Best Recipes from the Farmer's Wife Cookbook included simplistic dishes that are indicative of the times in which they were created. A monthly magazine from 1893 to 1939, practicality ruled the kitchen and not many ingredients were easily accessible. For instance, spices back in those days included salt and pepper, but not much else. Some recipes were updated to include convenience foods like store bought broth, which would not have been readily available. This was not a positive change and cheapened the recipes somewhat. There were too many recipes per page and not enough photographs. Overall, I did not enjoy the cookbook as much as I had hoped.

Listed below are the recipe sections and some of the standout dishes.

Salads, Sandwiches, and Picnic Fare: Boston Baked Beans; Macaroni and Cheese; Deviled Eggs

Soups and Stews: Corn Chowder; Beef Stew; Lentil Stew; A Stew of Distinction

Breakfasts, Breads, and Biscuits: Sour Milk Griddle Cakes; Spoon Corn Bread; Eggs in Potato Nests; Butterhorn Rolls

Meat, Fish, and Poultry: Meatballs; Hot Pot; Pot Roast; Swedish Meatballs; Roast Pork and Apples; Chicken and Dumplings

Vegetables: Glazed Carrots; Baked Spinach with Cheese; Fried Green Tomatoes; Potato Puff

Sauces: Spiced Cranberries; White Sauce; Horseradish Sauce

Desserts: Brown Betty; Bread Pudding; Apple Crisp; Cranberry Pudding

Cookies and Bars: Ginger Drops; Oatmeal Cookies; Coconut Flake Macaroons

Cakes and Doughnuts: White Cake with Cherry Frosting; German Apple Cake; Funnel Cakes; Pineapple Upside Down Cake

Pies and Tarts: Michigan Cherry Pie; Sweet Potato Pie; Southern Apple Dumplings; Apple Tart

Beverages: Fruit Lemonade

This book contains easy to follow along recipes. The few recipe that we made we loved! The recipes are broken down easily and are well organized. The mac and cheese recipe was my favorite one to make. It was a huge hit with my family.

I would definitely look for more from this author.

I'm lucky to have some handwritten recipes from my grandmother and aunts. This cookbook contains several of their recipes and it was exciting to see what else was available. These recipes were published originally in Midwestern America’s Farmer’s Wife magazine between 1893 and 1939.
They are simple and timeless. No fancy ingredients, just wholesome well cooked food. I would recommend that to anyone buying a cookbook for a newlywed or someone starting out on their own. Easy to read and well organized. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Although I must say that reading this one on the NetGalley Shelf App was a bit annoying I did find it quite a quirky, fun and enjoyable cookbook (and I love cookbooks). It was interesting knowing that these recipes came from a monthly magazine that ran from 1893-1939 and that even today these recipes can and will work.

I love looking back at the foods and the way people lived in times before my own as I love to see how food and life has evolved and how it has changed yet some things stay the same. This isn't just a cookbook but a bit of a history lesson, a fun one at that.

The recipes are easy to read, easy to follow and there is something for everyone. Recipes ranging from those you know and love (Mac & Cheese, Fried Green Tomatoes and Oatmeal Cookies) to some I have not heard of like Bohemian Dumplings and Peach Omelette.

Fun, tasty and so very interesting and I can't wait to make a few of these great recipes and see if they still work!

Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for the ARC of Best Recipes from the Farmer's Wife Cookbook. This is my personal review.
I am a cookbook fanatic! This is going to be added to my collection as soon as it is published on January 25, 2022.
The recipes in this cookbook are fabulous. They are easy to follow and have ingredients that we all have in our kitchens. The illustrations will make your mouth water when you see them.
The book is divided into several sections with each being filled with so many recipes that you will want to make.
I found so many recipes I can not wait to make. Some of them being Scalloped Potatoes, Fruit Cobbler, Apple Crisp, Bread Pudding, Sandbakkels, and so many others.
I would recommend to anyone who loves making easy recipes. I felt like I was looking into my Mother’s recipes box.

Homesteading and cottagecore are having a moment and this book is ideal. Recipes both sweet and savoury using easily obtainable ingredients. The photographs are very appealing - there isn't a photograph for every recipe but as this enabled the inclusion of many more recipes, it didn't bother me. Recommended.

Well this is a beautifully simple cookbook that everyone can use. It is filled with classics such as Beef Stew and Biscuits. There are very few recipes that you will find surprising in her (the closest I was found was Orange Biscuits), but none of these will disappoint. I think this is a great gift to give anyone just starting out on their own because it has all of the classic recipes they are familiar with. A perfect cookbook for those jumping into the culinary world for the first time or for those who need a hint of nostalgia on their cookbook shelf.

I received an ARC ebook copy from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Tried and true recipes that are classics for a reason. There are no gimmicks or tricks that replace straight up goodness. When you hear about dishes like your grandma used to make, you’ll find them in here. This is a cookbook that I want on my bookshelf for years to come. It captures the dishes of years gone by that should never be forgotten. I want to gift this to those who are just starting out in the kitchen. It provides ease, simplicity, and guaranteed good food. I’ve never been aware of previous editions of this treasure, but you can believe that this will always have a place in my kitchen now.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.

Without a doubt this will be one the most well loved cookbooks in my home. This is filled with recipes I grew up with my granny making that sadly passed with her. Now I can introduce them to my kids.

I can’t wait to start working my way through this book.

I received an Arc, Best Recipes from the Farmer's Wife Cookbook, by Beverly Hudson, Kari Cornell, and Melinda Keefe. This cookbook is filled with blue ribbon recipes. Some of the recipes are: potato soup, baking powder biscuits, Texas hash, and many many more.

This is a beautiful trip down memory lane!

"Best Recipes from the Farmer's Wife Cookbook" was first published in 1893. This is a revised version with full color photographs of the best dishes from that cookbook. This book is a vintage recipe treasure with cooking just like my grandma used to make. Lost recipes for how to make a homemade chess pie, banana loaf, chicken fried steak, buttermilk fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, beef stew, fried green tomatoes, strawberry shortcake, potato soup, and (my personal favorite) chicken and dumplings. This cookbook has tons old family recipes that bring back the loving feeling of being in the kitchen with your mama cooking up a family meal. After all, cooking is not just about the food, it's about the love, family, friends, and good memories that go with it.

I could spend all day just reading this awesome book before I even start cooking! I collect cookbooks and plan to add this to my library to pass down to my kids and grandkids when its published on January 25, 2022.

Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group- Harvard Common Press, for allowing me to review this outstanding cookbook.

This was such a sweet trip down memory lane. My mother had cookbooks very similar to this when I was a child, and I would spend hours just reading the cookie sections. While Best Recipes from the Farmer's Wife Cookbook does have many delicious savory classic recipes like Swedish meatballs and Stuffed Pork Lion, Id have to say i was most impressed with the cookie, cakes and other dessert recipes. So many tried and true classic recipes!

I highly recommend Best Recipes from the Farmer's Wife Cookbook to anyone looking for a great classic American recipe cookbook.

This is an interesting cook book.

Nargi notes that this book has been adapted to be a bit more contemporary, but the recipes are still largely old-fashioned Americana. The ingredients in each recipe are written in cups instead of metric and aren't written in steps so much as a single paragraph or two describing how to make the food. There aren't a lot of pictures included in this recipe book.

There's a variety of recipes in this book from sauces to breads to desserts. Overall it's an interesting look into the past and how we can tie it to the present.

This Farmers wife cookbook is a recipe book full of delicious recipes from a monthly magazine called The Farmer’s Wife, published between 1893-1939.
It has an introduction about this popular magazine and why it was so popular and what else was in it. It seems to have been an important part of a woman’s livelihood back in the day. I found in informative and helpful.
It has many categories to pick from such as meat, salad, desserts, breakfasts and so much more. It’s full of comforting, yummy recipes and has 45 full color photos.
I felt like I could make everything in it and it brought a nostalgia to my grandparents. I really enjoyed these historical recipes and will keep it in my kitchen to make my favorite recipes from my past.
