All Dogs Have ADHD: An affirming introduction to ADHD is a delightful nonfiction book by award-winning author, Kathy Hoopmann. After writing her first photo book in 2006, All Cats have Asperger Syndrome, she added dogs to the list of animals that can teach children about complex medical terms using photographs of animals they can relate to. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is easy to associate with dogs - restless balls of energy that are easily distracted and look so apologetic when they get into trouble. The canine photographs are adorable, and even children too young to read will enjoy looking at the pictures.

In 2020, she updated the books to add gender neutral language to acknowledge the terminology changes that occurred over the years. I ordered the last published version (2020) in ebook format to compare with this newest edition. As far as I can tell, nothing has changed. It was an excellent book in 2017 and it's an excellent book in 2026. The photographs are beautiful, the captions are well written, and this book is perfect for readers of any age. Adults can read it to younger children, school-aged children can read it for themselves, and anyone will enjoy having this book in their collection.

Whether the reader knows someone with ADHD, or just loves dogs, it will make an excellent gift. I wish I'd had a copy when my children were young. Both my boys were diagnosed with ADHD in kindergarten. That said, I plan to gift all three of my adult children with copies of all three books because they are still relevant. They celebrate the positivity and individuality while exploring what it is to be unique. I highly recommend all three books.

This picture book has a lot of great pictures of beautiful dogs. It reads as your 'child' has ADHD and many of the life challenges they come across. A little advise on how to deal with these behaviours includes having patience and loving them - which must comfort those reading this as you wouldn't be reading it if you didn't love them.

I enjoyed this book and think it will be a great way to explain ADHD to children. The dogs are adorable, but sometimes the words were heard to read over the images. But that might be my screen.

This was a cute & quick read! The pictures are adorable with doggies of different breed & ages! this is definitely a book you want to read with the kiddies as the cute pictures will drag them in!

I'm seriously going to recommend this to everyone I know who has ADHD or has a loved ones with ADHD. I expected a cute picture book and this definitely has a lot of gorgeous dog pictures, but the text is surprising informative, uplifting, and practical, while remaining easy to understand.

I read this after reading "All Cats are on the Autism Spectrum" and "All Birds Have Anxiety". This book seems aimed at a slightly different audience as well, more towards parents of children with ADHD, aimed at showing them which behaviors are common in children with ADHD. The photos of the dogs were very cute, even if some were a bit too heavily edited for my taste.

I was excited to read this book as someone with ADHD myself. I wanted to see if I could use this book as a tool if my children receive a diagnosis as well. The book does cover the things you typically hear about ADHD, and then moves into affirmations, an examples of famous people with ADHD as well, with corresponding photographs of dogs. I wish it had more affirmations, because I felt like it was heavy on this are the traits and how we often feel shame around them.

Kathy Hoopmann's books All Cats Are on the Autism Spectrum, All Birds Have Anxiety, and All Dogs Have ADHD are such a gift. They take big, often misunderstood topics and make them feel approachable, kind, and full of heart.

What makes these books truly great is how they raise awareness for the general public without ever feeling heavy. They show, in the sweetest way, that people experience the world differently and that those differences deserve understanding, not judgment. I read through this with my teen daughter who is the youngest of five kids who all have strong adhd traits. We liked it and really enjoyed the cute dog photos and positive spin on everything, though she commented that, “it’s giving Google slides.” She said she’d give the book a 2 or 3 because it felt like the sort of thing she makes up for fun in a few minutes, but it was still a good book and I think she may be a tough audience.

We both were very happy that there were no AI photos (I see now that it was first published before the days of AI slop). The photos are stock photos with credit and thumbnails given at the end.

This is exactly the kind of book I would have given one of my sons for Christmas when he was a kid, because he loved easy to read books with silly cat and dog pictures and it has such positive messages about adhd (it is his superpower). A fun book with great messages for kids and parents alike.

This is a wonderful way to introduce parents and children, who are diagnosed, or on the pathway to diagnosis, to the experiences and challenges that they may encounter. It acts as a basic introduction to children of all ages to ADHD using funny and relatable photos of dogs, giving children a validation of their experience in a fun and positive way.

This Kathy Hoopmann book is getting republished. It’s an absolute classic and here it is with a new cover and still so much to offer. I got my ARC from John Murray Press on NetGalley but Goodreads is still only showing the prior publisher info. Anyway…let’s review!

I owned the previous version of this when it first came out. I bought it for my son who has diagnosed ADHD Combined Type to talk to him at a young age of the positives of ADHD in a way where seeing dogs behave in similar ways makes it not heavy and easy to understand.

ADHD is not nice to live with. I don’t have it but my adult son does. I am Autistic like him, he has both. I’ve watched him struggle since a very young child. It was super obvious something was not the same as other children from early childcare situations. First diagnosed at age 4 and wow was the assessment process intense and long, he then was re-diagnosed at 11, prior to high school when things like extra support was starting to be badly needed. I also was reading all I could at the time to help him. This one was one we could read together. It’s great for parents and teachers alike, a nice way to introduce siblings and classmates to what ADHD can be like with a positive outlook.

This book is a joy! Dogs do very literally have ADHD like qualities. Not ADD but ADHD (big differences). Things like getting distracted super easily, having boundless amounts of energy and no matter how many times you are told to sit still you can’t. Enthusiastic greetings and loud voices. I smiled so much reading this book again.

I then years later used all of Kathy’s books in my job as a Life Skills and Job Coach to young adults with varying disabilities and conditions including ADHD. It was a great way to have open discussion, a lot of laughs and talk through the hard bits and the amazing strengths also. The book is full of short bursts of text with amazing photography of lots of types of dogs being well….ADHD”ish”. It’s not a serious book despite the topic and a sense of humour will help you enjoy it more.

For those who think ADHD is just a made up thing then I know for a FACT you’ve never been close to a child or adult that has struggled with it. There is still ignorance out there. I saw my son’s brain patterns on actual scans operating differently in regions of the brain non ADHD people don’t have react the same way. It’s Neurological not behavioural.

I can’t recommend this enough no matter who it is for. It’s stood the test of time for good reason. The photos of the dogs in this book are just stunning. Dogs just make you smile and I love that their ways can be described so positively. My ADHD son brings me as much joy as all the dogs I’ve ever owned who have it too.

A great way to educate anybody - young or old a bit about ADHD by comparing it to wonderful dogs in a very special book.

Honestly this was so fun and a lot funnier than I expected. Honestly a complete joy and lovely to see a funny explanation of ADHD which can be pretty horrendous at times. Love the pictures of the dogs!!

Honestly, I think it’s pretty amazingly accurate to claim that All Dogs have ADHD, though whether this exists as a formal diagnosis is questionable. But I think there’s some merit to the fact that I see my husband as being very dog-like in some of his behaviors as it relates to his ADHD and, admittedly, find the comparison to be rather lovely. Not only that, but I do genuinely believe a book like this is going to do wonders for ample numbers of people who actually do have the formal diagnosis in making them feel more positively about their situation. While only a simple book with a short amount of text (probably helpful, given the subject) and photos of various dogs loving living life, the fact is that books like these are important.

And it’s most certainly going on my recommendation list for students, family’s, and yes, even adults who either would like to or need to look at their diagnosis in a new light.

What a fun way to explain ADHD to kiddos. As a mom of 3 (2 with ADHD), a kindergarten teacher, and someone that was diagnosed with ADHD in my early 20s I loved that this book explained ADHD in an understandable way. I appreciated that the author explained some of the things that meet be seen as "problems" for those with ADHD and spun it to show that some of those traits are what make people living with ADHD special.

My son’s best friend was diagnosed with adhd in preschool. This book describes him so well!! I hope all teachers and people working with the public read this book. It puts a different spin on some troublesome behaviors and explains it too! And in terms even kids can understand. I will definitely be getting this for my classroom library and the other teachers in my life.

As someone with ADHD and as the mother of an AuDHD child, the information provided in this book is invaluable. The descriptions of traits often seen with ADHD are great. I went through the book with my son and although he didn't understand it all, there were many ideas about ADHD that I said and we both agreed are things he experiences.

This was a great book, talking about the traits of ADHD and how it can affect us, told through pictures of cute dogs. I had loved the cats one for autism, and the birds one for anxiety, so I was really looking forward to this one and it didn’t disappoint at all! The photos were great and I learned a lot more about ADHD than I thought I knew- definitely worth checking out if you or a loved one has a diagnosis and wants to understand it in a very simple and accessible way.

I don’t have kids myself, but I would absolutely recommend this to anyone I know who does. I think this is such a great way to help kids feel understood and show them that being a little different isn’t a bad thing!

I expected this to be cute and relatable. I did not expect a book full of dog photographs to make me feel this understood.

All Dogs Have ADHD uses short, accessible text paired with expressive dog photography to explain ADHD in a way that is accurate, recognizable, affirming, and genuinely fun. The photographs aren’t simply there because dogs are adorable—they do real storytelling work, making experiences like forgetfulness, frustration, executive-function struggles, impulsivity, and interest-driven attention immediately understandable.

What impressed me most was the balance. The book doesn’t pretend ADHD is easy, and it doesn’t fall into the equally frustrating trap of reducing ADHD to a list of deficits. It acknowledges the things that can be genuinely difficult—including the fact that simply telling someone with ADHD to “try harder” doesn’t magically make their brain cooperate—while also recognizing creativity, intuition, unusual problem-solving, drive, and the ability to see things others may miss.

I especially loved where the book ultimately lands: on the importance of love, acceptance, encouragement, and having people who believe in you. It doesn’t present ADHD strengths as something that exists in a vacuum. Environment and support matter.

As an adult reader, I repeatedly recognized myself in these pages, but the format also makes this incredibly accessible for children. I could easily see it being read independently, shared between a child and caregiver, or used aloud in a classroom to start conversations about ADHD without shame.

This feels like a book that is talking with people who have ADHD rather than explaining people with ADHD to everyone else.

Funny, thoughtful, validating, and wonderfully accessible.

Ok this was NOT the type of book I expected—but it turns out, it was the type of book I NEEDED.

I have never seen ADHD explained in such a relatable, down to earth, easy to understand manner. I love dogs, so putting dogs to an ADHD cycle was just perfect, bravo to the authors. That’s it, easiest book review ever—Give to this every jerk who ever says you can “grow out” of ADHD or any other mental illness. Brava!

I really appreciated being able to read this series of books by Katthy Hoopmann through Net Galley, like the two other in the series, All Dogs have ADHD, is another smart humorous, unique, poignant and heart warming look at the experience of children with ADHD through the lens of dogs. While this picture book form is ideal for children I would have benefitted from this book as a child especially as I was not diagnosed until adulthood and these book would have enabled me to articulate my world and my struggles to others and shown me that I was not the only person feeling and living like this. So while very assessable to children, these books are for everyone of any age with or without a neurodivergent brain, but has a desire to understand it. They can just be read as fun books with quirky pictures and captions of animals. I will be purchasing the series.

After reading All Cats Are on the Autism Spectrum, I was pleasantly surprised to see this and All Birds Have Anxiety were available on NetGalley as well, so naturally, I pounced on them!

I read this one with my ADHD child, and he really enjoyed the photos of the dogs and spotting the similarities between the things mentioned in the book and himself. The photography is beautiful and definitely helped keep his attention throughout.

This is an informative, positive and affirming book. Although it's aimed at children, I think there's something here for everyone and it could be a great little pick-me-up on those days when you’re struggling with the things that make you different. There are some really lovely messages throughout, and I think the dogs make the information fun and relatable rather than feeling like you're being lectured.

I’m a dog owner, a special education teacher who works with students with ADHD, and I myself have ADHD so I was very excited to receive this ARC. In this book, a collection of funny, adorable dog and puppy photos accompanies a series of statements describing strengths, needs, and areas of growth for folks with ADHD. The end of the book reminds readers that with support, patience, and understanding from the people around them, those with ADHD can thrive. Overall, it’s a charming book and it could definitely help a person who has ADHD to understand themselves a bit better, and help others to be more supportive and empathetic, just like we are when we’re teaching puppies.

The pocketsize idea is wonderful.
While the digital book is nothing short of fun, the print versions have some more value due to the high quality photos.

Upon a new read, I think some photos choices and some texts could be improved.
This book can immensely children with ADHD understand, appreciate and voice themselves better.
There are several situations and aspects of being ADHD that are tough and this book deals with them perfectly: with strong, cute, relatable images and simple texts that empower ADHDers.

I downloaded all three books because I was intrigued by the concept and I’m impressed! First of all, the photos are adorable. It also simplifies a lot of concepts to make it easier for children (and adults) to understand complex mental wellness topics.

This is a lighthearted way to introduce kids to the ways that ADHD can be experienced--both the strengths and the challenges of that learning profile. Kids will enjoy looking at the cute and sometimes hilarious dog photos, and the text can help kids put into words what they sense is different about them. A great way to make kids with ADHD more knowledgeable about their learning profile and feel seen.

It’s the first time I encountered this series, and I really like the idea behind it! Children love books with animals.

It is sometimes easier to identify with the behavior of a non-human main character, because it doesn’t matter that they don’t exactly look like them, the focus is more on how they act.

The combination of ADHD traits and the pictures of the dogs are a really good match. Also, the pictures are really gorgeous. I love for a change that it is not drawn but all real photographs, and all the different types of dogs enhance the feeling of all being different but sharing some traits.

I love this one! Why not 5*? I think it’s a bit too short and simplistic. But that’s just a minor point, it’s more 4,5* rounded down for me!

An adorable book with a lot of great information to teach others in a fun way. The sentences are not too long for small children to practice and understand, but also interesting enough for adults to learn also.

Much like the All Cats are on the Autism Spectrum book, I requested this book because my daughter is AuDHD and I have ADHD and I thought it would be fun to read together. We loved all the pictures, it was really fun going through the pages and see ing how the pictures reflected the copy, they really made her laugh but she was also excited to see herself reflected in the words. This is a great book to help others understand ADHD and for those who have ADHD to see themselves in a positive way. It is great book for young people to learn about ADHD, themselves and others who have ADHD.

I really liked this, the dog pictures were really funny and the word were exactly who I am and what I am like. I haven't read a book like this that shows how I feel before. It was really good.
