Interesting read, with good pacing and decent characters. I liked the mythology and historical aspect. It wasn't quite as creepy as I was expecting but still good!

This was a clever story, stitching the past and present together, wrapped up in a healthy dose of myth. My kind of book. And while I was not that bothered by the main characters (the sisters mainly) I did love the side characters and the story as a whole and how it affected everyone involved. I liked the details of the past, and the descriptions of Romania, not to mention the detailing of the forests especially.

If you like a little freaky supernatural horror, then this is the book to idly pass your time!

This was a pretty good, interesting book. Lots of Roma mythology, a little bit of gore, a decently fleshed-out cast of characters. Personally, I thought the normal speaking of the characters was a little overdone (who the heck actually uses the word "engrossed" in conversation?)

Overall, a good read. I enjoyed it.

Thanks to Netgalley, authors Gina & Anne DiCarlo and Black Rose Writing for allowing me to read the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

All opinions are my own.

I enjoyed this book, it was well written and I spent the entire time with my heart in my mouth. It was full of creppy atmospheric imagery of the occult and was unpredictable and brimming with mystery. The narrative takes a while to get used too as it bounces back and forth and takes the reader a while to catch up, but overall this took nothing from the book.

Revenant By Gina Dicarlo.
Renee, her sister Lou, and their team of photojournalists from Itinera are excited about their three-week assignment to delve into Romanian history and capture its beauty on film.A tip about a yet undocumented castle promises to be a tantalizing addition to their project, but instead leads them to the forefront of a collision between the modern and ancient worlds. Now they must face powerful magic, a twisted love that survived death, and evil so strong that it persisted through time to renew itself again and again until it found the perfect host...
Murder, bloodlust, and supernatural power beyond imagining leads them on a journey to the wildest, remotest regions of Romania, to a people locked in time, where Renee and her team find themselves in the midst of an ancient struggle and in a desperate race to save one of their own.
An ok read with good characters. Slow but readable. 3*.

Revenant by Gina & Anne Marie DiCarlo definitely starts with some horrific violence in the prologue that leaves you curious to learn the story & a sense that supernatural may be involved.
The first few chapters switch back & forth between different people in different times & places, so I was a bit confused at first, especially because some chapters had labels of time & place while others did not.
This book is full of history intermixed with various tragedies, hauntings, magic, ghosts, creatures and various unexplainable events that creates quite a spooky tale.
I did wish it was shorter in length & found some of the dialogue unnatural sounding. But I did enjoy the parts with the magazine crew & I loved the sisterly bond between Renee & Lou.
Please check trigger warnings. This book contains &/or mentions violence, gore, bloodshed, suicide, animal death/mutilated, abuse & murder.
Amidst the chaos of horrors, there was this one line about hope that I loved. “Hope has the power to give us the strength we need to keep fighting, even when all seems lost. Hope is strength.” (Located at 78.2% of the book)
