely forgetting that I haven't yet given any feedback on here.

It took me quite long to start reading this because I can't seem to get with the beginning. It's like my attention just floats away and before I knew it, I've been reading without understanding.

But then halfway through Chapter 1, things got a bit intense, piqued my curiousity and then there was a weird sense of foreboding.

It's fun chasing the whole story because of the many twists and turns. Often I had to read some parts again and again just make sure that I understood it correctly, all the while making me more confused.

I think if you're an avid fan of mysteries and thrillers, this is one that you have got to add to your list of must-reads.

It's a haze of a mystery and when clears up a bit, maybe you'll figure out what is up and for sure enjoy the thrill. Just when you think that's it, the author's gonna prove you wrong.

Well-written, fast-paced!

I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of Carol Wyer’s detective series so got really excited when I saw a new series had begun!! This is the first instalment in the DI Kate Young series and what an explosive start…. Kate is back from leave after a traumatic experience, unsure of herself and her capabilities, she is teamed with DS Emma Donaldson and DS Morgan Meredith on a murder case. Kate is a force to be reckoned with and I look forward to developments in her character and see her go from strength to strength. This new series will keep you gripped from the getgo and keep you reading well into the night… it is a fast paced police procedural crime novel with as many twists as a country lane, I can’t wait for the next one.

Wow! This book started off a little slow. Kate is a detective on leave after a traumatic incident. When she is called in to work on a case of a serial killer, she is a little bit harder and more cynical. Along the way her team uncovers secrets and faces challenges from outside sources. The second half of the book really picks up and a great twist at the end.

This is a great detective series that I really enjoyed reading.
I am not sure if it because of how many of these books that I read, but I guessed the ending to this book more or less within the first half of the book.
I can see this series being made into a tv series, one which I would definitely watch!
This series is highly recommended. The author has a great writing style

**Thank You NetGalley for the chance to read this book**
Despite the fact that I had never read anything by this author before, I absolutely loved this book. I like murder mysteries, and this one had me wondering for the most of the time. I did figure out who was responsible before the conclusion, but it didn't detract from my pleasure. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens in the remainder of the series.

First book featuring a new detective, one called back into service whilst off on compassionate leave. It sounded interesting and would have been if there had been less flashbacks, panic attacks (with all the details) and imaginary conversations. It was monotonous and after the first couple of times my eyes glazed over and I just turned the pages, not even skim reading until it/they had passed. I was tempted to jump to the last chapters to see if I was correct about “whodunnit” (I was) but stuck it out to the end. Also if a specific day and date is used you’d think someone would check to see if it was correct but not in this book! I’ve enjoyed this author’s previous novels but think I will give Kate’s future cases a miss. No doubt this new team will be popular with other readers.

Interesting premise for a new detective series; a broken cop almost cracking up before the reader’s eyes.

A new author to me and one worthy of additional attention as quite original ideas flow from her pen.
If you like baffling police procedurals then this book is for you.

Based in Stoke on Trent and I don’t think “The Potteries” or Alton Towers has been over-egged yet. Indeed this plot has the case spanning a couple of counties including places I’m familiar with bringing a more comfortable feel to the book.
DI Kate Young appears to be dealing with the horror of a previous terrorist incident; resentful the case was kept away from her and suffering from flashbacks and PTSD symptoms. She is barely coping at home, yet she is requested to head up a small team into the suspicious death of a senior police officer’s old school chum.
At times she feels she’s being manipulated. Set up to fail for reasons connected to the mass shooting on a train. Unable to function without the tablets she has become dependent on.

I like the development of the investigation. However it seems to be a MIT to be based on just three officers on the case. The work seems to be outsourced in part to others like the tech department but the seriousness of the crimes seems at odds with the resources involved.

Another frustration is that no-one is honest in their replies to police questioning which leads to delays in firm evidence being found. A ploy crime writers use to spread doubt and raise the number of people of interest. While it does not confuse the plot it does stall the process and allows the perpetrator more time to carry out their actions without suspicion or motive becoming clear. The links to an overseas trip is a clever example where this works well. Elsewhere the reasons for incomplete and evasive answers to the questioning is less clear.

Another weakness for me is the signalling of who is behind it all. It is provided without doubt too early and the reaction to who the suspect could be is initially clumsily set aside and out of step with the reader’s own intelligence.

This sense of more senior police manipulation within the book looks like it will be carried forward and Kate Young’s tenacity appears to be the means to get behind this and uncover the truth in future instalments.
A easy read, well paced and with many new ideas to bring to this genre. I will be interested to follow Kate’s journey in the books that follow.

DI Kate Young is on leave. She’s traumatised from an event that happened earlier in the year and on medication to help her cope. Very unexpectedly she’s asked back by her boss and fathers best friend at the request of a more senior officer. A harder more suspicious detective returns. She heads up a small team and begins investigating the murder and the bodies keep coming in. Will she be able to solve this before anyone else dies? I recommend this book. It’s fast paced and also has a psychological element to it. There are many questions raised during this book that are all answered by the end. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading further books in this series. Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest views and opinions.

My thanks to the Author publisher's and NetGalley for providing me with a Kindle version of this book to read and honestly review.
Quality characters and writing that make the reader almost feel part of the story. A Police procedural but much more, there is a psychological part that builds as you read with plenty of surprises and twists along the way, eighty percent into the book and I thought I knew the killer, and what do you know around about the same time our heroine agreed. Slightly disappointing end in one respect, but presumably that continues into book two and perhaps beyond.
Heartily recommended.

This is a 5 star read for sure. A new book by Carol Wyler is always welcome. Especially if it’s the first in a new series featuring detective Kate Young, a proficient and recognized leader. Now there’s something wrong, Kate is afraid of her own shadow, popping pills and on leave from a traumatic event on the job which we learn about throughout the novel. Going back to work too soon, Kate is recruited by the chief himself. The same man who insisted earlier she take a longer leave of absence to recover. I loved Everything about this woman. I loved everything about the mystery of this introductory novel that seems to be figuring in te next one too. Can’t wait to start book 2, especially if book 1 was this strong in character introduction and development.

An Eye For An Eye Carol Wyer
This book was a slow burner for me, and I was starting to wonder where it was going when it picked up the pace, and gathered momentum.
I really liked Kate, and by the end of the booked I was hooked and already want more. Great read.

It took some time to really get into the book if I am going to be honest. But the read was very much entertaining.

Kate is called back into work after a most recent traumatic event to solve a murder. Even though all odds are against her from the beginning she pulls through and definitely was the right person for the job.
i would have to say that the most interesting part for me was how the murderer was killing their victims. Choking them with apples and cutting out their eyes?! Insane!
I do have to say the reveal was my favorite part. I was surprised to know that it was Faith. Not surprised on why she did it. Honestly bringing in the real truth to certain TABOO groups involved in trafficking and underage prostitution is fresh to see. Carol was right to choose this as the background to bring some light to the public. Hard to read but very realistic. Especially reading Faith tell Kate that if she didn't involve herself the police would have NEVER investigated the disappearance of her nephew.
I will say that the last chapter I was expecting more, it slowed down a bit. I was hoping to stay at the edge of my seat, BUT the last page made it. I just hopeed i would've fast forward to the end.
………………..
Thank you very much Carol Wyner, Amazon Publishing UK, and NetGallery for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
