Rose rushes to England when her sister, Kate, dies suddenly. But why hadn’t she told her she was ill? It doesn’t take long for Rose to realise that things are not as they seem.

I found this book quite slow and a bit disjointed. It seemed to rely on a few too many coincidences for my liking! It did pick up pace towards the end, but I wasn’t sure of the story as a whole. I didn’t really like any of the characters and was ambivalent about their stories. It was a satisfactory read, but it didn’t grab me as others in this genre have.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for my copy of this book.

Dark, twisty and unsettling; everything I love in a novel! This is another great read by this author. I would definitely recommend to those who like thrillers.

Compelling, Dark, Intriguing Domestic Noir...
Compelling, dark and intriguing domestic noir from Christobel Kent. Protagonist, Rose, is determined to find the truth following the death of her sister Kate. On arriving at the family’s remote and, frankly, unsettling, house general unease turns to full blown suspicion. Credible characters and a solid sense of mounting tension make for a top read.

I've read quite a few of Kent's books,and they've all been good.
This one for me though, just is a bit too slow.
I felt we were almost at the end before anything really happened.
Some people love the slow burn, but it just didnt work for me this time.
However, the writing as always is always good, and characters relatable.

“The Widower” by Christobel Kent is a darkly atmospheric novel about one sisters search for the truth following the unexpected death of her older sister. With a slow burning start to the story, it soon becomes obvious that there is an underlying tension between Rosie and her brother-in-law, and together with the old run down house they are staying in, the tension crackles with each new chapter and you just know that something big is coming. A compelling page turner of a read, I’d recommend this to fans of psychological thrillers. My sincere thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.

Rose is shocked when her older sister, Kate, dies suddenly. She returns home to help Kate’s husband, Evan and her children. But it would seem her help is not needed, or wanted. The house is in a shocking state of disrepair and Evan seems completely oblivious to the fact that his wife is dead. It’s only after Rose finds a message that Kate has left for her to find that Rose begins the slow and painful process of discovering what really happened to her sister. Kent is simply one of the best writers in the genre, and her newest book will not disappoint
