This was a gripping read that I couldn't ;put down. Well written with a compelling storyline and well developed and engaging characters. It was twisty and unpredictable and left me guessing until the end.

This book is a sequel to Pieces of Her, which has now been made into a Netflix series. I don't think I've read the first book but had just watched the series and didn't realise it was a sequel when I requested the book.
Andrea Oliver has just qualified as a US Marshal and is sent to do security detail while also investigating the brutal killing of Emily Vaughn, 40 years previously.
I have long been a fan of Karin Slaughter books and this was no different. It took a little while to get going but then I was hooked.

Girl Forgotten is a sequel to Karin Slaughter's 2018 book, Pieces of Her which has been made into a successful Netflix series.

Following on from events in Pieces of Her Andy, now preferring "Andrea" has qualified as a US Marshall and finds herself given the job of protecting a prominent Judge who has received death threats even before her graduation. While genuine the job is also cover for Andy to covertly investigate the 40 year-old murder of the Judge's daughter Emily, which stirs a Hornet's Nest of small town secrets.

Emily's tale is a tragic one, from a quiet girl with friends and great prospects she finds herself pregnant and ostracised by most of the town, including her former friends, before being brutally murdered and the story is told in 2 timelines, events leading to Emily's murder and Andy's hunt for her killer.

This is quite a grim read, there's some quite graphic violence and most of the people in Emily's young life are deeply unpleasant people with quite shocking attitudes towards women. Attitudes that Andy finds alive and well when she comes across the same people 4 decades later.

This is a great,if not particularly pleasant, book. plenty of twists and red herrings with the ending leaving potential for more in the series.

A sequel to the outstanding 'Pieces of Her', this book finds Andy embarking on a new career as a US Marshall and becoming embroiled in an investigation that gives her new insights into both hers and her mother's pasts. Things that irritated me about Andy's character make more sense and I love the way she is developing - she isn't a cliché; I'm assuming there will be more to come and I look forward to seeing how she evolves.
This book builds beautifully on the characters established in 'Pieces of Her' but is not reliant on that to create a thrilling, fast paced story with more than a few twists and red herrings along the way.
I have been a Karin Slaughter fan since around 2003 and already expect to love a book of hers before I even read the first word, but I feel as though this is an exceptional triumph and that her characters are all the more distinct and unique for the darkness inside of them. The new characters compliment and meld well with existing ones. Something I've always enjoyed about Karin Slaughter's books is how she never shies away from the raw brutality of a murder scene but still gives us such vulnerability and compassion around every victim and around her characters, we get it all - clear, violent, gritty as well as gentle and human.
Great book, thoroughly enjoyable read, exciting to the very last word.

I loved Pieces of Her and this second book in this series was a fabulous surprise.
US Marshal Andrea Oliver arrives in Longbill Beach to protect a judge, following death threats. She meets her new partner, Bible and together they help keep the family safe. But behind the scenes, Andrea is investigating a murder in the town from years ago - the judge's daughter, Emily. Forty years later it remains unsolved and Andrea has a vested interest in a conviction in the case.

As you may well have gathered, this story is focused primarily on Andrea, or Andy. Laura does feature, but not too much. With that said, I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline and like the direction this is heading in. The supporting characters were fabulous and kept me turning the pages. I do hope that Bible continues on in the series. Definitely another one I recommend, but read book 1 first. 4.5*

I'm a huge Karin Slaughter fan, and I have read most of her books over the years, so I was really excited to read this book! Here we have book 2 in the Andrea Oliver series, of which book 1 is called Pieces of Her. Pieces of Her is now a big, popular netflix show, which I have watched and really enjoyed. So, I was very happy to get stuck into book 2 to find out what happens next in Andrea's life.

In this book, Andrea has trained to become a United States Marshall, and her first job is to protect a judge who has been receiving death threats. The judge's daughter was raped years ago, and then while she was pregnant due to the rape, she was murdered. But who murdered her, and why is her Mum now receiving death threats?

We have two storylines going on throughout the book. One is set in the present time, with Andrea, her Mum Laura, her Dad Gordon, her on/off boyfriend Mike, Bible and Cussy (two new amazing characters who Andrea works closely with); and the other is set in the past, in 1982, where Emily, the daughter of the judge, is going through her earlier life as a teenager. Both storylines are fantastic, and really interesting. I was excited to keep reading, to find out who the murderer was. I had worked out who it was before the big reveal at the end, but I hadn't worked out who did the other thing that happened.

My favourite characters were Emily, Andrea, Mike, Bible and Gordon. All of the characters in the book are interesting, and they all have their good and bad points, which are fascinating to read about. This is a really fantastic book, which I thoroughly enjoyed, as it had so much suspense, family drama, high school drama, mystery, romance, twists, turns, shocks and everything you could ever need from a thriller/mystery/police story. I just loved it so much, and I can't wait for Girl, Forgotten to come out on netflix, and for Karin's next book, which I have heard is going to be about Will and Sara - yay!

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Karin slaughter Is a master at writing a masterful physiological thriller. They are always well written, with lots of twist and turns and lots of hidden depths. This one is exactly the same with great characters, and a deep dark twisted storyline.

Girl, Forgotten. Karin Slaughter. 5/5

Longbill Beach 1982, Emily Vaughn has a secret and by the end of her prom night she’ll be dead. Forty years later, her murder remains unsolved in a town that closed ranks.
Andrea Oliver arrives in town with a simple assignment, protect a judge receiving death threats. Only she knows this is a cover, her real assignment? Solve a forty year old murder.

Fresh from the Netflix adaption of Pieces of Her, Crime Thriller Queen, Karin Slaughter follows up with Girl, Forgotten where she returns to Andrea Oliver.
A new series from Slaughter is always a positive and this was a well paced thriller. Flickering timelines and a cast of morally bankrupt characters, this has all of Slaughters usual magic. A worthy read.

Thanks to #netgalley and #harpercollins for my AC of this one.

Awesome.
Longbill Beach, 1982. Emily Vaughn gets ready for prom night, the highlight of any high school experience. But Emily has a secret. And by the end of the evening, she will be dead. Forty years later, Emily’s murder remains unsolved. Her friends closed ranks, her family retreated inwards, the community moved on. But all that’s about to change.
Andrea Oliver arrives in town with a simple assignment: to protect a judge receiving death threats. But her assignment is a cover. Because, in reality, Andrea is here to find justice for Emily – and to uncover the truth before the killer decides to silence her too.
Karin slaughter always surprise me with her twisty Stories. Loved this one. I think everyone should read it.

* spoiler alert ** This book is good.
It's got a lot going on.
A cold crime, a character we've seen before.
A list of suspects that all seem fairly unlikeable, and a cult.
What's not to like?

For me though, it lacks Slaughters usual magic.
Her stand alone books don't tend to grab me the way her series do, and I'm sure Pieces of her wasn't a favourite of mine.
As I said at the beginning, this is a good book, I think I just expect too much of a favourite author.

Karin Slaughter is one of those authors who has always hovered around my to-be-read list but I have never really gotten into her books previously. I think one of my issues is that she is so prolific, I didn't really know where to start.

However I saw this on Netgalley and thought it's as good a place to start as any and I wasn't disappointed.

Andrea Oliver is a United States Marshall who has been assigned to protect a federal judge receiving death threats. The judge's daughter was also murdered a number of years ago and there is a connection to the case that interests Andrea. I won't give away too much as this may spoil the novel or previous novels too.

The story is told over two different timelines - the present day where Andrea is protecting the judge and trying to solve a decades old murder, and the past when we are told the tragic story of Emily's untimely death.

All in all the book was definitely enjoyable however I didn't race through it the way I normally would with books of this nature. That may just have been my mood but may also be a hint that it just didn't grab as much as I had hoped.

That said, the ending was satisfactory and wrapped the story up well. It also left it open for the series to continue and I will look out for the next novel in the series.

Thanks to Netgalley and HarperCollins UK, HarperFiction, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Emily Vaughn is an ostracised teenager in small-town Delaware. Her formerly close friendship group have shunned her, and she is brutally murdered on the night of her prom.

Forty years later, her murder is still unsolved but when newly-appointed US Marshal Andrea Oliver is sent to guard her mother - who has been receiving death threats - a very cold case may just begin to heat up.

This is a really good book that leaves you guessing at every turn. Whilst I did guess part of the reveal, the final revelation took me by surprise! 5*.

Karin Slaughter used to be an automatic buy for me with her earlier books up to about Cop Town - since then, there have been some misses and, sadly, this is one of them.

If I'd known this was a sequel to Pieces of Her featuring the bland yet irritating Andrea and her mother, Laura, I'd probably have passed.

Switch off your credibility radar as the idea of a US Marshall investigating her own father to prevent his parole is just silly, and add in all kinds of personal relationships, small town secrets, blackmail, corruption, rape, secret sex...

I could have gone with it if there had been strong characters to hook me into the story but there are no replacements here for Sara Linton or Will Trent.

Fans of Pieces of Her, though, may love it.

An unputdownable story from an author at the top of her game. Absolutely breathtaking.
Andrea Oliver is qualified as a US Marshall for only hours before she is appointed to protect a judge who has been receiving death threats. As an additional complication, the judge lives in the hometown of her father, a cult leader, whose parole is coming up. She is given a case to solve, which might prevent his parole being granted, but small towns hold big secrets.

Brilliantly plotted and intensely absorbing, the characters are vivid and compelling, and the storyline completely engrossing.
