Description

Four-Season Food Gardening hands you all the know-how you need to make growing food 365 days a year your new superpower!

Unlike most other vegetable gardening books on the market, this one approaches the subject through the lens of what you can grow during each of the four seasons, even if you live in a cold climate. Using season-extension techniques, such as cold frames, mini hoop houses, and thick mulches, combined with a thoughtful mixture of annual and perennial crops, you’ll discover that eating from your backyard through all 12 months is possible.

With a hearty dose of enthusiasm and expertise, author Misilla dela Llana of YouTube’s Learn to Grow channel presents this season-by-season guide to growing edible plants, covering everything from what tasks and what crops are best for each harvesting season to step-by-step DIY projects for structures and methods to temper weather extremes. With Four-Season Food Gardening you can keep on growing, no matter what challenges Mother Nature presents.

Inside, you’ll find info on:

  • Veggies you can harvest in the dead of winter
  • Foods that come from perennial plants you harvest from for many years
  • How to build and use cold frames and other season extenders to prolong your harvest
  • Tips for incorporating layers of edible plants to maximize space
  • Pruning, planting, and maintenance advice for dozens of crops
  • Seasonal maintenance and harvesting know-how from a pro

Build a forest of food in your backyard and reap the delicious rewards for years to come!

This a short but great, in depth book for gardeners. I love that it's based on how to garden per season as that's exactly what I needed, to have clear instructions about what I should be doing each season to prepare for the best possible harvest.

This has a beautiful cover. And now I’m more determined than ever to grow a garden year around. About the book. So basically this is a “how to” which I thought wonderfully put. There is a introduction, section 1 and section 2. Section 1 is about getting started and section 2 is season by season preparation and growing.
Just some of the how tos :
• Setting up a rain barrel
• Setting up a soaker hose
• Building a simple raised bed
• Building a Hugelkultur bed (which I found fascinating).
• Plant fruit trees
• Choose a planting method
• Do pest management
• Save seeds

The author shares her knowledge about the types of garden tools and garden beds and so much more. All of this gardening was done outside and I think every single thing had a photo. I’m going to have to say that this is probably my favorite garden book to date. I highly recommend it.
I just preordered my copy. I hope this was helpful.

In this easy to understand guide, readers will learn how to grow food during all four seasons. Not only does the author teach how to grow food outdoors in various types of climates, but she covers everything that you need to know about gardening. Whether you are new to gardening or experienced, this book has something for everyone. I liked the short and concise chapters and the graphics were very helpful. This book is perfect for those who are interested in self-sufficiency and sustainability.

In the future, I would like a book dedicated to greenhouse gardening and more information on how to grow food in climates with long, cold, and snowy winters.

I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be purchasing.

I'm an avid gardener and always looking for ways to improve upon last year's problems. This book is full of helpful information and is easy to read. I liked the layout and color coding behind things to quickly find lists and recipes. This is my first year attempting to compost, and last year our tomatoes had a problem, so hoping some of the tips in this book can help!

I received access via Netgalley, but my opinions are my own.
This book had some great and unexpected tips and insights which gives one confidence in their ability to grow a garden as well as do other important things in that realm they may wish like composting. However, there is not much in reference to dealing with extreme locals where the seasons are not as standard like here in Texas, but for most areas this would be absolutely perfect.

This is a amazing gardening book for beginners! Thankfully it doesn’t read like a text book like other gardening books I’ve tried. It includes everything between garden buildings methods, healthy soil, pests, and when to plant what. I also really enjoyed the use of lists and bullet points. Definitely worth getting.

Great introductory book. I found the autumn and winter sections especially helpful, because that's when I struggle the most. I want to get the full potential out of my garden this year, so I'll definitely be using these tips and tricks.

What a little gem of a book!

I live in a region with cold winters, so I'm most interested in looking for ways to extend my harvest, but without having to invest in bank-breaking supplies. Four-Season Food Gardening gives some excellent tips on how to do that. It's such an easy and accessible book, split into each season and what to grow. I absolutely love the photography and helpful charts (most specifically the one that identifies what containers to plant certain species in).

I can't think of a better beginner's guide I've seen recently than this one, and I can see myself coming back to it again and again. Highly recommended.

Thank you to Quarto Books for giving me the opportunity to review this through NetGalley.

There was a lot of really helpful and easy things you could try or implement in your garden in this book. I have had a garden for years, but some of the things seemed easy to try, give you more time to enjoy fresh food and I cannot wait to try them out!!

Thank you to NetGalley for an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.

Short read. I don't know that I would recommend it for true beginners but it is a great source of inspiration to the novice and intermediate gardener who want to expand and build upon their knowledge.
