Thank you to the author, the Quarto Publishing Group and NetGalley, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is another in the "Little People, Big Dreams" series, and once again it is very well-done and a great introduction to a part of US history that many are unaware of. The inspiring Wilma Mankiller is a proud member of the Cherokee nation, and the book chronicles the events in Wilma's life, while at the same time doing a beautiful job of addressing the heavy issues of the struggles of Native Americans, racism and feminism in a child-appropriate way.

This book in the 'Little People, BIG DREAMS' series follows right along with the rest of them that I've read....it is great! This series of books for little kids introduces kids to people who've made an impact in our world......& it's done in a way that kids can appreciate & follow along with. The drawings/illustrations are done so complimentary to the text/story, the colors are perfect for this story. The text is written at a kid's level to keep their interest, & it reads very well. The kids can read along & see it happening in the drawings. This 63 y/o even learned something in reading this! What a fun way to learn!
I received an e-ARC of this book from Quarto Publishing Group-Francis Lincoln Children's Books via NetGalley in return for reading it & posting my own independent/honest review.

What an incredible inspirational figure. Wilma Mankiller came from the Cherokee tribe and lived on a farm in Oklahoma, but her people were encouraged to leave their land by the government to resettle in the city of San Francisco, reminiscent of the Trail Of Tears experienced when her Native American ancestors were forced from their land by the new settlers on American shores. I adore the Little People, Big Dreams series, as it brings such inspirational figures from many backgrounds into the forefront. Previously, my children and I knew very little about Wilma Mankiller, but her story about enduring racism in school, then going on to protest for better treatment for Native American people, and joining Cherokee Nation and rising to the position of Principal Chief, the tribes leader, is astonishing. What an amazing journey from small farm girl to Principal Chief, in a time when male leaders were the normal. This book is accessible for young readers as it has short paragraphs on each page and is accompanied by full page, colourful illustrations. Such beautiful books..theybare perfect for early readers to practise their reading, but also for slightly older readers like my 9year old, who adores adding to her collection and loves to read about heroic people without being weighed down by realms of information. These snapshots of amazing people are a wonderful introduction to biographies. A brilliant addition to the series, released 30th August 2022. #wilmamankiller #mariaisabelsanchezvegara #netgalley #littlepeoplebigdreams #cherokeetribe #principalchief #beautifulbooks #inspirationalpeople

Wilma Mankiller by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara is an illustrated children's book that talks of the inspiring Wilma Mankiller. Wilma Mankiller is a proud member of the Cherokee tribe and the book chronicles the events in Wilma's life with beautiful illustrations by Alexandra Bowman. The illustrations and the writing is splendidly done. The book addresses all the heavy issues with delicacy making it suitable for children. The book talks about feminism, racism, the struggles of the Cherokee tribe, the determination and will serve as a wonderful eye-opener and motivator for children. I've read a lot of the Little People, Big Dreams series and I'm happy that a historical Indigenous women's story is being shared. I was not aware of Wilma Mankiller prior to reading this book. As with all the books in the series the illustrations are gorgeous and the story is informative and a great way to get kids excited to learn about history.

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books for an advanced copy.

Another fabulous picture book biography from Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara! Wilma Mankiller was a Cherokee woman who was forced from her land during the trail of tears. As an adult she attended protests and was an advocate for Indigenous people in the United States. Complete with interesting pictures, simple short paragraphs of text and a timeline at the end of the book, this biography has everything that young readers need to be successful when learning about this famous activist. I would highly recommend this book to parents and teachers of children in the age 6-11 range. This book is an excellent starting off point for researching Wilma Mankiller, Indigenous history in the US or learning about the concepts related to writing a biography. Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book!

Wilma Mankiller's story is one that many may not have heard.
Brought up in America, she witnessed the injustice toward her people and she campaigned successfully for Native American rights. She was the first female to be appointed Cherokee chief and she went on to create a Cherokee government that established early education programs for children and adults.
The illustrations are detailed and vibrant and the added timeline at the rear of the book adds further information to Mankiller's life story.

WoW........Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara books must be one of the best little books to purchase for children, these are the best-selling series of books and educational games that explore the lives of outstanding people, from designers and artists to scientists and activists. All of them achieved incredible things, yet each began life as a child with a dream.

So, this latest book is about Wilma Mankiller who was a pioneering Native American leader and activist.

"Growing up, little Wilma was surrounded by her Cherokee heritage. Her parents taught her to be proud of who she was, and all that had come before her. But when the family moved from Oklahoma’s Rocky Mountains to the city of San Francisco, it was a big change, and Wilma fully realised how unfairly the world treated Native Americans.

As an adult, she became a leader in the fight for Native American rights, and rose to become the first woman ever to be elected as a Chief of a Cherokee Nation. This inspiring book features stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of the pioneering Native American leader and activist."

I had never heard of Wilma Mankiller until I read this book. The pictures do a good job of showing emotion. This book seems to be an older reading level than the others in the series. The author did a good job explaining the demonstrations Mankiller was part of as well as how she was the first female principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. This would be a great addition for any older child's reading collection.

I got this Little People Big Dreams book for my seven year old daughter who loves them. This one was no different. A great fun and educational account of Wilma Mankiller’s life presented in a nice way for children to read with nice illustrations. As an adult I also love to read them, and always learn something new at the same time. Definitely recommend!

Little People, Big Dreams is my favorite children’s book series. This one is about Wilma Mankiller and she is quite the courageous woman. She is a Cherokee Member and at the time she lived that was not an easy life. Since she is Native American, the European Settlers decided to take their land and resettle them called The Trail of Tears. The Native Americans were not treated right. This leaves Wilma and her family very poor.

Yet, Wilma is a dedicated woman and spends her life working extremely hard. She becomes the first Female Principal Chief to lead the Cherokee Nation. She worked on fighting for fairness for her people. She said to focus on the good things and approach each day as a great one. She was proud of who she was and of indigenous people.

Wilma is an wonderful role model for everyone, but especially indigenous children. Her message is that it is important to value yourself and your community. If you do this anything is possible. That is the kind of message children need to know.

Thank you NetGalley, Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books. I am always happy to review these books.

Another LPBD book complete, I've been loving this multi million - copy best selling series! I'm ashamed to say that I really didn't know much about Wilma and this book taught me. Not my favorite for the illustrations, there are a little more bland than many of the LPBD books I've read however, the story is important, I learned something, and I truly enjoyed it. This is a special book and an important part of American History that I'll enjoy sharing with my grandkids, helping them learn.

This is a unique series to teach children about change makers in the world past and present.

Wilma became a leader in the Cherokee community. From being forced off her land as a child to taking an active role in making change, she teaches children to get involved. To stand up what is right.

This story was more than I expected it to be. It didn't sugar coat her story for children. It told the truth about land being stolen and mentions her getting divorced. These facts are important to the story and in other stories could get left out.

The end of the book has includes a brief timeline and overview of her work. There is a recommendation to read more about Wilma Mankiller.

Thank you NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children's Books for the opportunity to read and review this book.

This was such a lovely book highlighting what the indigenous population had to go through. I very much enjoyed Wilma’s story and I think it’s an important one to share with our children. Can’t wait to buy it once it’s published.

I have never heard of Wilma before, which is why children's series like LPBD are so important to have in classrooms and libraries. Wilma was an activist and leader of the Cherokee nation and her story stemming from the Trail of Tears deserves to be known!

I received an electronic ARC from Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books through NetGalley.
Readers learn about Mankiller's early life - the poor conditions on the government land and the family support. They see her grow up and become active in supporting Native American rights, and then see her elected as the first female Principal Chief. They also see the challenges she faced as she stood up for herself and others.
Sanchez Vegara emphasizes how important it is to believe in yourself and models this with the information she shares about Wilma Mankiller.

I have never heard of this lady before, so I was pleased to read this book and learn about her, but in a fun and simple way.
I say this everytime, but these books are fantastic - even though they are meant for children, I always learn something new with every one.

Thank you so much Netgalley and Maria for the wonderful book!

I never heard of Wilma Mankiller before, so I was highly excited about reading her biography. Not to mention that her last name seemed interesting. I wondered if there is any special kind of story behind it. It wasn't included in the book but I searched online and found that her surname derives from the high military rank achieved by a Cherokee ancestor. A Native American, She was born in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and later moved to San Francisco as part of a federal government program with intention to separate the indigenous people. The struggles of Native Americans were included as well as the protests carried out by natives where Wilma was involved. She had to suffer for both being a Native American and a woman. When she became the first woman elected to serve as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, many people doubted her abilities but Wilma proved them wrong with her dedication and hard work.

As always, the narration is easily understandable and the illustrations are very pretty. Recommended!

Wilma Mankiller is a fascinating book packed with information on the history on the Cherokee Tribe.
It details a basic outline of the journey many of the people of the Cherokee Tribe had to endure and their struggles finding a place in society once they had been forcibly displaced.

The book gently touches topics of the social stance of a Woman's role in society and how Wilma's gender often caused her hurdles despite her abilities and aspirations.

Wilma's story is one that speaks of endurance and consistency to achieve your dreams and helping be a voice to ensure wrongs are made right.

As someone who is not American I still found this story to be inspiring and educational as there are parallels to historical events in my own country. This story will hopefully inspire American children to grow up sharing their voice to this cause.

I was gifted a digital copy of Wilma Mankiller; Little People Big Dreams in exchange for a fair and honest review
