This revised, four-color edition of The Farmer’s Wife Cookbook features country-kitchen recipes that appeared in Midwestern America’s Farmer’s Wife magazine between 1893 and 1939.

Beloved by home cooks since the magazine was first published, the recipes resonate now more than ever as many of us—from the countryside, city, and in between—return from quick meals on the go to slow, scratch cooking; fresh and wholesome ingredients (often homegrown, self-made, or from the farmer’s market); and the tradition of Sunday dinners and eating together with family and friends.

Best Recipes from the Farmer’s Wife Cookbook brings together the most popular, easy-to-follow recipes and variations along with dozens of menus that originated in farm kitchens nationwide and appeared on the pages of the magazine over its publication around the start of the twentieth century. This new edition is illustrated with color photographs and completely redesigned to appeal to a modern-day cook who wants to bring the warmth and family of the Farmer’s Wife to their own kitchen.Recipes include:

Without a doubt this will be one the most well loved cookbooks in my home. This is filled with recipes I grew up with my granny making that sadly passed with her. Now I can introduce them to my kids.

I can’t wait to start working my way through this book.

This is a beautiful trip down memory lane!

"Best Recipes from the Farmer's Wife Cookbook" was first published in 1893. This is a revised version with full color photographs of the best dishes from that cookbook. This book is a vintage recipe treasure with cooking just like my grandma used to make. Lost recipes for how to make a homemade chess pie, banana loaf, chicken fried steak, buttermilk fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, beef stew, fried green tomatoes, strawberry shortcake, potato soup, and (my personal favorite) chicken and dumplings. This cookbook has tons old family recipes that bring back the loving feeling of being in the kitchen with your mama cooking up a family meal. After all, cooking is not just about the food, it's about the love, family, friends, and good memories that go with it.

I could spend all day just reading this awesome book before I even start cooking! I collect cookbooks and plan to add this to my library to pass down to my kids and grandkids when its published on January 25, 2022.

Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group- Harvard Common Press, for allowing me to review this outstanding cookbook.

This was such a sweet trip down memory lane. My mother had cookbooks very similar to this when I was a child, and I would spend hours just reading the cookie sections. While Best Recipes from the Farmer's Wife Cookbook does have many delicious savory classic recipes like Swedish meatballs and Stuffed Pork Lion, Id have to say i was most impressed with the cookie, cakes and other dessert recipes. So many tried and true classic recipes!

I highly recommend Best Recipes from the Farmer's Wife Cookbook to anyone looking for a great classic American recipe cookbook.

This Farmers wife cookbook is a recipe book full of delicious recipes from a monthly magazine called The Farmer’s Wife, published between 1893-1939.
It has an introduction about this popular magazine and why it was so popular and what else was in it. It seems to have been an important part of a woman’s livelihood back in the day. I found in informative and helpful.
It has many categories to pick from such as meat, salad, desserts, breakfasts and so much more. It’s full of comforting, yummy recipes and has 45 full color photos.
I felt like I could make everything in it and it brought a nostalgia to my grandparents. I really enjoyed these historical recipes and will keep it in my kitchen to make my favorite recipes from my past.
Thanks Voyageur Press via NetGalley.

Although I must say that reading this one on the NetGalley Shelf App was a bit annoying I did find it quite a quirky, fun and enjoyable cookbook (and I love cookbooks). It was interesting knowing that these recipes came from a monthly magazine that ran from 1893-1939 and that even today these recipes can and will work.

I love looking back at the foods and the way people lived in times before my own as I love to see how food and life has evolved and how it has changed yet some things stay the same. This isn't just a cookbook but a bit of a history lesson, a fun one at that.

The recipes are easy to read, easy to follow and there is something for everyone. Recipes ranging from those you know and love (Mac & Cheese, Fried Green Tomatoes and Oatmeal Cookies) to some I have not heard of like Bohemian Dumplings and Peach Omelette.

Fun, tasty and so very interesting and I can't wait to make a few of these great recipes and see if they still work!

I'm lucky to have some handwritten recipes from my grandmother and aunts. This cookbook contains several of their recipes and it was exciting to see what else was available. These recipes were published originally in Midwestern America’s Farmer’s Wife magazine between 1893 and 1939.
They are simple and timeless. No fancy ingredients, just wholesome well cooked food. I would recommend that to anyone buying a cookbook for a newlywed or someone starting out on their own. Easy to read and well organized. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for the ARC of Best Recipes from the Farmer's Wife Cookbook. This is my personal review.
I am a cookbook fanatic! This is going to be added to my collection as soon as it is published on January 25, 2022.
The recipes in this cookbook are fabulous. They are easy to follow and have ingredients that we all have in our kitchens. The illustrations will make your mouth water when you see them.
The book is divided into several sections with each being filled with so many recipes that you will want to make.
I found so many recipes I can not wait to make. Some of them being Scalloped Potatoes, Fruit Cobbler, Apple Crisp, Bread Pudding, Sandbakkels, and so many others.
I would recommend to anyone who loves making easy recipes. I felt like I was looking into my Mother’s recipes box.

Homesteading and cottagecore are having a moment and this book is ideal. Recipes both sweet and savoury using easily obtainable ingredients. The photographs are very appealing - there isn't a photograph for every recipe but as this enabled the inclusion of many more recipes, it didn't bother me. Recommended.

Well this is a beautifully simple cookbook that everyone can use. It is filled with classics such as Beef Stew and Biscuits. There are very few recipes that you will find surprising in her (the closest I was found was Orange Biscuits), but none of these will disappoint. I think this is a great gift to give anyone just starting out on their own because it has all of the classic recipes they are familiar with. A perfect cookbook for those jumping into the culinary world for the first time or for those who need a hint of nostalgia on their cookbook shelf.

I received an ARC ebook copy from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Tried and true recipes that are classics for a reason. There are no gimmicks or tricks that replace straight up goodness. When you hear about dishes like your grandma used to make, you’ll find them in here. This is a cookbook that I want on my bookshelf for years to come. It captures the dishes of years gone by that should never be forgotten. I want to gift this to those who are just starting out in the kitchen. It provides ease, simplicity, and guaranteed good food. I’ve never been aware of previous editions of this treasure, but you can believe that this will always have a place in my kitchen now.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.

This is such an awesome cookbook. I love the simple, old school recipes inside this book. They’re all very user friendly, and with ingredients anyone can find. These are things you would imagine your grandma making for family parties. Definitely check this one out.

Were you lucky enough to inherit your family's recipes? Or perhaps you didn't but are searching for your own foodie connection to the past. Either way, this collection of recipes from The Farmer's Wife Cookbook, first published between 1893 and 1939, will help you create good honest food that's passed the test of time.

The combination of vintage recipes sprinkled with sweet little vintage clipart, set alongside beautiful contemporary food photography, conveys the message that recipes from the past can be relevant in today's kitchens.

I enjoy creating meals the old-fashioned way and I didn't expect to learn too many new tricks from this cookbook, but I was pleasantly surprised. Tapioca in meatloaf? Who knew? Brown sugar in Fried Green Tomatoes? Tell me more. Snickerdoodles with *gasp* walnuts and raisins? Am I brave enough to try that? Perhaps. I think it's time for some old-fashioned new-to-me kitchen adventures!

My thanks to authors Beverly Hudson, Kari Cornell and Melinda Keefe, Quarto Publishing Group, and NetGalley for allowing me to read a digital advance review copy of this book. This review is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Best Recipes from the Farmer's Wife Cookbook shoew us just how much cooking has changed since our grandmother’s day or the early 1900s, pre World War II days. The only spices were salt and pepper, cheese was always cheddar and processed foods didn’t exist. Even some measurements were different, many ingredients were listed by pound.

These recipes are all easy to prepare and sound delicious. Organized by traditional category, they include breakfasts, bread, biscuits, vegetables, cookies, cakes beverages and more. My favorites are all the soups, the biscuits, Smothered Chicken, Potato Dumplings and all the cookies. The recipes are highlighted by gorgeous photographs and hand illustrated drawings. This is a cookbook that any home cook will enjoy adding to his/her collection! 5 stars.

Thank you to NetGalley and Beverly Hudson, Kari Cornell and Melinda Keefe for this ARC.

I’m pretty obsessed with vintage cookbooks (I also have a vintage cookware collection habit, but that’s a story for a different day); I love finding them and collecting them, I love reading them. I will sit and read Mrs Beeton’s for an enjoyable and relaxing comfort read. So, please believe when I write just how thrilled I was to read an advance copy of this.

I literally let out a little squeal of excitement when I read the introductory tag for this cookbook, “This revised, four-color edition of The Farmer’s Wife Cookbook features country-kitchen recipes that appeared in Midwestern America’s Farmer’s Wife magazine between 1893 and 1939.”

A cleanly laid out cookbook, with vintage style graphics and some full color photographs, this is broken up into sections - there’s Salads, Sandwiches, and Picnic Fare, Soups and Stews, Breakfasts, Breads, and Biscuits, Meat, Poultry, and Fish, Vegetables, Sauces, Desserts, Cookies and Bars, Cakes and Doughnuts, Pies and Tarts, and Beverages. Each recipe is listed with the accompanying month and year the recipe appeared in the Farmer’s Wife magazine.

There’s a lot in here, I kept looking over it and I kept finding more recipes that I’m really looking forward to trying. Best Recipes from the Farmer’s Wife Cookbook is a fantastic all-around classic cookbook, and note for vegans: many of the desserts and breads look to be easily veganized.

This is a wonderful collection of traditional American recipes. The recipes are well written and have lovely photos so readers will have an idea of what the finished product should look like. The recipes represent a wide slice of Americana, covering most of the United States. It's fun to look at the book and reminisce about the way we used to eat.

This book contains easy to follow along recipes. The few recipe that we made we loved! The recipes are broken down easily and are well organized. The mac and cheese recipe was my favorite one to make. It was a huge hit with my family.

I would definitely look for more from this author.

I received a copy of this cook book through NetGalley, all thoughts are my own.

Thank you to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group for a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!

I really loved the vintage vibe of this cookbook -- this definitely felt like a cookbook that would be passed down through generations from your grandmother! The simple recipes taken straight from the early 1900's, the incredibly easy to follow format, and the clean, farmable aesthetic that carried throughout the entire book! I think this book is great for someone like me who has very little experience cooking as the recipes are surprisingly easy to follow and require very few ingredients and steps, despite being published over one hundred years ago. This is a recipe book of basic dishes, all home cooking and comfort food inspired, which I think is such a staple for beginning or even more advanced cooks to have in their rotation for reference!

That being said, the reason I'm rating this book a 3.5 (rounded up to 4) because the book didn't necessarily blow me away or inspire me to cook anything from browsing through it, which is one of the things I really look for in cookbooks as someone who doesn't LOVE cooking on the day to day. The recipes are definitely appealing since they are so essential, simple, and basic, but I didn't feel inclined to pull out my pots and pans and whip something up right away. This is more of a cookbook I would use as a reference if I couldn't find one of my grandma's recipes, or in case I needed a very simple recipe for a side dish or dressing, etc.

I would recommend this as a good staple for a starting kitchen, or perhaps a gift for an older family member!

This is a beautifully done cookbook with hearty, homestyle dishes that conjures memories from years past. Growing up in Central PA with a large population of Dutch and Amish, I appreciate the classic recipes like "German Potato Salad" which highlight some of the favorite dishes from my heritage. I liked the layout; the dividers between categories; and the pictures used throughout. I am very appreciative I got a chance to check out this book before it was published and can't wait to make many recipes through the long winter months!

One of my favorite pastimes has been reading cookbooks, especially those that belonged to my husband’s grandmother (who was born in 1912). Always a treat to read about the different popular foods people enjoyed. That is what makes this cookbook so unique. In an age where most are used to grabbing something commercially prepared, like frosting, here you have the opportunity to make something so simple from scratch. Plus getting back to preparing your own food is much healthier than eating a bunch of preservatives. I particularly enjoy reading how something was prepared decades ago versus how I make my own. For example, my potato salad is different from the one in this cookbook yet the German potato salad is the same. It gives me “food” for thought on how I could change up my recipes if I wished. Definitely a cookbook I can easily see taking prominence in my kitchen.
I received a free advanced reader copy from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing for the advanced reader copy of this beautiful new cookbook. Editor Beverly Hudson does a superb job at culling out classic recipes from the magazine Farmer's Wife, a publication that printed reader recipes from 1893-1939. Recipes ranged from practical to fanciful, and are accompanied by many mouth-watering photographs. Loved getting all these new ideas for recipes..especially the yummy desserts. Perfect cookbook for a beginner chef, or someone looking for classic go-to recipes. Highly recommend.

What a fun cookbook! Best Recipes from the Farmer's Wife Cookbook: Over 250 Blue-Ribbon Recipes presents recipes from the Farmer’s Wife Magazine between 1893 and 1939. Each recipe gives the date it appeared in the magazine. Most of the recipes included are for comfort foods - nothing new, weird, or innovative – just good down-to-earth recipes that real people who like food actually will want to eat.

There are beautiful photographs of many of the recipes, and even though they are vintage, many of the recipes are mouthwatering and perfect for preparing in modern times. The recipes are written in traditional form and are easy-to-follow. Anyone, from beginning to advanced cooks, can make the recipes with picture-perfect results. Every time I peruse this cookbook, my queue for “must prepare” gets longer and longer. There is fun comfort food from US regions and cultures such as Perfect Gingerbread, Baked Potato Kugel, German Kuchen (Coffee Cake), Macaroni and Cheese, Cheese Straws, Rhode Island Johnny Cakes, and Brunswick Stew. There are luscious soups and salads, as well as cakes, pies and tarts, and puddings, cookies and bars. There are also old fashioned main dishes including casseroles, meatballs, meatloaf, baked ham and a stuffed pork loin.

For anyone who likes old fashioned recipes for comfort food, this is an excellent choice. There is something here for everyone, for weeknight dinners as well as fancier dinners for company.,

Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.

I am always excited to find cookbooks that include collections of recipes from a lot of different cooks. In this case, this collection is culled from recipes printed many years ago in the Farmers Wife Magazine. It is a delightful collection of nostalgic, delicious recipes that stand the test of time; many of these recipes are 100 years old or more. Even a few unfamiliar (to me) recipes that sound great, like Ginger Creams or Honey Drop Hermits. I already have a list of recipes to try. First up is the Apricot Oatmeal Cookies. Thank you, Net Galley.

I love a good recipe book and this one sure was great! Cannot wait to try out all of these recipes!! Definitely buying this book for myself and others!

What a fantastic historical cookbook!! As some one who lives in a rural area, many of these recipes are familiar to me, There is something so classic about North American farmhouse cooking. I love how you can read the influences of family heritage in the variations. German, English to name a few. The recipes produce our most treasured comfort foods. I love how they have only been modernized to allow these recipes to be understood and enjoyed by a wider audience of cooks but have not be modified to provide a more modern spin. I love to understand the root of some of our favourites, and while I sometimes enjoy a refreshed version, there really is nothing better than a true classic. I can't wait to get in my kitchen and start testing these out. The only problem I will have will be trying to decide which one to start with. This is a book that I will find myself reaching for frequently.

An excellent book with a lots of different easy to follow recipes with everyday ingredients. I liked the way there were clearly defined chapters and pictures to give you an idea of what the recipes should look like. I did find there was a lot of recipes with apples but I can imagine that in the era these recipes were from apples would be plentiful from trees grown by the farmers.

My sincere thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for a digital ARC of this title, in exchange for my honest review.
In today's current kitchen climate, many cooks are returning to tried and true cooking concepts and this cookbook is a lovely collection of perfectly comforting food. Warm and hearty dishes, filling breakfasts, tasty sweets, and simple ideas for a long day. This is a wonderful addition for anyone's cookbook collection, whether they are experienced or new to cooking. The introduction gives a brief history about how these recipes were originally collected, between 1893 - 1939, and tips on how to make them successful in today's kitchen. Plenty of classic recipes, that will be immediately recognized, are interspersed between older recipes that are not as recognized today. However, these lesser known recipes will quickly find their way into modern kitchens. This is absolutely a cookbook that will find its way on to my personal shelves after publication.

A compilation of recipes from a magazine of bygone days with most from the 1920s and early 1930s. A good mix of salads, soups, stews but with an emphasis on baked goods - cakes, pastries, pies, biscuits, cookies and so on. Very much of their time - basic ingredients and few spices, the odd bit of paprika, nutmeg, cinnamon. The recipes are straightforward and use whole foods, probably not much else around then other than cans, but they are clear and easy to understand. They are presented in a way that I hope would appeal to modern cooks although photographs are few and far between, so perhaps not. It's certainly not just for farmwife cooks, urbanites could learn a thing or two and it's always good to see a book with simple, plain food, easily and quickly made for the busy modern family. It would be a good book to start off a young cook - get the basics then add chilli and garlic! Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Harvard Common Press for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
