This book is such a great reference! It's not completely comprehensive, but it has quite a few current and past pride flags, as well as information about the colors chosen and the history of how the flags were designed. It's amazing now, and it would be great if this book were updated every five or ten years to keep it current. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to learn more about the pride flags. The information alongside the images really helped it to stick in my memory, and my kids love this resource, too!

I could see this being very helpful in a classroom setting as it includes 17 flags that this age group may not have heard about before.

While I typically don't read many picture books or books marketed towards younger audiences, this book caught my interest so I wanted to give it a read!

The Big Book of Pride Flags provides an easy to understand and explain introduction to the many colors that define the LGBTQ community! It would be a great starting point for parents or teachers to use to talk to children about queer identities and pride month. With education about the LGBTQ community under attack, books like this are more important now than ever before.

Knowing our history has always been super important. Now Jessica Kingsley Publishers has made an LGBTQIA+ History book for all ages that is in equal parts cute,informative ,inclusive and deeply deeply important. This book is just gorgeous. Jessica Kingsley Publishers chose 17 flags to give everyone a good look at different aspects of the LGBTQ+ family. There are all the major flags and some you may not have seen before and honestly I almost cried at how inclusive and beautiful this book is. Even the endpapers containing the 17 flags are joyful.

All the illustrations by Jem Milton are gorgeous and everyone of all backgrounds seem to have been included. It is really powerful to see all these flags on a page and to hear about the creators. To see all the history especially of the newer flags mainly created on the internet treated with respect and care is so important and powerful.

The drawings are beautiful, the writing is easy to understand and informative and the whole book has a brilliant sense of joy. This is the perfect book to introduce anyone inntroducing young children to the flags and different identites of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Honestly this book is just so beautiful and just means so much to me. I wish I'd got to see something like this as a child and I am so pleased that children wil have the opportunity to see this book and feel included too.

i usually don't read children's books but as a part of LGBTQ+ community, i wanted to see what this was about and i am glad that i read this one. it is a nice way to teach children about pride flags.

Beautifully illustrated and wonderfully informative! A staple for any young person’s library! I can’t recommend highly enough.

A delightful non-fiction picture book for the younger end of middle-grade! Each double-page spread features a different Pride flag, and some simple information about its history, who designed it (if known), and what the different colours mean. The colourful, celebratory illustrations – by a non-binary illustrator – feature a diverse array of people, including a woman wearing hijab, a wheelchair user, and a
range of people of different ethnicities.

This is a really lovely, beautifully illustrated introduction to the different pride flags and what they mean. Although it’s aimed at children it’s also a good tool for adults as well who are looking to build their understanding of different identities that come under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella.

The difficulty with a book such as this is that there are lot of constantly evolving nuances around some of these identities so some of it was perhaps oversimplified. It also would have been nice to have more about the flags beyond just the colours, for example going into details about the chevrons. But overall this is a lovely book that will be a great resource for many families.

This was an adorable book. It gives the basic history of every pride flag where applicable in a way that children can understand, as well as brief but clear explanations of the identities that these flags represent.

There were a few identities that I feel were not explained accurately, such as lesbian (I am one), but there is no malicious wording or anything inherently bad about these definitions. I still feel they are an amazing way to teach young people about queerness, and I would have loved to have a book like this in my life when I was still growing.

My favourite parts were the gorgeous art style and graphic design, with an interesting variety that were all bright, colourful and very attractive to the viewing eye. Also, the learning guide and the DIY pride flag activities at the beginning of the book! I will definitely be buying this for my younger brothers when it's published, as they will have a load of fun.

Overall, would definitely recommend for a fun and happy read, especially if you have eager-to-learn kids in your life!

Such a great book. We loved reading it together and then we did lots of research around the subject.
It was really informative and my kids them re read it them selves after wards.

This simple to understand book not only has the various Pride flags, what they mean, where they came from, and what each flag represents. I will say the very first few pages and the last pages both about the standard rainbow flag and its newest version, rainbow with diamond is completely repeated. There was no new information there, it could be cut at the end. But other than that, this is a great resource.

LOVE LOVE LOVE! This is an incredible book and such an important one! I love that this is equal parts beautiful as it is educational. I hope this becomes part of people's must-gift books for baby showers and all home libraries!

Loving this simple but inclusive guide to pride symbolism. This is a great book for all ages, yes even adults! I also love that it explains how we have grown in the queer community to encompass an ever growing and evolving number of identities, and how the progress flag has something for each of us. This also includes an opportunity for readers to engage with their own identity or create a flag that reflects them. What a wonderful way to get young kids to connect with self exploration and identity! The illustrations are lovely and charming and the descriptions give just enough info for a read aloud or independent reading options. Love to see this kind of inclusivity!

This vibrant and beautiful book by Jessica Kingsley and illustrated by Jem Milton clearly and concisely identifies each Pride flag in such an accessible way that eliminates any tired excuse an adult can make about children being too young to learn about gender. Fear of discomfort? Nope. You’ll feel silly even thinking that once you read this. It’s not sugarcoated or too childish either. It’s straightforward, yet engaging.

The book covers the history of each Pride flag, their names, the symbolism behind the colors, and reasons behind any changes made to select flags. Each flag is also accompanied by a simple description of the corresponding gender identities and an explanation of the associated sexual orientations. Finally, the book ends with a reading guide of questions for discussion, and a space to create your own Pride flag! I love how this particular feature encourages readers to take pride in however they identify rather than allow it to be defined for them.

But why do kids need to know all of this? Respecting and valuing how they see themselves builds self esteem and confidence, it promotes their individuality without imposing limits on their expression, and makes them feel unconditionally loved and accepted as part of the societal norm, not divergent from it. Any issue you have with that is your issue, and yours alone.

Although many Pride flags are covered, they’re not all in this book. At the very least, I think the Two Spirit Pride flag needs to be included. I shared this book with my daughter who is mixed-race Indigenous, and it’s important to see the intersectionality here. However, the selection is enough to normalize the types of conversations that need to begin at an early age.

I adore this book! It contains a total of 17 different LGBTQIA2S+ flags; who created them and when; what each colour of the flag represents; and the meaning of the sexuality/gender identify that the flag represents. Although this book doesn’t contain a complete collection of all of the pride flags, it is a great start to educating children on the many identities within the LGBTQIA2S+ community.

I highly recommend this book to people of all ages, I would love to see this in school and public libraries and in scholastic fairs. This is a great tool for learning for not only children but adults as well. I also loved the illustrations, they were very diverse and inclusive with BIPOC, disabled, Hijabi, and plus-size characters.

The author also includes a section of questions at the end of the book to fully engage the reader into thinking critically and getting involved with the book. They also included a page where the reader can create their own pride flag.

This was a perfect combination of colourful and inclusive visuals and short yet informative facts. As I was reading I was learning information I didn't know myself, and I felt as well that this book would be very accessible for kids to learn.

The Big Book of Pride Flags, Illustrated by Jim Milton, is the perfect book for Pride month. With inclusive artwork not only demonstrating the various LGBTQIA+ flags but also differently abled people and people of color. With a Reading Guide, other books of interest, and a blank flag for readers to create their own flag, it’s more than just a picture book about Pride flags - it’s a useful resource for parents, teachers, librarians, and doctors. The artwork is bright and beautiful, and will catch young children’s eyes while adults read the text, but it is engaging enough for older children, as well. It will be an excellent addition to bookshelves everywhere.

Very cute and informative book about all the types of flags and their meaning. I learned a thing or two and I think a lot of people will get different things out of it. It's also fun for kids as it is very colorful and the art is very nicely done.

Objectively, it’s a good book, with good explications about differents pride flags. But it’s really something for someone who doesn’t know anything about.
If you know the flags, their histories… it’s not enough. I would more informations, more flags. Here, it’s too basic for me.
But, I think it’s a good way to discover some of the most use pride flags. And permit to explain them to kids.
