Oh gosh this one was a bit of a struggle for me. The premise is good - a young trainee lawyer (Rafe) leaves London to go home for the annual Fracas Frolic (village competition) but arrives late so decides to shimmy up the side of the house to his old room so he doesn’t wake anyone up. He is shocked to find someone in his room and the house descends in to chaos. He’s accidentally compromised Genevieve, the eldest daughter of the Slade family who are renting his family house.

He must not have been told, which seems a bit of a stretch but ok.

The problem I have is how ponderously slow this book is. The explanation of Rafe’s delayed journey is interminable. Once we do arrive at his home and post debacle… the pace is STILL slow and while this can work in heavily character driven books, these characters don’t have much personality at all. Rafe seems to be a Latin- quoting, self-described polymath but he is mostly quite insufferable. And Genevieve is… lonely - that we discover - but otherwise a bit of a blank page.

The plot inches along. It is a shame as it could have been warm, light, funny … it is not those things.

What a fun and witty read! Along with my beloved arranged marriage trope, i absolutely adored the banter between Genevieve and Rafe. This was a clean regency romance with all the pining and miscommunication one looks for in these books. Throw in some relay races, meddlesome families, and secret reading rooms and you have a light, funny, and sweet love story. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this!

This first book in The Corinthians series was a sweet and captivating historical romance. The humor, wit, cheeky surprises, and twists were very entertaining. I enjoyed the delightful characters and the lovely ending. I highly recommend reading!

Thank you NetGalley for giving me an early copy of this book.

A Sporting Affair follows the story of a couple who's forced to get married after an accidental awkward situation. The story is narrated in third person which I enjoyed and is really well written. However, I did get bored at parts and skipped full paragraph. Something about the inner monologue of the characters felt unpersonal to me and I couldn't connect to anything they were saying. The romance was okay, very cute.

In general, not a bad book but nothing incredible either.

The story is entertaining. The plot connects with the main characters objective. The characters are charming and entertaining. I like that the writer provided humor in the story to weigh out some of the heavier moments. I will admit some moments of the story I did struggle with focusing on the story. Some of the wording or quotes from the book lost my tracking the story. Again, the book has its moments of an entertaining book.

This one just didn't get me hooked for some reason. It could have been the writing style or something else, but I just couldn't get through it.

I have to admit, this particular romance was not for me. I can see how it could be enjoyable for others, however! Someone will love it! I liked the characters enough to finish. very cute.

A lot more editing, a little bit more spark and this book would be really good. As its stands the book was okay. The protagonists had some fun dialogue and moments together.

Okay read.

Poor Rafe! Who's the young lady he caught in his bedroom and who screamed when she saw him?
LOL As usual for a Paullett Golden romance, the novel is as witty and comedy-filled as you may hope. This might be why Golden is one of my favorite authors for the romance genre.
So, back to Rafe's misadventures. He's told he "compromised" her - the novel is set in the 19th century after all - and that he has to marry her, but fortunately she has other plans... right?
You know, I might just stick to this new series while I work my (slow) way to reading more of The Enchantresses series.
Happy reading to anyone who chooses this book for good company.

This was unbelievably wordy. It really needed pruning. Most of the early opener was not needed and there was so much extraneous detail to wade through.

This book is about Rafe and Genevieve. I liked the setting and the event in town seemed fun. I enjoyed the banter between Genevieve and Rafe. However, Iafter a while Genevieve started to annoy me. To me it felt the romance was lacking something. A spark was missing. Despite that I did enjoy reading this book.

I love the author’s writing style except for the verbosity. The first three chapters could easily have been trimmed down to one. The same is true for the next three, after which I stopped reading. This would probably be a good book if it were slimmed down to a short novella.

Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC.
