Developing and creating a garden to provide food for my kitchen has been an ongoing project/dream for me, so I was really excited to read Four-Season Food Gardening. The book was full of great information about planning your garden. The pictures were beautiful and informative. A lot of times, gardening books include photos that just build an aesthetic, but dela Llana included pictures that explained root growth, watering techniques and the cycle of plants from planting to growth to harvest. One of the greatest tools included in the book was the Container Size Chart. I always have trouble with figuring out what to plant deck gardens in, so I went out and bought a copy of Four Season Food Gardening for my bookshelf so I had this specific chart available at my fingertips! Loved it!

Thank you so much to net galley for sending me a copy of this book. I think this book would be much better suited to a beginner! Great information!

I am a complete and total novice of any sort of gardening, much less of food gardening, and I really appreciated the initial chapters which served as a very thorough intro into planting materials and tools, temperatures, etc. I also really appreciated the way the author was very clearly invested in the efficiency of a personal garden; much detail was provided so that the reader can get as much use out of their materials and space as they possibly can. I found the section on vertical gardening extremely helpful. If there were one book--a sort of primer--that I would recommend for anyone getting started gardening, or even one that I would purchase as a gift, it would be this one! Loved!

I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. Excellent gardening book for those looking to garden past the spring and summer months.

Most in-depth, completely understandable book on year round gardening I’ve read. So much information and not overly complicated. Very very helpful!

This was a really great read. It went into a lot of detail with a lot of great color photos. Unfortunately, my ADE has stopped working and has corrupted all of the books I've downloaded. I tried multiple times to download it again and it's now archived, so I never got to finish reading it and won't be able to publicly review it. What I saw was excellent though, and I wish it had been offered on kindle so I could have read it all.

If you're interested in growing vegetables, herbs and/or fruits, this would be a great guide. Not only does it give easy-to-follow guidelines for growing in all seasons, but it also has all the gardening basics a novice gardener needs (e.g., how to select a garden site, common pests, or selecting a fertilizer). The book is beautifully illustrated with lots of photographs, and the basic information is organized into sidebars or tables. The instructions are clear and comprehensive, yet are organized in a way that makes them very accessible for the novice. The last portion of the book also contains profiles of common vegetables and herbs. Excellent reference!

Lovely, informative book. Great tips and excellent photographs. Just what I needed to help with my first vegetable patch.

Unfortunately I had a problem with the download. I downloaded it and I was able to look through it but then I closed the window and when I tried to open it again I wasn't able to. But I'll write my review based on what I was able to see. It's a nice companion showing you what to garden each season. I wish I had been able to read each one with more time. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review

Four-Season Food Gardening is an interesting and fact-filled collection of tips and techniques for extending harvest and culture for edible crops, in some cases over the entire year. Due out 15th March 2022 from Quarto on their Cool Springs imprint, it's 192 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.

Author Misilla dela Llana spent her early childhood in the Philippines and grew up surrounded by mango, guava, and coconut trees and a tropical climate. Moving to the US meant that many of the specific fruits and vegetables her family was used to weren't viable in her new home, but many others were.

She does a good job of explaining lots of creative ways to extend growing seasons and plan succession plantings very carefully to maximize production even into deep winter. Many cole crops and root vegetables even become sweeter and tastier with hard freezes as long as they're protected by polytunnels or cold frames.

The author has included a selection of plant profiles for various herbs and vegetables which are suited to extended season growing. Profiles include botanical (Latin) name as well as common names and a color photo of the plant/seeds. Planting suggestions, spacing, culture, and habits are included in highlighted text boxes in the profile.

Five stars. Well written and useful. This would be a good selection for public and school library, gardening groups, smallholders, suburban/urban gardeners, and the home library.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Enjoyable book with a wealth of information for starting a garden. I was pleasantly surprised to learn some new to me, gardening tips. I’d never heard of the Hugelkultur method of bed for a garden and it’s kind of like a lasagna garden. I can’t wait to try it. So an easy read with some really great tips. Five stars!

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher to look at and voluntarily left a review!

You may think that gardening is a spring and summer activity. Four-season Food Gardening is out to prove you wrong.

From planning your garden to specific tasks for each season, the book includes all you need to know to keep your fruit, vegetable and herb gardens going all year long. There is also an extensive section on their favorite crops. Each crop has a full color picture or two, some history and instructions for growing it in your own garden.

I learned a lot of new edible food gardening information in Four-season Food Gardening! I love the taste of bok choy in restaurant meals. Now I know how to grow dwarf varieties in only 30 days in containers. I also would have never thought that winter crops like potatoes can be overwintered or even plucked from the ground during winter. There were surprises in the crop section too. Claytonia can be planted in basically any soil or location but is not invasive. It tastes like spinach but is much less finicky. It’s the perfect winter crop and may be a perennial here since winter temps rarely go below 20.

If you want to garden all year or are curious about new crops, Four-season Food Gardening is the perfect book to help you achieve your goal. 5 stars!

Thanks to Cold Springs Press and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

What a little gem of a book!

I live in a region with cold winters, so I'm most interested in looking for ways to extend my harvest, but without having to invest in bank-breaking supplies. Four-Season Food Gardening gives some excellent tips on how to do that. It's such an easy and accessible book, split into each season and what to grow. I absolutely love the photography and helpful charts (most specifically the one that identifies what containers to plant certain species in).

I can't think of a better beginner's guide I've seen recently than this one, and I can see myself coming back to it again and again. Highly recommended.

Thank you to Quarto Books for giving me the opportunity to review this through NetGalley.

Short read. I don't know that I would recommend it for true beginners but it is a great source of inspiration to the novice and intermediate gardener who want to expand and build upon their knowledge.

This is a amazing gardening book for beginners! Thankfully it doesn’t read like a text book like other gardening books I’ve tried. It includes everything between garden buildings methods, healthy soil, pests, and when to plant what. I also really enjoyed the use of lists and bullet points. Definitely worth getting.
