Description

'The Widower seethes with atmosphere - I read the first half slowly, almost unable to bear the thrumming tension, and the second half at full pelt. Haunting and heart-wrenching, this book is reminiscent of Daphne Du Maurier' - Observer

He promised, until death do us part.

When bossy, loving, sensible Kate dies suddenly, her little sister Rose dutifully returns from a carefree life abroad to help Kate's widower and the two children Rose has never met. But she is unsettled to see no trace of her warm-hearted sister in the remote, dilapidated house, nor in Kate's cold, distant partner, Evan.

After stumbling across a message that only her sister could have left for her, Rose's unease around the circumstances of Kate's death turns to open suspicion, but she knows better than to ask the grieving widower for answers.

Determined to discover the truth of her sister's terrible last days, Rose has no choice but to keep looking. Eventually, she senses, the dark house will give up its secrets. But she is not prepared to admit that whoever threatened Kate's life might now be coming after her...

Rose is shocked when her older sister, Kate, dies suddenly. She returns home to help Kate’s husband, Evan and her children. But it would seem her help is not needed, or wanted. The house is in a shocking state of disrepair and Evan seems completely oblivious to the fact that his wife is dead. It’s only after Rose finds a message that Kate has left for her to find that Rose begins the slow and painful process of discovering what really happened to her sister. Kent is simply one of the best writers in the genre, and her newest book will not disappoint

“The Widower” by Christobel Kent is a darkly atmospheric novel about one sisters search for the truth following the unexpected death of her older sister. With a slow burning start to the story, it soon becomes obvious that there is an underlying tension between Rosie and her brother-in-law, and together with the old run down house they are staying in, the tension crackles with each new chapter and you just know that something big is coming. A compelling page turner of a read, I’d recommend this to fans of psychological thrillers. My sincere thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.

This was a good read overall despite being a bit slow to start with. The characters were intriguing and quite relatable too. The plot was well thought out and engaging. It is definitely a book that I will be recommending!

A dark read written beautifully. It has a gothic eerie feel and could easily translate into a TV series or film.
There are lots of twists and mystery to ponder on. And it is a real page turner.
The descriptions in the book of the house and setting were just wonderful and I felt I was there.
A great gothic mystery.

When Kate dies her sister comes back from Italy to help out. She finds them living in an old house supposedly haunted.
And then she starts to feel uncomfortable

This book drew me in from the first page and I felt I knew both Kate and Rose.
Interesting characters and super storyline
