If you were on holiday with your siblings and had a phone call in the middle of the night asking you to come because they have just killed someone would you go? Would you help bury the body? Or would you persuade them to go to the police even though you are in a foreign country and the law may be slightly different meaning they may go to prison for life in that country even though it was an accident? How far would you actually go?

Joe, Cathy and Franny are really close, they work together, they live next door to each other. When Fran calls in a state Cathy and Joe immediately go to her, they are in Verona, Italy. Franny says she accidentally hit someone with her car as she forgot they drove on the other side of the road and they are in the middle of nowhere. Joe and Cathy need to protect their baby sister, she has a 2 year old boy Paul, if Franny goes to prison what will happen to Paul?

The story is told in the then and now, jumping back and forth, in the now there is a trial but who is on trial? Told from the perspectives of the characters, this is a story full of plot twists and turns, that will keep you guessing.

The characters are believable, three dimensional as the reader gradually learns more about each of them. You begin to understand to an extent why they are so close. But what if Franny hasn’t told the whole truth? How do you cope when back home with what you have done? Will the siblings be able to remain so close?

It’s a story that really makes you think what you would do, it’s easy to say you would go to the police, but if you were abroad where the laws are different would that change anything?

A brilliant read, thank you to #netgalley and #MichaelJBooks for an eARC of this book in exchange for and honest, fair and unbiased review.

Sadly I couldn't really connect with this. I found it a bit flat in places and it just didn't grab me. I read others by Gillian McAlister and throughly enjoyed them but this one just wasn't for me.

Thank you Netgalley.

Good read. A great look at family loyalties.
You can always trust your family, or can you?
Brilliant twist at the end

So I really struggled with this one - I've not read any of Gillian books although I have a couple on my shelves and also on my TBR so I was really looking forward to finally picking one of her books up. Unfortunately, I was a little bit disappointed with this one! It just started so slow and just seemed to carry on that way. I had so little interest in carrying this on and I didn't feel it really got any better - especially since all the characters were so unlikable and I just felt like I couldn't care less. Even the twist didn't really improve things.

I enjoyed the premise of the story but didn't feel like there was the normal amount of twists and turns that i would expect from a Gillian McAllister book. It took me a while to get into the book and once i did, it was a quick read.

I found the characters hard to connect with and at times they were unlikeable and i think this was the downside of the book. Because i didn't connect with the characters, i found myself not really caring what happened to them and this took away from the story and the way the book was written. As always it was written well, it was just the character elements that let this down slightly.

However, this will not put me off reading more books by this author and i look forward to the next one.

When Frannie kills a man she asks her family for help. They help bury the body but soon become entangled with all the lies they are having to tell.

The premise for this book sounded interesting but unfortunately, I did not enjoy this one. I found it took me a long time to get into this story and felt that the plot moved very slowly. The story is told in multiple POVs which didn't really work for me as I found I couldn't get invested in the characters. I just really struggled to feel invested in this story and it took me a long time to get through.

Overall I did not enjoy in this one and I'm not sure whether I would pick up any future books from this author.

I loved How To Disappear so much that I was really excited to read another Gillian McAllister. The characters are well drawn and the setting in Italy at the beginning nicely described. It was a bit of a slow start and it wasn't until after The Big Twist (I'll say no more) that the narrative started to pick up pace and I couldn't put the book down.

Overall, I enjoyed it but it took me a while to get into.

This is a superbly written book about how far you would go to protect one of your siblings in the worst times of their life. Frannie, Cathy and Joe Plant are as close as siblings can be ever since a trauma in their childhood made them realise how precious family is. But even family ties have their limits don't they?
I love the character development in this book as the author draws 3 completely different personalities for her main characters. Frannie is the baby of the family and as such is protected by her 2 older siblings - often to their own detriment. Cathy is the thinker of the family, who always knows what is best to do in a crisis (doesn't she?) and keeps a level head. Joe is the fiery one, act first and think later which has led to him having a bit of a reputation for being a bit too free with his fists. The combination of the 3 Plant siblings means they are a pretty solid team. But the events of 'That Night' are enough for the cracks in their firm foundation to start showing.
It's best to go into this book with minimal knowledge of the plot as it gradually opens itself up to the reader, slowly but steadily. The mistrust between the individuals festers away below the surface and old allegiances and arguments come to the fore as they all wonder how to move forward with their daily lives.
I certainly was unprepared for the climax to the story - you know there's vital information missing but as regards who has ownership of all the facts and whether they've shared it with anyone is anyone's guess!
A sinister read which kept me guessing right through to the final page.

A mystery about sibling bonds that has many twists. Despite a slow start, I enjoyed the characters and the storytelling.

That Night, by Gillian McAllister
Available: NOW
Rating: 4/5
Oh, this was excellent. I love a good thriller, and this book is a masterclass in how to write a pacy and on-the-edge-of-your-seat novel. I got sucked right in to the family’s dilemma, and loved seeing each twisty plot point unravel. It really kept me on the edge of my seat. McAllister captures the familial relationship perfectly, and the juxtaposed trial and holiday/post holiday cover-up sequences work brilliantly.

I read this at a loss as to how one person could deceive someone they profess to love so much let alone their own brother and sister..
extremely well written had me riveted to the spot desperate to read …. Just one more chapter!!!

That Night by Gillian McAllister was a fantastic book. I loved it from start to finish and a few times was absolutely surprised by the twists and turns.

The blurb asks "What would you do to protect your family?" ANYTHING.

And so it is that we follow the story of Frannie, Cathy and Joe after THAT NIGHT. The night that Frannie murders someone and Cathy and Joe help bury the body whilst on holiday in Italy.

The journey continues back home in the UK where they trip over their lies and everything becomes a tangled web. The story is full of secrets, past and present. Can you really ever trust anyone?

Another excellent thriller from Gillian McAllister. I cannot wait for her next one.

Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Michael Joseph UK for a copy in return for an honest review.

This book had me hooked from the first page. Amazing twists and turns. Enjoyed the characters and writing style I would recommend this highly! Massive fan of this author.

That Night was full of devious twists that, unusually, I did not predict - I love that.

It basically poses the question: how far would you go to protect a loved one?

On holiday in Verona, siblings, (Cathy, Joe and Frannie) are all involved in covering up an accident. All to protect little sister Frannie.

But once they set out on that journey, there is no going back. Back home in Birmingham, their lives will never be the same. As the web of lies increase, and more and more pressure builds, what and who will give first?

A thoroughly enjoyable and original plot.

Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this title in return for an honest review.

As an avid fan of Gillian McAllister I was really excited to get an ARC of her newest novel.

Now I must admit to start with I wasnt fully invested, it's definitely a slow burner and took a good 35/40% before I was gripped BUT once it took hold of me I couldn't put it down.

I loved the whole topic of the family dynamic.. what would you do and how far would you go for someone you love? I also really enjoyed the questioning of morals, it definitely makes you think of your own!

The alternating POVs of siblings really held my interest and the twists and turns were cleverly woven in throughout.

It's a fantastic read once you get into it, it just takes a little perseverance!

Huge thanks to netgalley and Penguin Michael Joseph UK for the ARC.

Before I start this review I have to admit I’m a bit of a Gillian McAllister fan, so I was really looking forward to reading this latest book. I wasn’t disappointed and was drawn into this drama from the outset. The decisions made one fateful night of a brother and his two sisters to cover up the death of a third party has it recriminations and repercussions long after the event. I found myself thinking about what I would do and where would be my line between loyalty and self preservation. An intriguing study of family dynamics and structure. The reason for the downgrade to 4 stars is that having lived in Italy I found the Italian part of the book a little far fetched. For example the fluency in English of all the policemen - whereas in reality most of them don’t speak a second language. Also I was slightly sceptical about the relationship of Joe and his wife Lydia who seemed to me to be the least rounded character who was used almost as a literary device rather than a real person.

The book follows the fall out between 3 siblings after that night on holiday. I do not think I could do what they did throughout the book, regardless of how much i love my sister. The way in which the relationships between all the characters changes, as they all dig themselves into a bigger mess, is interesting, and fun to read.

The pace of the book was fast and I finished it quickly. This was a fab thriller.

I love a good drama which the main focus is family especially siblings. This is a fantastic page turner which immediately draws you in. Just how far will family go to save you especially when it becomes clear all is not what it seems. A must read thank you to netgalley for my advanced copy

Thank you Penguin Michael Joseph UK and Netgalley for an absolute blinding page turner
Although the synopsis had me interested this was a blinder of a book. Well written, great characters and good plot. I loved this, and need more by Gillian.

This book kicks off in the middle of the action straight away and that is it, you are hooked in! The story jumps back and forth between ‘ That Night’ and present day for the main characters. A truly fantastic read with a realistic feel. The three siblings at the centre of the story display a strong bond of loyalty to one another which is an important element in the plot. I don’t want to reveal any spoilers but the many twists in this book ticked all the boxes for me. Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin for the opportunity to read an advance copy and also for the introduction to this fab writer, Gillian McAllister.
