Cleverly written and compelling! I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

Oh, what a great book this is! We know from page one that Oscar is missing and by chapter three they’ve found his body. I love a book that gets straight to the action, this helped grab my attention from the start and then I was hooked until the final page.

Beth can’t quite believe what they are saying. Her husband Oscar has been found dead and it looks like he took his own life. Why would he do that? He wasn’t depressed, well not that she’d noticed. Things weren’t all that rosy between them, but she is sure he wouldn’t leave her and the kids in this way.

We follow Beth in this story as she learns more and more about her husband and begins to wonder if she ever really knew him at all. As secrets are revealed it certainly looks like Oscar had a good enough reason to end his life, but it also looks like others may have had a pretty good reason to end it for him!

My detective skills were definitely on point for this story as I managed to guess a lot of the twists, but the great thing is I still had that element of doubt each time. Thinking am I right or aren’t I. You may think this makes the book sound predictable, but I wouldn’t say that at all. What I would say is that it is a very well written and cleverly plotted story that played out exactly as I wanted it to, resulting in the perfect ending. I honestly wouldn’t change a thing!

The characters were interesting people and I felt hugely suspicious of them all at one time or another. Some were more likeable than others and I think Jo created the perfect mix. I loved the short chapters, I always find that this makes the book easier to read, it doesn’t make it easier to put down though!

I think this book would make a great TV drama. I have the perfect vision in my head of the setting and the characters, let’s hope it is one we see on our screens soon.

Huge thanks to Jo Jakeman, Penguin Random House UK and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book.

A good domestic thriller.
Oscar doesn't return home one night. Beth finds a note which says sorry, that's it. A body is found at the bottom of cloud drop. Was it suicide or murder?
Beth thought they had the perfect marriage but soon many disturbing things about Oscar come to light.
Left behind to sort the mess Beth starts to put the pieces together.
This was a fast paced thriller that had you thinking that yes he did commit suicide and then then thinking that yes he was murdered.
I loved the final twist. Very well written that had me racing to the end to put all the threads together.
Thanks to Netgalley and Random House uk for the ARC in return for an honest review.

I blooming loved this book. It restored my faith in a genre that, for me, had been getting a bit samey. This book was a refreshing change from the mundane and had me literally on the edge of my seat all the way through.
Oscar Lomas is found dead at the bottom of a remote cliff in an area well used by hikers. He being an experience hiker himself, the police are baffled as to what has happened. But when combined with a "sorry" note left for Beth, his wife, they rule suicide. Beth is not convinced, not at all, and is determined to figure out what really happened. His family aren't sure, brother and parents alike. But has Beth bitten off more than she can chew as she starts to uncover secret after secret about Oscar and discovers a whole other life she was previously unaware of? But that still doesn't mean he took his own life... she just has to prove it...
Oh my! This book had me running around, chasing my tail all the way through as I tried, in vain, to second guess what in the heck was going on. What was the truth? Oscar has been keeping so many secrets, telling so many lies and displaying so much duplicitous behaviour that I am surprised he had time for all the mundane things in life. Oh and he had a few enemies to boot!
I pretty much gave up trying to work it all out and, about half way through, just buckled up, sat back and enjoyed the roller coaster ride the book took me on. To be honest, when all was said and done, and the eventual truth all came out, apart from one thing that I did manage to guess right, the rest pretty much slapped me in the face, I didn't see the half of it. Not that it came out of left field, I hasten to add. I have to give the author credit for planting all the subtle clues that I pretty much just trod all over on my way to the finish!
This is the third book I have read my this author and it's the third 5star book. I really do have to admire both her plotting and execution, as well as creating characters that really do get under your skin. Only bad thing is that now I have to wait ages for her next book.
My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this gripping, emotional, tense thriller. The plot was cleverly thought out and the writing engaging; kept me turning the pages faster and faster, particularly towards the end. Give it a read, you’ll be glad you did.

This is the first Jo Jakeman book I've read but it certainly won't be the last. An incredibly tense and gripping thriller. It had me captivated from the start.

A good robust whodunit and a story that kept me interested throughout
Beth has a good life with Oscar, not perfect but good but then when Oscar is found dead all the things she worried about when he was alive become reality, she had wondered what her husband was up to but she had no idea so much would be revealed on his death…..
Exploring the stages of grief the book takes you through Beth’s experiences and as she begins to think there is more to Oscars death than the Police do,secrets become general knowledge and the mystery deepens
Good characters, the theme of suspected suicide handled sensitively and very readable writing including some very darkly funny but true observations about how people react to grief made this a book I enjoyed

This was an excellent read that I just had to keep on reading. It was full of deeply emotional situations and characters whichinmany ways meant that it was a dark book.DC Lowry Endecott was such a warm, strong determined woman unlike Beth, the wife, who came across as weak and being controlled by her husband Oscar. The plot was good with many subplots that added to the interest and twists. I loved that it was an unexpectede ending with all getting what they deserved.
Oscar was ceretainly not a nice character and Jo Jakeman described the characters with their flaws very well.
A great author and I highly recommend this book to others. It is certainly not the usual police crime story.

A good read with lots of twists.
Beth's husband Oscar is found dead everyone and the police says it was suicide but Beth doesn`t believe this and try's to find out the truth but finds out Oscar was not the man she married and everyone she knows has a secret.
Loads of twists, well worth a read.

Plot

When the body of Oscar Lomas, an experienced hiker, is found at the bottom of a remote cliff in the Peak District of England called Cloud Drop, all the signs--including the Sorry note he left behind for his wife, Beth--point to suicide.

Plans for the funeral begin, but Beth cannot accept that her husband took his own life. As she sets out to discover what really happened, Beth soon realises that the safe, protected life she thought she had was nothing of the sort, and that Oscar had kept many secrets from her--secrets that involve even close family and old friends. It turns out that he had enemies--and perhaps she did too, even if she didn't know it.

As the troubling revelations keep coming, Beth has to focus on solving one mystery if she is to reclaim her own life: who killed Oscar Lomas?

Review

Ok so this was a bit good!

It’s dark and deals with a lot of issues including the five stages of grief. The characters come alive off the page and seriously you really don’t know what is going to happen next.

Beth, our main goes through a real transformation, refusing to believe what is out in front of her after years of being in everyone else’s shadow. Molly is your classic redemption arc but what I really liked is how everyone, even down to the deceive investigating the case is intertwined with each other.

The only thing was I did guess the twist before it was revealed but that’s what I get for reading crime thrillers for years!

All in all I really liked this and would definitely end more from this author.

Beth Lomas thought she knew her husband. But this one small word, written on the back of a discarded envelope and left on their kitchen table convinces the police that Oscar took his own life. As the police announce that they are not seeking anyone else in connection with Oscar's death, Beth is convinced that there is more to the story. As she sets out to discover what really happened, Beth uncovers shocking truths about the man she thought she knew better than anyone.

The pace is fast, it's full of twists and the plotline is gripping. I could not put it down. The characters are well developed but not all likeable. It's tense, filled with secrets, lies and it's well written. Beth doesn't know who she can trust anymore. There's plenty of suspects to choose from. The ending is finished off satisfactory. All the loose ends are tied up. This is a most enjoyable read.

This book was okay. The plot was fair, most of the characters were not very likable, and I didn't really warm to the story. It didn't really click with me, but I hope other readers enjoy it more.

Ben has the perfect marriage with her husband Oscar. But when his dead body is found at the bottom of Cloud drop with a note, the police claim it as a suicide. Beth has misgivings of the verdict. Why would her husband commit suicide where they are both happy in their marriage and they have two great kids?
When also the cabin at the bottom of the garden is burgled and Beth sees someone watching her from the bottom of the garden, she knows something is not right. She instead thinks that Oscar has been murdered and she goes out of her way to find out the truth. But when she investigates, she finds out she does not know her husband at all. And finds out that her marriage wasn’t solid as she thought.
Thank you, Random house for a copy What his wife knew by Joe Jakeman. This is a tense cleverly written thriller which I really enjoyed. This had well developed characters but weren’t that likeable and some great twists in the story especially the one at the end. 4 stars from me.

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

Beth is a mother of two teenagers, and has a husband who has just committed suicide. There was a note left on the table that just read “Sorry”. Despite all the evidence pointing towards suicide, Beth is adamant he didn’t commit suicide, and he either fell or was pushed. As Beth presses into her husbands life further, she becomes aware that she didn’t know him as well as she thought she did, and also that everyone around her seems to be harbouring secrets too.

I loved this book. This author always writes excellent stores, which are highly engaging. There’s twists and turns throughout this whole book, and it really does make you question how well you think you know those around you. The characters were all relatable in their own way, and the author writes them so you feel you personally know them. I was really rooting for Beth, even though sometimes her direction was questionable. The ending was satisfying and tied up the story nicely. Would recommend.
