I've never seen Kate this undone. It seemed as if a different character was the lead. Her fragility and mental health were on the forefront of her investigative abilities.

It's been a while since I have came across a good gruseome story and this deffinatly fits the bill.

The story is based around Kate who after a devastating event has came back to work as a police detective, there's a killer and her superior has tasked her the job of catching him.

A great book full of shocks, deceit and a bit of gore thrown in the mix, what more can you need!

I really enjoyed this book and I was hooked from the start.
It was so well written and easy to follow ,sometimes when there are so many characters it can get confusing..These characters were so well rounded out ,and as someone who lives in the area where the story is set , I could get involved with the book even more..
I hadn’t read anything. by Carol Wyer before so ,while I’m waiting for the follow up to this , I’m trying to get hold of her previous books..
I have already recommended this to several friends and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to others .

An Eye for an Eye by Carol Wyer is the first in the Detective Kate Young series.

DI Kate Young returns to work after seeing the aftermath of a massive shooting on a train, but she isn't sure she is ready to work.  She's still on meds, still having panic attacks,  and still having nightmares.  But she's also the forces best detective, and her bosses want her back, even though they consider her "fragile".

When DCI William Case tells her that  Superintendent John Dickson has specifically asked for her to return to take lead on a new homicide case, Kate agrees, even though she thinks it is odd, since Dickson is the one that insisted she take three months leave.  Apparently the victim,  millionaire Alex Corby has been a friend to Dickson since childhood.  Corby was tortured, and an eye removed.

Kate selects DS Morgan Meredith and DS Emma Donaldson to work with her. Both are over-achievers.  But as her investigation continues, her suspicions mount that she is somehow being used, and that she isn't being told everything.  She is also starting to question her own judgement and decisions...as are others.


My Opinions:   

WOW.  Okay, that was an amazing read.  Now, I was suspicious of a few people right from word go, and the story proved me right.  The twists were not surprises to me.  However, none of that detracted from the book.

The book sucked me in from the first chapter and held my attention to the last page.

Wyer's writing skills bring such depth to the characters,  and such strength to the plot.

I like how Wyer entwined the story of the train catastrophe into Kate's crime investigation. It gave a good indication of where her mind was, and moved the story in the right direction.  It eventually showed the reason for her mental anguish, which I had guessed early on.

There is some fore-shadowing as to Kate's direction in subsequent books, so I can't wait to see where the next one takes us.

Carol Wyer Has Done It Again!

Detective Kate Young is back to work on a special assignment after being on extended sick leave due to a tragic case a few months earlier which left many people dead and had a devastating effect on Kate and caused severe PTSD. Kate is still not quite herself yet but knows she must prove herself to her superiors or be at risk of losing her honored position and this new case will be even more troublesome since the victim was a good friend of her boss and he expects her to solve the brutal murder case quickly and quietly. Soon after she begins the investigation she realizes something is not right and her boss seems to be hiding Somme important information from her and also Kate begins to wonder if she is being set up to fail on this very high profile case. Kate has a wonderful and efficient team working for her but they are also wondering if Kate returned back to work too early and are starting to question if Kate is stable enough to handle these vicious and highly unusual crimes. Angry and frustrated, Kate refuses to get sidetracked when another identical murder occurs, little does she know that her job is not the only thing at risk in this case but her sanity as well. So many secrets and lies!

I'm a big fan of Carol Wyer and I just loved the "Natalie Ward series" (I hope there will be more books written) so I was excited to try this new book "An Eye For An Eye" but I was a little skeptical as well because I couldn't imagine this series being as exciting as the previous one but I was in for a huge surprise. I loved the book and the characters were completely different yet just as entertaining and interesting. Kate is another strong female detective yet very vulnerable and likeable who seems to have been through a lot in her lifetime. There is also a great cast of many complex and intriguing characters with a lot of red herrings thrown in. I enjoy mysteries and thrillers where I don't know who the killers or predators are until the end of the story and that leaves me feeling very satisfied. Terrific writing, great sub,-plots and an ending that makes you in a hurry to read book the second book.

I have read all of the Natalie Ward stories so far, so was really looking forward a new character and series - and this did not disappoint. As with her other books, I enjoyed the background of DI Kate Young and I was hooked from the first chapter.

I found the storyline original and fast-paced and enjoyed the investigation & forensics, and the end of each chapter left me wanting to read the next one.

I did guess about Chris fairly early on, and I had an inkling about the murderer but it didn’t put me off the book one bit. I’m pleased that part of the story was left on a cliffhanger to continue into the next book too.

This is definitely a series I will continue with, and I’ve already added book 2 to my ‘wish list’.

I will definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a strong, female-led detective story.

Now, you ask, what makes this one stand out from all the other thrillers out there? Carol Wyer has seeped this one into the very dark corners of doubt dusted with a heavy layer of mistrust. From the beginning pages, we're not sure of what exactly went down with that train incident for Kate to not even trust herself. As she gets back with her tried-and-true team, the team itself is unsure if their lead detective is quite up to taking on this case. Her superiors are pressing Kate for instant results. The more they lean on her, the more Kate starts questioning everything in regard to her own abilities and the parameters of this particular case. This one is a WoW......a smackin' Wow.

DI Kate Young has just returned to work following a traumatic incident, which is revealed in stages throughout the book. She has been summoned back to head up a murder case of a prominent businessman albeit her being on medication and suffering from PTSD. A prominent business man Alex is murdered which is then followed by another murder; are they linked and if so how? I felt that the book has two storylines which were well placed within the setting of the book.
DI Kate Young was portrayed as a sharp, complex and energetic character. Her small team of detectives; DS Meredith and Donaldson, also had individual personalities and traits that came through. Secrets, lies and suspicions were unravelled, although as it was seen from DI Katie's point of view these could have been unreliable at times due to her PTSD. Other characters were introduced and gave a nice setting to the book.
I did find the train journey between Kate and her boss a little annoying as it was repetitive during the novel.
Apart from that I found this a very enjoyable and easy read. It had a few twists and turns, full of mystery, intrigue and suspense. I found it was a slower pace at the start but then about halfway through it became more exciting and the storyline more intense. It kept me guessing til the end. The story was well tied up with no cliff hangers but has allowed for a second novel to follow on. The last line did surprise me and I am looking forward to the next book on the series. This is the first book I have read by Carol Wyer and I will look forward to the next book in the series.

I loved the characters in this book. Some are good, others are flawed, just like in real life. The police work was interesting and I couldn't put the book down.

Kate is a detective who was on leave after a traumatic incident but is asked to come back to help with the hush-hush investigation of the murder of a friend of the superintendant, whom she believes wants her to mess up, but why? It was good, not spectacular. I would try the second book in the series. Three stars.

Interesting, but I may have gotten too caught up in the undertones of the events in January. Also dragged on between the current events and those in the past. So many names, characters tough to keep up with them all. The ending was a surprise, didn’t see that coming.

An Eye for an Eye begins with a punch, the opening chapter really catches your attention and makes you wonder what’s going to happen next. There’s no calm introductions to this book, just full force fast pace from the word go!

I really liked the character of Kate Young, and despite everything that she has going on, she still gives her job her all and does it bloody well! It’s great to read a book with such a strong, female lead.

This book is full of twists and turns, keeping you guessing as you go. Despite figuring out who the killer was, I still really enjoyed it and haven’t read a crime thriller with killings quite like this! These were gruesome murders but I think in a busy crime thriller market, you need something that offers different.

This is definitely a series I will be continuing with and looking forward to what Carol Wyer and Kate Young offer up next. A book that’s crammed full of excitement, suspense, intrigue and gore - what more could you want from a crime thriller book!

Loved it!! I was excited to read this because I LOVE the Detective Natalie Ward Series. I found the beginning a little slow and wasn't sure how I felt about the story and characters. Everything changed and I ended up loving the story, characters and writing style. Detective Kate Young finally started coming out of her fog and her murder case definitely got interesting. Kate is one brave lady. All those pills weren't helping her. It took me a little bit but I figured out what must have happened to Chris. I had a suspicion about who the killer might be, but I wasn't sure why. There were so many twists and turns. A great mystery/thriller. Loved the ending!!! I can't wait for the next book.

Definitely recommend the book. I have a feeling this will be one of my favorite series. I can't wait to find out what's next for Kate. I'm sure she will uncover something good and I need to know what everyone is hiding. Look forward to reading more books by the author.

Add a supervisor who continually places roadblocks in your way and a recent tragedy in your life, and you have Kate Young at the starting line. Carol Wyer weaves a net of intricate knots and unexpected turns leading to a completely different ending than one would expect. Young refugees escaping a poverty ridden childhood are forced into sexual servitude. A young African male saves every penny to come to England and a new start, only to be forced into a terrible life of sexual debauchery!

Kate is just getting over the loss of her life partner on an outbound London train. She is mentally frail and her supervisor decides to pull her into the investigation despite being under a doctors’ care. The team, including the forensic officers and other investigators, are trying to find out who murdered a prominent citizen. The trail seems to indicate someone very high up in the police department.

As a reader I became aggravated that the lead investigator is being pulled so many different ways. However, the investigation took a very short period of time compared to what is seen in most crime movies. Can Kate keep her team together and bring the perpetrator to justice? A number of red herrings leads to dead ends with police supervisors clamoring for results. I had to finish this book. CE Williams

The first in a new series and what a start !! The storyline kept you guessing throughout and how the author linked it to an experience the main character had been through was genius! This book was left on such a cliffhanger I can’t wait to read the next one !

SENSATIONAL police procedural, well written with strong characterization, twisty & gritty with intrigue to the mind- boggling conclusion.
