I love Ana Victoria's watercolor paintings. Since I've taken all her Skillshare classes I was happy to see that she has also written a book filled with lots of colorful art lessons. She makes painting fun with her cute flowers, bugs and food paintings.

Thank you Netgalley and Quarto Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book.

What a fun and colorful book. Watercolor beginners will enjoy the painting and lettering activities and exercises. The author reviews a variety of watercolor
paints, papers, and brushes. She carefully explains the best uses for each product while encouraging personal experimentation with each.

The step by step photos are very helpful. The attention to the subjects of transparency and translucency, in watercolors, was very useful.

There was a section on the use of photoshop and reproducing one’s artwork.
This would be valuable in making copies of one’s own work.

A Nice book to help you create wonderful card items with watercolor. There is a section on different techniques to achieve wonderful background, one also on how to use photoshop to make multiple copies of your artwork. This is followed by techniques to paint leaves, flowers, insects/butterflies, fruit/vegetables and lettering all using different techniques with watercolor. I love the loose and watery rose. These can then be incorporated and converted to beautiful card stock for gift giving or labeling - or anything you like.

5/5

I wish I could give this book a 10/5!

This is a must-have book for anyone interested in watercolor or current painters. Personally, this book re-ignited my passion for watercolor painting.
The book goes from color techniques to how to approach different objects like fruits, animals, leaves, etc. It also combines this techniques with great ideas of do-it-yourself cards which really spark the reader's creative side.

I completely love this book and will recommended to friends and family!!

Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Quarry for the opportunity to review this book.

I had really wished for this book in particular because I love to create. Watercolors are my favorite medium to work in so not being able to download it because it was an incompatible file to my ancient kindle. Thank you for the opportunity to try though! Hopefully I can find it in a hard copy somewhere.

This is an Impressive beginner book to water coloring. For those who have no knowledge on the subject at all, to those who just need tips on painting objects, this book covers it all. From what tools you need and what brands to get them from, to basic techniques on how to get started, this really covers the basics.

I myself have a basic understanding of water coloring already. But despite already having knowledge of things like "wet on wet" or "dry on dry", I still found this book had a plethora of information for me to use. I love that there is a part on mixing colors together. This is something I am still figuring out and found it helpful to use as reference. There are many other simple, yet very helpful tools I've learned in here.

On to the part I was most looking forward to, the "how-to-paint" section. There are a variety of step by step instructions to follow in sections like: flowers, butterflies, fruits and veggies and even lettering! This is an easy, less stressful way to figure out how to paint objects. I find this has helped me the most. The author even shows how you can take the knowledge of objects you have learned to paint, and tweek it to paint something else. At the end of the book there are even ideas on ways to make useful crafts, and photo copying your artwork so you can print off more. Over all this section of the book was by far my favorite.

If you have zero knowledge of water coloring I think you will be the type to get the most out of this book. If you come in already having an understanding of what tools you need, and how to mix and water down paint, then you wont need the first half of this book. The last section will be the part that is most useful to those who have at least google searched how water painting works. Many of the topics this book features you could easily pinterest, or google how-to's of. But the artwork on every chapter page and inspiration this book provides is the selling point for me. This book makes me happy to look at, and inspires me to paint something new when I am stuck. If you are looking for a physical book to pick up and keep around as reference, or to give as a gift, then I think this one is perfect!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me an arc of this book. As always, all thoughts are my own.

Creative Watercolor is a book I wish I had when starting in watercolor two years ago. I’ve been dabbling in watercolor since seeing a group of middle aged women painting in the butterfly house while on vacation at the San Diego Zoo. I saw them and thought, “now that’s what I want to do when I retire!” But also thought to myself, “why wait to retire?!” I started painting a couple months later but didn’t enjoy the watercolor books I was finding, and the rec department short class I took had one session then got cancelled! Anyways, this book is the one! The one I should’ve had from the beginning! It walks the beginner through supplies and even recommends specific brands which is very helpful to someone new to watercolor. The first chapters cover how to actually work with watercolor, then the subsequent chapters focus on what you are painting (I.e. flowers). Each segment has a small project that is not out of reach for the beginner. The photographs and illustrations in the book are gorgeous and really help to show the reader exactly what steps to take. Love this book and am adding this one to my list to actually purchase as it really is a great resource for a beginner to watercolor.

t played with watercolors since I was a kid but there is something so inviting about a picture made with them. The muted colors suggest calm and tranquility to me, which I could use more of in my life. I even find the bright colors soothing.

Creative Watercolor is billed as a step-by-step guide for beginners so the uninitiated will not feel intimidated. Glancing through the pages will reveal tons of eye candy. There are so many different kinds of pictures made with watercolors that it will inspire something in everyone.

Calderon goes through the basics, including supplies and color theory. She does not limit herself to only watercolors but instead discusses ways to incorporate inks/markers, ribbon/twine, washi tape, stickers, and glitter/embellishments. The step-by-step photos with accompanying text clearly explain the techniques of gradient, spatter and layering. There are exercises for each technique so that the reader can feel comfortable using them before getting to the projects.

Using the techniques, Calderon goes through leaf studies, flowers, butterflies/bugs, fruits/veggies, and lettering. She also discusses scanning and Photoshop, using a wedding invitation as an example.

The explanations for all aspects of using watercolors are thorough and the step-by-step photos are extremely helpful. Calderon’s enthusiasm for this artistic medium comes through on every page and it’s contagious. Creative Watercolors is a very comprehensive book that will educate and inspire anyone wishing to learn and master watercolors.

Thank you to Quarto Publishing and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.

This is a beautiful book. I have been looking for a few books to get back into a watercolor practice. It is both creative and relaxing. What this book does really well is short but targeted practice lessons. The end results are worthy of display. It is extremely varied -- I like the lettering section as well as the food and flowers, but then she also includes bugs of all things. Very creative.

I loved this book and will buy it for myself! I tried several of the exercises in the book and they were easy to follow and I got good results. I am a beginner in watercolouring and the content was very helpful for a beginner. I am sure the more detailed lesson would appeal to people already adept at watercolouring. Excellent book!

This is a really wonderful book for beginning watercolor painting, exactly the sort that I love. It is filled with step-by-step instructions to paint flowers, fruits and veggies, bugs, leaves, letters and more. Along the way, the author gives very good instructions on how to do all kinds of watercolor techniques and has projects to teach you how to get comfortable with it all. The illustrations are gorgeous and inspired me to want to get painting right away.

My star system is 1 for really didn't like it, 2 for it was just okay, 3 for good, 4 for very good, and 5 for so good I plan to buy my own copy even if there are small drawbacks to it. I came very close to giving this a 5 as I would like to get my own copy, but the suggested retail price ($22.99) is a little high for me on our budget. Amazon has it discounted somewhat right now, but I'm trying to shop less there so I ultimately decided to pass on getting the book even though I did really enjoy it.

All in all, this is a cheerful, gorgeous book full of great tutorials and one of my favorite art instruction books that I've read.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.

I loved this guide for beginners. It has six chapters, two focussing on essential supples and basic techniques. They are straightforward and clear. Chapters three, four and five focus on flowers, mini-beasts and fruit and vegetables. There are plenty of examples and it guides you carefully through the process. The final chapter relates to lettering. this is followed by examples of projects you can use these skills for. A fun and colourful book that makes you want to give it a try! Thank you to Net Galley and the Quarry Books, Quarto Group for this ARC.

I love this book! The cheery cover makes you want to pick it up and the fun projects make you want to dive in and get started! It's not the usual hum drum color wheels and brush techniques, there's just something welcoming and encouraging that made me feel I could really accomplish these projects. I have scads of watercolor paper and paints at home and now I have a book to make me want to use them. Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this title and thanks to Ana Calderon for taking the 'scare' factor out of getting started with art! #CreativeWatercolor #NetGalley

I have wanted to try watercolor for a while now, and this book makes it seem more accessible than ever. I enjoyed the step by step instructions on how to achieve specific styles and results.

Projects start from simple test swatches to get to know the materials and progress all the way to digital processing. I would definitely recommend this book to a watercolor beginner, especially someone who likes to see all of the steps laid out in front of them.

I read through this title while I was on vacation and brought a set of watercolors with me. Since I am a complete beginner with watercolor, I thought this book did an excellent job at introducing the paints and beginner techniques. I did all of the practice lessons and had fun learning how the watercolors work and how they can be layered to produce stronger shades and mixed colors. I was able to successfully create a set of postcards for friends. Would absolutely recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about watercolor in a fun and easy way!

I remember playing with watercolors as a child, I wasn’t good at it (or any other type of painting). So eventually I only played with them for art class, and to do the exercises and projects needed to get a good enough grade to pass my class.

But as an adult I have recently gone back to art and painting. This time with the wisdom that it doesn’t matter if I’m not that good. What matters is if I enjoy it or not.

But I’m only human, and of course I want to be good at what I do. For this I’ve been obsessed with painting books, and I have been reading one after the other.

Believe it or not, one you read one, you HAVEN”T read them all. Each new book has something unique. And this book is no different. I found some pretty awesome projects and tutorials.

I used the wrong kind of paper (sketch paper instead of proper watercolor paper), but I recreated one of the projectors included in this book. And I’m quite happy with the results.
I added more to it and made it my own, as I prefer to use the projects just as a starting point. But this is one of the beauties of this book! You can decide to follow the projects step by step, only a few steps and add your own flare, or not follow them at all, and just get inspired by the beautiful projects inside.

I need to say, that the cover doesn’t do justice to the content!!! When I first saw this book, I though that all projects would be simple and geometrical. Much like the doodles in the cover. But, nope nope nope. It has way more than that!

The book features flowers and leaves, bugs and critters, fruits, and even lettering! By the way, my favorite part about the lettering is that it also includes an alphabet sample.

This book is full of information, projects, techniques, examples. Just everything that you need to start practicing those watercolor skills with confidence. And even how to turn your art into a digital file and work in Photoshop.

Great techniques and step by step process for painting. I would recommend this to a beginning watercolorist.

Creative Watercolor takes a modern, illustrative approach to an old medium, and adds crafty projects to explore the beauty of watercolor. I read an electronic version from NetGalley, so I can't comment on the production values, but I did see a review on Amazon indicating that the paper quality is good and that it opens nice and flat, a necessity with a book like this.

After a discussion of supplies and color mixing, Calderon provides some good watercolor warm-ups. This technique chapter also demonstrates how to scan and replicate your paintings using Photoshop. This allows you to turn simple paintings into graphic art.

The next three chapters delve into flowers and foliage, butterflies and critters, and fruits, veggies and nuts. As well as step by step painting instructions and photos, each chapter includes fun projects like place cards and recipe gift cards.

The final chapter is a good introduction to lettering, a perfect way to round out this book. All in all, this book will give the beginner a complete introduction to watercolor, lettering, and the type of illustration projects that combine these elements.

I'm not an artistic person and I have never painted with watercolor so as a complete novice, I was impressed with this book. It explained the methods and materials in a way that was easy to understand. The photographs were extremely helpful. I was able to follow along, step by step and complete the mini lessons. They gradually build on your skills. I only got as far as chapter 3 but it's clear it would be a good reference for our older students. I would recommend having this in a school library for those students who want to take what they learn in art class a step further.

This is a project-based book with step by step instructions and plenty of images that will guide you through the process. It explains really well the tools you will need and the different options you can choose from. For example, pros vs.cons of tube, pan and liquid watercolors along with recommended brands. The first section is for warm-ups and basic techniques to get you started. Once you are comfortable with with the basics, you can try the projects from the next sections.

Projects consist of simple stylized objects (modern watercolors approach, no realism here) which makes them easy to complete. They are grouped in "flowers and foliage", "butterflies and other critters", "fruits, veggies and nuts" and "lettering". It gives plenty of sample alphabets to choose from.

With all the lessons learned in this book, you should be able to create more elaborate watercolor projects and beautiful illustrations, greeting cards or any other crafty project. A fun way to get you started into this popular media.

- Good for beginners.
- For the weekend hobbyist and as art therapy.
- Projects suitable to enjoy with kids.
- If you want to add modern watercolors to your crafts or designs.
