Chris Hadfield was a mastermind with this second installment of the Apollo Murders series.

It's an action-packed book with a lot of intrigue and secrets that embrace the historical tone that gives depth to the story.

The microscopic level of details is unbelieveable and combined very well with the real-based characters and secrecy that embrace the reader.

A soviet jet lands in Israel, the pilot says he is defecting. The period the early seventies and a time when the tensions between East and West are high. The stakes couldn't be higher but is there more to this than a simple detection. Brilliant from start to finish.

Great novel which was very well researched regarding both the US and USSR air forces and planes. It's does keep you guessing who's a goodie and who isn't.
Thoroughly enjoyed the story and would definitely recommend it to people who like thrillers about people and planes.

I think there's a new generation of spy thriller writer and this a fast paced, action packed and entertaining mix of thriller, spy story with an interesting background and a well developed MC
I want to read other books by this author

In this instance I don’t have the time or chance to read and review the book but if it’s anything like the Apollo Murders which was fantastic i know I’ll be in for a great action packed read.

Having thoroughly enjoyed The Apollo Murders, I was looking forward to reading Hadfield's next book - and I was not disappointed. The Defector is fast-paced and full of the fantastic real world details present in the previous book. The book started a little slow but picked up substantially in the second half and was full of action, emotion and brilliant twists and turns. In my opinion The Defector is better than it's predecessor and I cannot recommend it enough. 5/5.

There is no doubt that Chris Hadfield can write, and write with knowledge and purpose. There are scenes where you feel present. But these are few. The pacing was slow, and it felt like I was wading through word sludge. I'm a huge fan of Chris Hadfield's. A fan of the life he's led. The events he's been a part of. Hadfield is an extraordinary person, but, I hate to say, for me, The Defector missed the human warmth needed for me to connect and follow through to the end. Rated four stars for the excellent writing and knowledge applied to put this book together. I hope there will be more books from Hadfield.

Excellent story built around factual events.
I really enjoyed this book, it gripped me right up to the end. The author cleverly blends real world events like the Yom Kippur war and the superpowers space and technology into his tale. It leaves the nagging doubt that at least some of what he describes could have happened.
The book has clearly been extensively researched and also draws a lot on the side range of experiences of the author.
I have no hesitation in definitely recommending this book.

I loved reading The Defector by Chris Hadfield. Maybe it's jut me but all the technical details about the planes and physics gave me the impression that I was one of the pilots that were testing the aircraft. This book made me google more details about the mentioned aircrafts. Loved the story too, but one particular chapter stayed with me and it's still with me. That one chapter it's too sad. I understand that that just shows what kind of person is that character but still could have chosen some other being like a rat or a person. Anyway, I loved the book and I am looking forward for the next one.

This is a technical well researched book about jet aircraft. To call it a thriller is quite misleading. It is more a story woven around the aircraft rather than the aircraft included in a strong story. Nevertheless it is well written and the characters believable, however, I did not find it particularly enjoyable.

I hadn’t read much of this book when I realised my husband would enjoy this book more than I would, given its subject matter and the deeply technical aspect of the narrative.
He thoroughly enjoyed it, it is well written, and he found the story and the background to it intriguing, and found it hard to put down. Recommended.

The Defector by Chris Hadfield is a well researched, fast paced, spy thriller. Starting with a defection to Israel in 1973 of a MIG 25 'Foxbat' with its pilot Alexander Vasilyevich Abramovich, Colonel in the Russian Air Force.
As the Yom Kippur war is about to kick off, the Israelies now possess a significant bargaining chip with which to negotiate with the USA for supplying more munitions. So, Alex and his Foxbat soon get shipped off to America.
But is Alex as good as he seems?
Gripping from start to finish but will there be a follow up, as Alex seems to have disappeared off the face of the Earth?

A fantastic follow-up to The Apollo Murders shows that Chris Hadfield's foray into fiction was more than a one-hit wonder. A surprising lack of space action, with the focus much more on fighter jets, but I was utterly hooked. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC
