KJ Sutherland's Disappearing the Dead will have you guessing until the end. The author's knowledge of the intricacies of the Air Force's justice system (or lack thereof) is well-researched and will make you angry in all the right ways. Paul Bennett is a perfectly flawed character, often allowing his ego to get the best of him, even when it threatens his family, but in the end you continue to root for him.

Set in what is for me an unusual and unfamiliar milleu - the US military legal community in Europe - this book has the potential to be a very good read. However, it tries to be too many things - a legal thriller, a murder mystery, a ‘whodunnit’, a military drama, a conspiracy tale, an action adventure - and ends up falling between all those stools. At one point, I read “This was getting more complicated by the minute, thought Paul” - a sentiment which received a heartfelt “Hear, hear” from this reader.

Difficult to sum up the whole book as it was a mixture of US military procedures. murder mystery and a conspiracy thrown in.

Plenty of action with the main character Paul Bennett, a former district attorney, joining the Air Force JAG Corps based in Germany. One object was to gather funds to pay for his young son's life saving treatment. His wife was military as well but does not feature a lot.

Without spoiling too much, there is a young Turkish woman's remains found in a winery slope (vivid description!) and a missing pilot lost in Turkey.

Luckily, Paul is on the case and there are plenty of twists before all is revealed (I guessed it quite early on but it did not spoil the ending.

Thanks to Net Galley and BooksGoSocial for the chance to read and review.
ps just ordered another of Mr Bennett's books. Quite like him.

This legal/military procedural promises edge of your seat non-stop action and it delivers, mostly. Paul, a former district attorney, joins the Air Force JAG Corps overseas in order to get his son the life saving treatment he needs. Lots is possible suspects and twists and turns so the killer’s identity wasn’t given away was a plus. On the down side, how a father would made so many sacrifices for the sake of his son and then let his ego put that all in jeopardy was baffling. I guess it’s a man thing. I found the female characters to be sadly lacking well, character. They were either gorgeous, selfless mothers or gorgeous slutty career women sleeping their way through the corps. I liked the mystery but not the main characters so I’ll be giving the rest of the series a miss.
