I really wanted to like this book. The author purposefully sets out a cadence, then does not stick to it. She tries to rhyme, but when a rhyme doesn’t work, they don’t seem to care. Examples, Kindness does not rhyme with happiness, nor does Melanin rhyme with amazing. Then add that the story is long, and a bit complicated. I like the message of the book, but it is delivered poorly. This message has been done better, so I would leave this one on the shelf.

Very cute children's book that shows how not everyone was created the same. This book primarily focuses on how everyones skin tone/color may not be the same which is what makes us who we are and makes us all different.

A beautifully illustrated book that celebrates the differences of individuals and focuses on the importance of what is on the inside that matters.

I loved the message in this story and that it showed a real-life scenario about a child asking his parent why his skin looks different. I gave it 4 stars based on personal preference of the illustration style and the font of the text, which was slightly uneven. It's better to have simple clear fonts expecially for young readers or those with dyslexia. I love that it was written by an Indian American woman who is showcasing her heritage and I appreciated the information in the back of the book to help parents have conversations with their children about skin color and Hinduism.

This rhyming picture book tells an important message about body positivity and the value in diversity. In the story the characters learn that we are all different on the outside and that is ok and what really matters is what is inside. The story also brings in Indian culture and traditions, while also facing cultural stereotypes such as lighter vs darker skin colour and what kind of discrimination may go along with those distinctions. The book is written in a very large font that is easy to read and is usually black on white or very light coloured backgrounds and does not impede on the illustrations. I do think that the vocabulary is a little bit too advanced for the audience, but I think that it would be fine in shared reading or read aloud situations. As a result, I would recommend this book to parents and teachers of children in the age 4-7 range, with the intent of it being read to the child. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book!

"How Our Skin Sparkles" is a children's picture book story about why different people have different colored skin. It is told in rhyme and has beautiful full color drawings. Teaches about melanin and pigmentation and that we are all how God has made us, and we are all equal regardless of skin color. It also gives some Indian cultural references and foods. A good book for a young elementary classroom.

What a cute story about how we should be loving the kind to everyone, regardless of how we look on the outside. That our skin sparkles no matter if we are blue, white, dark skinned etc. As a teacher of young students, it’s important to instill that “no matter what we look on the outside we are all equal on the inside.” I will add this book to my read aloud collection. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.

I loved this book. With is wonderful message about how differences make us special but on the inside we are all the same and that is what really matters.

Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for providing the ARC to me in exchange for my honest review.

Quite an amazing and significant relevant storybook for young readers who are living amongst friends and family of different family backgrounds.

The story explains well the concept of how we can proudly flaunt our skin colour. It's nothing to be ashamed of. I appreciate the author's thoughtful inclusion of Lord Krishna's story.

The illustrations are amazing and we love loud colours too!

An amazing read.

Thank you, author and Netgalley, for the advance review copy.

Aarav loves Lego dinosaurs and eating snacks with his little sister Sharvi one day Aarav comes home and asks his mum why does his skin look different to other children in his class and his mum explains how our skin sparkles

How Our Skin Sparkles is a great book about inclusivity and loving who you are, no matter what your skin color. I appreciated the different types of children portrayed, and information about the Indian culture. I wish the font was a little more readable.
