Description

For Ages: 5-9

Description: Every child feels different in some way, but Thuy feels "double different." She is Vietnamese American and she has two moms. Thuy walks home one winter afternoon, angry and lonely after a bully's taunts. Then a bird catches her attention and sets Thuy on an imaginary exploration. What if she could fly away like a bird? What if she could sprint like a deer, or roar like a bear? Mimicking the footprints of each creature in the snow, she makes her way home to the arms of her moms. Together, the three of them imagine beautiful and powerful creatures who always have courage - just like Thuy.

Author Bio: Bao Phi was born in Vietnam and raised in the Phillips neighborhood of South Minneapolis. His debut picture book for Capstone was the award-winning A Different Pond. It received starred reviews from numerous publications including Booklist, Publishers Weekly, School Library Journal, and Kirkus. Bao is an author, a poet, a community organizer, and a father.

Illustrator Bio: Basia Tran is a Polish, Vietnamese, and a bit of an American illustrator working in books, music, animation, video games & advertising. Despite her diverse upbringing and work, it is all connected by a common thread: her desire to tell stories that could make you laugh, teach you something new or even bring you some peace. Best of all, if they could be all of the above. In her free time she’s rock wall climbing, enjoying tea and thinking about all there is to learn and think about in the universe, all at the same time.
