this was a beautifully done poetry collection, it was a really interesting concept and I really had a great time reading this.

Poems about life and spirituality are my favorite, and "A God in a Human Body" did not disappoint. The only critique I have is that I felt that some of the poems required more shaping and that the collection could have been organized a little better. But, apart from those minor things, I enjoyed the collection as a whole!
Thank you Net Galley for an ARC of this book in return for a fair and honest review.

The poetry of A god in a Human Body was beautiful, but I felt they were a little all over the place and the collection didn’t have a cohesiveness I would have enjoyed. He tackles a lot of hard issues, such as being a Black man, raising Black girls, and grief.

One day, I’d like to check out more of Akinyemi’s work.

Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for an advanced review copy! A god in a Human Body will be released on January first.

A GOD IN HUMAN BODY by Tolu A. Akinyemi

🌼This one is for the poetic types in the audience. So, this is from netgalley.

🌼Honestly I always wanted to read a poetic genre and this is my first one.

🌼So, about the poems I think Tolu A. Akinyemi has a collection of some deep thoughts. His poems speaks loud for him. Some of them were highly relatable.

🌼He has touched so many untold aspects. And when a person reads one of these poems there is a blast of thoughts in there mind about different situations.

🌼Well, I am not a big fan of poems but I wanted to try one. For anyone who are into poems they must try this.

🌼Tolu A. Akinyemi is famous for his poems on such untouched topics and deep thoughts. He can rather take his reader to a spiritual journey altogether.

🌼So go on and try this one and have fun with your perceptions.

🌼My favourite poem is Father of a Queen

This is a collection of poems about a diverse array of topics. Many of them have an 'epic' feel; like they were meant to be in fantasy novels or screened right before an episode of a dystopian series. Tolu' does write beautifully, and some of the poems struck a chord with me. For the most part though, I found the collection to be underwhelming..there just wasn't enough of that special something. Of course, not every piece in a collection will resonate with people, but I just found it difficult to intuit the deeper meaning of many of the poems here.

I really don't know how I could describe what A God in a Human Body is about. It is about so many things all at once, but I supposed it is mainly about life.

On a surface level, I enjoyed a God in a Human Body. The writing was good, the topics were engaging, I was interested in what the author had to say.

Unfortunately for me, I found that the poems just weren't enough. They did not dive deep enough into the topics at hand to be thought-provoking. By the end of this poetry collection, I felt like I hadn't read anything. I reread quite a bit of it and tried to think deeper about what the author was saying, but even still I could not find enough substance in most of the poems to feel satisfied.

I think maybe the author was trying to do too much. Perhaps I would have gotten more out of this if there had been fewer topics being discussed, and instead was just more thorough about a handful of them. I'm not sure, but either way I was left deeply unsatisfied. I can see the talent that the author clearly has for writing, and would like to read more from him, but this one was just not for me.

This poetry collection by Tolu‘ A. Akinyemi is raw, but easy to grasp at the same time. Akinyemi touches on a broad array of topics, ranging from spirituality, power, patriarchy, divinity and race and with every poem he is able to touch the reader and make them feel yet another emption. It is filled with brilliant word plays, critical thinking and gratefulness at the same time. While it is hard to pick a single poem I liked best, the two last poems spoke to me because the whole collection is summed up in a way that is essential to everyone: you should always be grateful for what you have.

Thank you very much to the author for the early access. I would highly recommend these poems to everyone, who thought about giving poetry a try, to everyone who wants a unique perspective on spiritual and powerful poems or who just wants to have a great time!

Es interesante. La representacion de dioses en cuerpos o mismo el ver a una persona and worship them para luego pasmarlo me resultó bastante intrigante. Lastima que quedó medio corto y las ultimas páginas eran para promocionar otras obras.

I absolutely adored a few of these poems, including 'Religion' (page 46). A lot of the other poems unfortunately only scratched the surface, never fully exploring any of the ideas mentioned.

Every page I read, it became more obvious to me that this book was written by a man. A lot of these poems use "goddess" and "shero," both words that portray the idea that women are only valued if they are either ridiculously beautiful or as compared to a man. Ironically, I actually loved the poem "Shero" (page 48) for the reason that it seemed to be the first to paint women as human rather than goddesses or Amazons or deranged (page 35) or even wh*res - on page 37, there is a poem about a woman with a free body and sexuality and she is shamed for her lost “sense of virtue" (sigh).

Overall, this book was definitely just not for me. I think that this book was an interesting read - but perhaps more interesting to analyse the underlying misogyny and surface-level "wokeness" than to actually read. 2/2.5

A God In A Human Body by @tolutoludo

It’s the ninth poetry collection book from the philosopher-poet. This book explores the spiritual aspects, divinity and the enormous power we posses while we traverse in this earthly passage as mentioned truly. Couldn’t agree more!

I don’t want to write anymore cause I want you all to read it for yourself cause you’ll find peace of mind which I can assure you at least I can tell that for myself.

Some of the poems I already adored and screenshot them so that I can re read again and again whenever I feel low.
Mainly,
* Accidental Feminist
* Whore-Ship
* How would you draw a God’s portrait as a poet?
And many more like these.

Collections are beautiful. Though for me the language it was written a bit tough to understand as I’m not English so sometimes it confused me but I managed to read it at one sitting cause I craved for more.

In this time of pandemic, I’d highly recommend this book.

Thank you @NetGalley @TheRoaringLionNewcastle for the #arc in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this poetry collection! As a poet myself, I definitely understand the poet’s point of view. The imagery in this collection was unreal and I felt as if there was a god inside of my body just reading it. I definitely will continue to read this person’s work!

I do not commonly read poetry, but I really enjoyed this anthology. The writing was very well written and emotive, I highly recommend to anyone who is a lover of poetry , and even people who do not typically pick up poetry like me.

I really liked a lot of the poems in this! “Carnage”, “marry me”, “father of a Queen” and “A portrait of a Goddess” were a personal favourite! I kept rereading them and thinking about them later.

What a luscious prose! Definitely what one the best poetry collection I’ve read so far this year. The language is impeccable, vibrant and heavy with imagery. Also loved the themes of feminism, spirituality, war, violence, and faith.

Simply stunning!

Thanks to #Netgalley for making this book available to me.

This book is a collection of thoughts, shared ethnic aspirations, emotions on fatherhood, feminism, race and sexual irony. Tolu was able to pack various emotions into one collection and it can be seen that he is a thinker who thinks of how powerful humans are and the innate ability we all seem to forget sometimes.

There are a few poems on feminism that I really enjoyed "Father of a Queen" and "Accidental Feminist" because they show that men too can be feminist and they have a great capacity to teach their children this.

I really enjoyed it and I will be checking out some of his other works.

i thoroughly enjoyed reading this poetry collection. this was easy to read and very beautiful. i loved the language. it touches on many themes and it was hard-hitting at times. some poems i had to take some more time to really grasp the meaning behind it, but nontheless it was a very pleasant experience. i definitely recommend this to everyone looking for a quick, but meaningful read.

This collection is a great collection of work. I originally rated it 3.5 stars and rounded up for a few reasons. As an Female that can and will always be labeled African American in the States (and probably everywhere else in the world once I speak) I can wholeheartedly appreciate this collection of thoughts 💭 Especially when expressed by a Black Man. #ProtectBlackWomen

I initially gave it 3.5 stars because after reading the description of the collection on NetGalley I thought we were about to explore more of the idea behind us being eternal beings living out an experience in mortal bodies. While this collection sort of touched on that idea it also more often than not kept us in the minds of mortals rather than in part of our minds (spiritually speaking) that is eternal.

Nonetheless, I figured maybe I was expecting too much and rounded up to 4 stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Because #BlackLivesMatter, Black History Matters, Our History before it was stolen and rewritten by those that enslaved us Matters. #OneLove ❤️🗣💪

Reviewing poetry collections is often so difficult because poetry is so personal.

To describe what this collection is about would be doing it a disservice but I can describe what it made me feel which was powerful and divine. It explored the nature of mortality and spirituality in a way that I was able to connect with deeply and understand.

Despite this, there were a few poems, mainly covering feminism that I had to read over to understand the full meaning. I also had an issue with the order, I think these two points paired together made the reading experience flow less for me.

My personal favourites were "solemn" and " portrait of a goddess". Each made me feel two completely different feelings but I relate and I think that's what made me enjoy them so much.

Overall, I would recommend this as something short yet meaningful.
