I enjoyed reading this colourful book, which makes a doodle artist out of everyone. The doodles explained are all easy to try at home and Sarah Alberto uses easy steps to make sure everyone can reach a good result in the end. I'm sure I'll try out some of her cute ideas.

What a fun way to practice your doodling skills and stretch your creativity muscles! The reader is shown a variety of script styles and then lead, step by step, through numerous examples by the author, supplying plenty of inspiration for their own doodle words. Each example leaves space for the reader to try their hand at their own doodle word. This could be a lot of fun to add to planners, signs or just to pass the time.

Thank you to Sarah Alberto, Quarto Publishing Group – Race Point Publishing/Race Point Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this cozy little book. Comments are my own, unbiased opinion.

This book is great there are a ton of examples on how to change up your lettering. This is a must for everyone's reference shelf whether you are a beginner or advanced in lettering you will love this book and keep going back to it for ideas and inspiration.

I have to admit I’m a doodler, but my doodles are all just scribbles and lines! This book teaches you how to make your doodles more impressive by adding sketches and lines and turning words into cute little pictures! The book is full of examples and instructions on how to turn random words into a doodled picture relevant to that word – for example the word “Grow” ends up with each letter ‘growing’ out of a flower pot! The page gives you good clear instructions and there’s a space at the bottom of the page to have a practice and try yourself.

The book does look great, although personally I wouldn’t class it as doodling! I’m not very good at drawing and some of the ‘doodle’s’ do look like you need to be fairly good at it! But on the whole it is a fun book to give a try and would certainly make diaries, journals and general doodles look much more exciting than the scribbles that I currently do!

The Art of Doodle Words - Turn Your Everyday Doodles into Cute Hand Lettering! by Sarah Alberto is full of inspiration. Ms. Alberto carefully lays out more than a dozen types of lettering. Each style has the full alphabet listed so you can practice whatever you like. The second half of the book is full of ‘doodle words’. These words are playful and combine drawing, lettering and coloring. Tons of ideas to mix and match. Extremely fun and creative. This would be a great book if you want to begin Journaling which is all the rage. Well done!

I would like to thank Sarah Alberto, Quarto Publishing Group – Race Point Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Sometimes I get impatient with authors who tell this neat story about how they just sort of followed their passion and ended up writing a book. Most of the time, the story is pretentious and feels embellished and often just fake. Not so with Sarah Alberto and her story about how her Doodle Words came to be. Alberto comes across as genuine and likable - someone who you’d like to meet for coffee and chat about all sorts of things. Plus, she has written a one of the best books I’ve seen that deals with fancy writing.

Fancy writing is everywhere these days. There are classes, books, youtube videos, pinterest boards, etc. devoted to swirly, cool looking handwriting. Alberto eschews the usual stroke by stroke instruction and gives clear examples of how to blend handlettering with doodling, all while emphasizing the need for flexibility and creativity by the doodler. She takes you through her creative process, but keeps things open enough for the reader to try their own thing.

This will be popular with the DIY arts & crafts crowd, for sure.

The Art of Doodle Words by Sarah Alberto
Turn Your Everyday Doodles into Cute Hand Lettering!

What a fun book! I remember my father hand lettering a sign for an event at school and wondering how he was able to make the sign so beautiful. His time as a printer may have helped because he had seen so many fonts and was conversant with them. This book reminded me of my father and of taking printing and of signs I have hand lettered in the past.

I can see giving this book as a gift to my granddaughters or perhaps my sister who is an artist. It has new ideas and creative ones to use to make a word or a sign just that little bit more special by turning that word into a picture that illustrates the word. What do I mean? A rose can have a rose drawn as the ‘o’ in the word or hats can be used to illustrate each letter in the word or…well…you might want to pick up the book to see what I am talking about because…you might get an idea you will want to try next time you write down a word ;)

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto-Race Point Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.

This book provides step by step illustrations on how to take a word from simple printed letters to a fun work of art.

I loved this book! It shows the way to create words that show what they mean in their letters. The break down is such that even a person with absolutely no drawing experience can follow the instructions. The doodles are cute, fun, and colorful. I can’t explain who much this book excited me to try my hand at creative doodling.

I received an eBook copy from NetGalley for an honest review.

This book is so inspiring. Many uses other than just drawing. This would be great inspiration for making your own embroidery patterns. I highly recommend this book for inspiration purposes. Not sure if an artist would care for it but I can see myself doodling page 66 since my name is on that page. Thanks so much for the free download and thanks to the author and publisher for letting me have this copy!

The first section of the book made me a bit nervous. It appeared to be all inspiration and no tips, which is fine, but wasn’t what I was looking for. Luckily the rest of the book made me much happier. There are many step-by-step projects to inspire you. Some involve using a small accent to incorporate the word you’re using into the doodle (example turning the letter R in MERMAID into a mermaid’s tail). Or perhaps you want to write the word CAT using an actual cat doodle. For Burger the word BURGER is placed between to burger buns. Etc.

This is a good place to start if you want to letter things but don’t feel quite sure about how to go about it and/or don’t want to focus on fancier illustrated quotes.

If you want to know how to incorporate many styles of lettering into your art, this is the book for you.

Absolutely love what this book brings to the world of doodling. Lots of projects to do and create. Simply brilliant. Even my 7yr old loves it.

Full of great ideas, the examples are nicely done and steps a laid out in easy to follow. I found it very easy to follow along, reading in digital form its not as easy to trace the examples but it give the ideas and where to start with. It's a great book for jumping off point to put your own twists on alphabetically images. Great lettering for flyers, signs whatever needs that personal touch!

A very cute and through book. Good step by step drawings, allowing everyone to take part in the drawing. It even have space for you to try the doodles your self. I am really happy with this book.

The Art of Doodle Words has many different types of lettering ideas to get you started. From simple to unique the lettering in here will either show you how to create the same styles or give you a push so you can come up with your own.

The Art of Doodle Words is a cute read. It's nicely presented, with some lovely illustrations. It certainly offers plenty of inspiration. I might have liked a little more technical substance, but maybe that's not right for this style of book. As someone who is obsessed with realism and perfection in art, I am keen to expand my horizons and attempt something more freestyle, and this book has definitely given me a nudge to try to bring a little more doodle to my day. I would recommend The Art of Doodle Words for those looking to try their hand at something artsy for the first time, and also for bullet journal fans looking for ways to spice up their spreads.

What a great step-by-step tool to help doodlers or wanna-be doodlers take it to the next level. Lots of fun, simple ideas that can lead to more creative doodling art. I can't wait to get my hands on a print copy and buy several more for some of my friends!

I craft but don't really draw. This looked cute and something that could help me start drawing at least cute words for my crafts.
It is clear I have no talent. But I enjoyed trying and some actually looked like they were supposed to.\The majority of the instructions were clear but when they weren't it was frustrating (draw a fox? you just walked me through a cat; why not the fox?)
Overall, the full-color doodles inspired me to get creative.

Race Point Publishing and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of The Art of Doodle Words: Turn Your Everyday Doodles into Cute Hand Lettering! I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.

The Art of Doodle Words is an illustrative look at how to creatively write words. Starting with the alphabet, the author provides examples of the letters written in different styles such as cursive, block, and slanted. The author goes on to give examples on some pages of how to use these alphabets, by transforming them into words that illustrate, such as decorating the word sand to resemble that element.

The section on doodle words is more interactive, with step-by-step instruction on how to transform words with depictions of letters as an item or object. With brightly colored pages and many examples to get readers inspired, The Art of Doodle Words is a great drawing instruction book, especially for kids. I do wish it was a little longer, with more step-by-step instructions, but the book is a good starting off point for readers looking to be creative.

I would have been excited to find this book back during my childhood, as well as in my and art teacher days! I loved building and embellishing letters out of shapes and images, and filling them in with color and pattern, I noticed my students decorated the covers of their notebooks and sketchbooks. Recently my 90-year-old Dad told me how he liked to "draw letters" when he was a boy.. This book is a nice introduction to typography.

The Art of Doodle Words has to be one of the most fun art books I’ve read in quite some time. The artwork is cute and silly, but also had some interesting points and applications. All of the artwork was done by Sarah Alberto, a famous YouTube artist. In this book she shows you many of her techniques she uses, and ultimately she teaches how to combine words with doodles and sayings.
This guide book is broken down into two main parts. Part I is all about doodle letters, from simple letters to curly script. Part II is about doodle words, words using a theme and combined together by a doodle. At the end of the second segment is a sampling of Sarah Alberto’s works.
This was a really useful guide. It gave some ideas and instructions, but it didn’t hold your hand through the process. I consider that a good thing, because how else can you jump start your creativity? Mostly I just enjoyed seeing Sarah Alberto’s working process and the completed pieces.

The Art of Doodle Words: Turn Your Everyday Doodles into Cute Hand Lettering! by Sarah Alberto is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary. This is a fantastic book for preteen or early teen kids to be creative and play! Heck, I wanted to play! There is so much in here with lots of step by step instructions on making several of the works. It really is a good way to get the creative juices flowing. The first part shows the reader lots of new ways to make the alphabet! Then it goes into making words into art! Art and play at the same time! That's how I look at my art time! I have a 12 and 13 year old grand daughters that would love this book!

What a fun book! The Art of Doodle Words takes doodling to a new level. For many of us, the art of calligraphy is intimidating, tedious and difficult. Sarah Alberto’s book shows the reader how to combine basic lettering with doodling to create a cute drawing. Once that step has been accomplished then it’s a matter of practice to turn a doodle in to a letter or word.

The Art of Doodle Words will help you unleash your inner artist. It is stress-free and fun!

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.

My Thoughts:

Journaling is all the craze now and this book will help you wordoodle your way right into it! As a child, I recall spending many hours lettering and I think I still have some of those stacked away. This book brought back those fond memories and rekindled my inspiration to hand-letter the doodle way!

The book is well organized with clear and easy step by step instructions. It has lots of cute ideas that made me go ‘aha’ and ‘that is so creative’.

It includes a tools and techniques section at the beginning that gives you a quick look at what you need and how you can get started.

Part One shows you different lettering types with ideas for how to use some of them in words. And this is something you can use for so many things – journaling, scrapbooking, artwork, and more.

Part Two is the wordoodle part where you go through step by step instructions to create word-doodles. Sometimes you start with words and add on doodles to them and at others, you start with cool doodles and include the words. But no matter how you do it, the result is always going to result in an ‘aaaw! so cute’ or ‘wow! so cool’ or both reactions (guaranteed with practice!)!

In Summary (or Additional Thoughts For the Book):

These are books that are perfect gifts for that doodler, that journalese, or anyone who wants to try out these arts. I am looking forward to working on projects with my tween, doodling our hearts and thoughts out using both these wonderful books! And hopefully be inspired to work on our own creative takes on these ideas. After reading these books, I checked out the youtube videos for both these talented artists and there is so much more to learn 🙂

This is a fun book, both for children and, need I say, adults. Well presented with fabulous ideas on using doodle art to reinforce words.
Starting from the simple alphabet to gather ideas of symbolism to the decoration of words one is using.
There is plenty of suggestions in this book, and the ideas are just so imaginative, some simple, whilst other pretty elaborate.
This book just brings out the doodle soul in each and everyone that reads this book

There are a number of artists on social media who create the most beautiful lettering. This book acts as a starter for almost any age group - I am sure that some of my students aged 9 and 10 years would enjoy it as much as I did.

Part one looks at different ways of presenting the letters of the alphabet, with the second part putting ideas into practice. Words and phrases are given as examples and there are clear instructions and photographs to show you how to create your own version.

A very useful book for beginners.

I'm not very good at art. I grew up around people who were great at it, who'd create amazing things on the first try. My incapability to create anything that looks even half-decent after many hours of fixing it stopped me from trying. But I recently realized that despite what I was lead to believe my entire life, erasing isn't mutually exclusive with drawing, and I became unafraid of doing small drawings and doodles.
I'm not the best, or particularly good if I'm being honest, but I'm better than I was. And most importantly, I'm not afraid to try.
Because of my new hobby, when I saw this book on NetGalley I got really excited. My crappy looking, but quite functional bullet journal was begging me to give it a try. And I really enjoyed it.
The instructions are easy to follow, everything is well explained, and the process is broken down into steps that are genuinely easy to do. It takes the fear out of doodling, explains how to do the shapes, makes you want to doodle words all day long. It's so fun.
I recommend this book.

Creative hand lettering has become so popular but often the tutorials are so involved it's hard to pick up on how to recreate the designs. This book teaches you how to create cute letter doodles with step-by-step instructions. There are lots of creative interpretations for bringing doodle letters to life (like spelling the word "tools" with letters that are actual tools) that would be easy for anyone from children to adults to use! The instructions are very simple and easy to follow, no matter your skill level!

What a fun book! These doodles are very simple to recreate, no experience required. I enjoy writing notes to my kids in their lunch box and these adorable handwriting doodles would brighten their day.

When I doodle, I tend to just scribble some messy design, but this book takes the doodles to a whole new level! The first part of the book shows you how to make different kinds of letters and how to spice them up with just a little bit of something extra, liked a dashes or dots. I doodled along with her as I read about the different techniques and thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked the washi tape, stapled, and stitched up designs. The second part of the book takes words and shows you how to draw them step by step. I would have been afraid to try this in the past, but I did some of these words as well. I can't draw a fox, but I did like a lot of the designs. I liked dream, embrace, pizza, castle, pirate, and boots the best.

Sarah Alberto shows you how to combine hand lettering and doodles into whimsical artwork. It is a fun and creative book for ages anywhere from preteens to adults that gives you step by step instructions and inspiration. Doodle Words combines drawing with words. It adds visuals to letters and words to make playful pictures and artwork. Each doodle represents something about the words such as.....the word Tools can have each letter as a picture of a different tool, the word Monster could have each letter drawn as a monster, the word Dog could be drawn with bones and paw prints, and the word Melt can have each letter drawn melting. She also has a You Tube channel - Doodles by Sarah.

I wish I was more gifted in drawing and doodling, so I requested this book and downloaded it to get some help. I have to say, this book is so darn cute and actually really helpful. What I most enjoyed is that this book doesn't make you feel bad for not being the best and has a really laidback approach to instruction. This is definitely a book that I want a hard copy of just to go back through and try to learn more from.

Note: I received an Advance Reading Copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review.

Like many I am gripped by the bullet journal craze. I have always had notebooks, I find writing my thoughts down helps me clear my head and organize. I’m inspired by the beautiful spreads people post online. However, I have to admit, I am nowhere near that creative and don’t think I can be.

But, the book The Art of Doodle Words: Turn Your Everyday Doodles into Cute Hand Lettering! by Sarah Alberto turned up on NetGalley and I couldn’t resist. Who knows, maybe even I can do it. After a short introduction about tools, the book slowly starts teaching doodle words. It starts with a few simple alphabets with some examples on how to make variations on these examples. There is also inspiration on how to make gorgeous words with these alphabets. After that Alberto shows lots of examples of doodle words step by step so simple that even I can do it.

This is a fun book that really invites you to get creative yourself. After working through the examples I feel confident in designing some of my own doodles, and I have lots of inspiration for my own nice spreads in my journals.

I stumbled across Sarah on Instagram several years ago and immediately started following her there and on YouTube. She has some videos of doodles with circles that caught the attention of my daughter and I. One was Disney Princesses and the other was Harry Potter characters. We’ve been huge fans ever since.

The Art of Doodle Words is a fantastic book. It’s full of numerous, creative ideas. The instructions are easy to follow and come with a visual as well as a detailed description. The book begins with a sweet intro, then briefly suggests preferred tools and basic techniques. It’s then broken down into two part. Part one is all about the different types of doodle letters. Block, Bubble, Overlapping, Pillar and Serif are just a few that are included. It gives you the full alphabet, then shows some inspiration on how you can use that type of lettering to create words. Part two is all about fun doodle words. Here you will find how to spell the word dog using bones and a paw print or how to include lettering with cute doodles to spell fun sayings. There are several fun tutorials to try out.

I think this would make a fantastic gift for anyone interested in hand lettering or bullet journaling. It’s definitely easy enough for preteens to understand as well!! I will definitely order a copy to add to our drawing tutorials.

This book is a beginner doodler's dream come true. I cannot tell you how much I loved it! I wanted to try everything all at once.

This book has really neat ideas on how to make learning the alphabet and learning to spell words fun for kids. For example take the word condiments and draw jars to put the letters in and then color them in. I would use this book to teach my kids the alphabet and all the different ways we can write or draw the letters and words.

The book is split into two parts Doodle Letters and Doodle Words.

The first part looks at different types of handwriting and lettering and the second part is called Doodle Words where specific words are illustrated to look like the subject.

Sarah states in the introduction that she finds calligraphy frustrating because it is a very sophisticated form of writing. She went on to find her own way of less formal lettering and her doodles are so popular she features them on her YouTube channel.
She points out that journal stickers and stamps can be expensive, so this is a great way to make a journal or planner look more attractive, and all you need is a pen!

This would make a great gift for anyone starting out in journaling, bloggers who want to make their own eye-catching graphics or creative people who need a little inspiration.

I picked this up because I thought my daughter and I might like it together. I can't say how I feel about it because I never got a chance! My nine year old immediately grabbed the iPad and started doodling on her own with it. So, that's a rave from me!

The design is clear and uncluttered, and the step-by-step drawings are inviting and not at all intimidating. I'm not much of a doodler, but I hope to try a handful of them this holiday weekend.

There are lots of really cute ideas in this book for turning words into doodles. I also really like the different kind of alphabets that were in the beginning of the book. I think the hardest thing is for someone who is not very artistic to recreate some of these because the directions are not very detailed. For example, for the word books, it just tells you to "turn the rectangles into 3D shapes" but there are no other directions for how to do that or step by step pictures/hints like I've seen in other drawing books.

A great fun word doodle book that anyone can have a go at. Lots of easy little word doodles cleverly illustrated, and appealing in their simplicity. You are definitely inspired to think up lots of words and pictures of your own. Great for children and for those who love to journal.

“The art of Doodle Words” is an inventive, amusing look into a playful art style: Sarah Alberto’s “doodle words” are hand-lettered art pieces which incorporate fun pictorial imagery into the construction of a hand-lettered word or phrase. For example, the word “tools” can be spelled out with different types of tools, or a line of cursive may be incorporated into a larger drawing.

The introduction walks the reader through the basics of creating doodle art (including some suggestions for brain-storming and laying out a specific design), while the first part of the book gives numerous examples of different letter form styles: basic handwriting, a few script examples, bubble letters, block letters, and several other styles to give lots of variety and options to the imaginative artist. Different letter styles are offered side-by-side with numerous examples of phrases rendered in that style.

Part Two of “The art of Doodle Words” contains numerous examples of fully doodled words, each example broken down in a step-by-step process so that the artist can follow along and practice creating them. Many of the examples would make good signage for parties or invitations, and fuel the imagination for more. Creative children may enjoy this book especially, as doodle words can work with any skill level and level of creativity; it could also add playfulness to any journaling or scrap-booking practice.

This isn’t a book that teaches fancy hand-lettering or calligraphy, but if you’re drawn to learn Alberto’s playful style of typography, you’ll doubtless find many uses for this technique, and have a lot of fun learning and experimenting along the way. “The art of Doodle Words” doesn’t teach anything besides this very specific style, but the style is one that has an infinite capacity for variety and experimentation — certainly a great tool for any hand-lettering or crafting enthusiast!
