Description

"A MISSING FIGHTER PILOT.

A MILITARY CONSPIRACY.

A LAWYER DETERMINED TO UNCOVER THE TRUTH.

When Paul Bennett joined the US Air Force as its Chief Counsel in Germany, he believed he had found the solution to a family crisis. The military moved the Bennetts into a German villa, paid his son’s medical bills, and assigned Paul to trials in scenic locations across Europe.

Then, as Congress is investigating the failed rescue operation of a missing fighter pilot, the severed limbs of a Turkish bride wash up in a German vineyard. The Brass is determined to put the husband, Kale, behind bars and expects Paul, who has since been assigned as Kale’s defense lawyer, to help put him there. But Paul refuses to be bullied by his superiors. To him, it’s a matter of professional ethics. To the military establishment, it’s political dynamite. And their reaction is as swift as it is devastating.

Now, Paul must rescue his client and himself from the clutches of military injustice. But first, he’ll need to uncover the connection between his client’s case and the disappearance of a Gulf War fighter pilot.

OR SHORTER

From the vineyards of Germany to the Alps of Switzerland, a military lawyer sets out to learn the connection between the murder of his client’s bride and the disappearance of a Gulf War fighter pilot.

Difficult to sum up the whole book as it was a mixture of US military procedures. murder mystery and a conspiracy thrown in.

Plenty of action with the main character Paul Bennett, a former district attorney, joining the Air Force JAG Corps based in Germany. One object was to gather funds to pay for his young son's life saving treatment. His wife was military as well but does not feature a lot.

Without spoiling too much, there is a young Turkish woman's remains found in a winery slope (vivid description!) and a missing pilot lost in Turkey.

Luckily, Paul is on the case and there are plenty of twists before all is revealed (I guessed it quite early on but it did not spoil the ending.

ps just ordered another of Mr Bennett's books. Quite like him.

overseas in order to get his son the life saving treatment he needs. His wife, a military brat, smooths the transition as Paul immerses himself in his new career. An alpha male, used to running the show, Paul doesn’t take well to following orders, especially when he’s expected to put on a show rather than see justice is served. The mystery of how a pilot KIA in Turkey and a dismembered woman found in Germany could be linked was intriguing, with just enough of a trail of breadcrumbs to keep me guessing. Lots is possible suspects and twists and turns so the killer’s identity wasn’t given away was a plus. On the down side, how a father would made so many sacrifices for the sake of his

KJ Sutherland's Disappearing the Dead will have you guessing until the end. The author's knowledge of the intricacies of the Air Force's justice system (or lack thereof) is well-researched and will make you angry in all the right ways. Paul Bennett is a perfectly flawed character, often allowing his ego to get the best of him, even when it threatens his family, but in the end you continue to root for him.
